Notes: The solubility parameter of poly(oxetane), poly(3,3-dimethyloxetane) and poly(3,3-diethyl oxetane) has been estimated by measuring solution viscosities. Values of δ = 9.4, 7.9, and 7.9 cal1/2·cm-3/2 for each polymer were obtained and compared with those calculated from empirical methods. The 3-dimensional solubility parameter approach has been also applied in order to get additional information on the effect of structural modifications on the main chain in the solubility behavior.

Notes: Experiments to produce polycarbosilazane resin and high-strength silicon carbide-silicon nitride (SixNyCz) fibers as well as resin/fiber characteristics are reported. Polycarbosilazane resin was drawn into fibers from the melt and subsequently treated and pyrolyzed into SixNyCz fibers. These materials are characterized by high tensile modulus (29 × 106 psi for 0.4-mil diameter) and high electrical resistivity (6.9 × 108 Ω·cm for 0.6-mil diameter).

Notes: The melting mechanism inside screw extruders is presently analyzed using numerical, iterative methods that are too complex to be used widely by practicing engineers. Our theoretical and experimental investigations of the melting mechanism have produced simple, analytical equations for predicting the melting rate of fully compacted solid polymers without iterative calculations. The accuracy of these equations was found to be satisfactory. Consideration of the temperature and shear dependencies of the melt viscosity was found to be essential for the accurate prediction of the melting rate.

Notes: The development of a design of a continuous sterilization is considered with regard to practical data for temperature/time thermal deactivation of infecting organisms. An example of the optimization of the engineering design for capital and operating costs is given. Systems for continuous sterilization by membrane filtration are also considered.

Notes: We have determined the interaction second virial coefficients (B12) for the CO2 — C2H6 system between 250 and 300K using a Burnett-isochoric apparatus. The technique follows a procedure suggested by Hall and Eubank (1973) and extended by Holste et al. (1980). Combined errors for B12 are within 1.2 cm3/mol. In addition, values for the binary interaction parameter k12 calculated from our B12 values show difinite temperature dependence.

Notes: The relative effectiveness of several aldehydes in crosslinking cellulose of cotton fabric was determined using a pad-dry-cure treatment and a treatment by immersion in a solution at room temperature. Aldehydes ranked in the same order of ability to crosslink in both treatments. Factors related to crosslinking ability are discussed. The aldehydes crosslinking to the greater extent hydrated readily in water because the aldehyde group was activated or because cyclic hydrates could be formed.

Description / Table of Contents: Metalation of Benzyl Phosphines. IIWhereas o-bromobenzyldiorganophosphines react with n-BuLi in ether to give o-metalated products only, o-chlorobenzyldiorganophosphines leads to α-metalation and/or nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus, depending on the size of the substituents at phosphorus and the acidity of the CH2-protons. Under standard conditions o-ClC6H4CH2P(t-Bu)2 does not react with n-BuLi. A preliminary structure of [ (t-Bu)2]2 determined by X-ray diffraction reveals the large steric requirements of the t-butyl groups.
