Notes: The bubble formation process at small, single, circular orifices at low gas flow rates is modified when the system is vertically vibrated in a sinusoidal fashion. For systems with significant gas chamber volume, bubble volume in the vibrated case is smaller than in the nonvibrated case. The vibrations increase the amount of liquid weeping through the orifice into the gas chamber. A simple inviscid model adequately predicts bubble formation in the medium-chamber-volume region at low values of amplitude and frequency of vibration and low viscosities. The boundaries of the transition from the FR ≫ 1 to the FR = 1 regions are described in terms of “the acceleration number/Eötvös number”.

Notes: The analysis of the stability of slopes using limiting equilibrium considerations necessitates the determination of the critical slip surface which yields the minimal factor of safety. The numerous methods currently available for slope stability analysis provide a procedure for assigning a factor of safety to a given slip surface, but do not consider the problem of identifying the critical conditions. This paper presents an effective minimization procedure based on dynamic programming by which the minimal factor of safety, and the corresponding surface, are determined simultaneously. This procedure SSDP (Slope Stability by Dynamic Programming), couples the minimization scheme with Spencer's method of slope stability analysis. It may be applied to slopes of any geometry, layering, pore pressure and external load distributions. No arbitrary restrictions are placed on the shape of the slip surfaces, and the analysis satisfies all equilibrium equations.Application of the procedure to slope stability problems reported in the literature shows that for a given slip surface the procedure yields factors of safety which are almost identical to those reported, but in every case a more critical slip surface, with a lower factor of safety, may be found.

Notes: For many soils experimental evidence suggests that deviation from normality between the plastic strain increments and the yield function is exhibited mainly in the volumetric behaviour, whereas the deviatoric behaviour exhibits normality. An analysis of the consequence of this observation is presented, and it leads to an expression for the plastic potential function as composed of two functions, a yield function and another dependent only on the hydrostatic pressure; the latter is considered to constitute the concept of correction functions presented recently by Desai and Siriwardane13.

Notes: This paper presents design and materials considerations involved in the production of large, free standing glass reinforced plastic (GRP) industrial stacks. Because of large wind loads, such stacks must be designed with sophisticated structural analysis techniques, especially at load transfer points. This paper details such considerations for the world's tallest GRP stack.

Notes: Numerous amines of biological interest can acetylated in aqueous solution, extracted and then perfluoroacylated for analysis by electron-capture gas chromatography. The structures of the products which are obtained can be confirmed by recording and interpreting their mass spectra. The electron impact mass spectral behaviour of various derivatized amines (amphetamine, ephedrine, p-hydroxyamphetamine, 3-methoxytyramine, norephedrine, normetanephrine, norpseudoephedrine, p-octopamine, 2-phenylethylamine, phenylethanolamine, pseudoephedrine, phentermine, m-tyramine and p-tyramine) is described.

Notes: Metabolism of 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluorohexane with liver microsomes from phenobarbital-treated rats gave only one metabolite, namely, the 5-hydroxy derivative. Under similar conditions 1,1-difluorocyclohexane was metabolized to give mainly the 3- and 4-hydroxy derivatives in the ratio 1:∼5.5 The structures of these metabolites were established by chemical ionization (CI) and/or electron impact (EI) mass spectrometry and confirmed by synthesis in the case of 1,1-difluorocyclohexan-4-ol. Oxidation of 1,1-difluorocyclohexane with lead tetrakis(trifluoroacetate) also gave, inter alia, the 3- and 4-hydroxy derivatives. In saturated hydrocarbons complete replacement of hydrogen by fluorine at one particular carbon will not only block microsomal hydroxylation thereat but will also inhibit hydroxylation at neighbouring hydrogen-bearing carbons, (α almost completely, β markedly, γ slightly).

Notes: The finite element reduced scalar potential method of calculating magnetic fields is investigated by comparing it with a classical series method. Both methods are applied to two problems having a current band surrounding a ferromagnetic shell. The magnetic field distributions obtained by both methods are shown to be in generally good agreement.

Notes: The 13C NMR spectra of 18 guaianolides have been measured and the chemical shifts assigned. The compounds investigated include the naturally occurring eremanthin (1), dehydrocostus lactone, eregoyazin, eregoyazidin and other semisynthetic lactones derived from 1. Qualitative analysis of the data suggests that the predominant conformation in almost all compounds so far studied is a distorted chair-like form.
