Notes: Using the solvatochromic indicator method, a scale of solvent hydrogen-bond basicity, β1 (General), has been set up using a series of double regression equations, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \nu = \nu _0 + s\pi _1^* + b\beta _1 $$\end{document} for 11 aniline-type indicators. A similar solvent scale, β1 (Special), has been constructed by the homomorphic comparison method using only results by Laurence et al. on the indicators 4-nitroaniline and 4-nitro-N,N-dimethylaniline. Results are available from our previous work on a general solute scale, β2H, and we have also obtained a special solute scale, β2 (pKHB) from available log K values for hydrogen-bond complexation of bases with 4-fluorophenol in CCl4. However, the two solute β2 scales are virtually identical. It is shown that there is a general connection between β1(General) and β2H, with r = 0·9775 and s.d. = 0·05 for 32 compounds, and between β1(Special) and β2H, with r = 0·9776 and s.d. = 0·06 for the same 32 compounds. The latter correlation over 60 compounds yields r = 0·9684 and s.d. = 0·07. However, there are so many compounds in these regressions for which the differences in the solvent and solute β values are larger than the total expected error of 0·07 units that the use of β1 to predict β2 or vice versa is a very hazardous procedure. About 70 new β1 values obtained by the double regression method are also reported.

Notes: The KAHR model of structural relaxation has been extended to include the effects of pressure upon the retardation times of glass-forming materials. The previously used methodology is applied with a continuous distribution of retardation times of the fractional exponential form. Several forms of the pressure dependence are examined. The combined temperature and pressure changes on structural recovery of glasses are addressed in this paper.

Notes: This study was conducted to investigate some fundamental fatigue testing variables as they apply to the response characteristics of acrylic bone cement. Cyclic loading under load control was conducted at frequencies of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 Hz in air at room temperature. At a tensile stress range of 0.3-20.0 MPa the fatigue life increased linearly with logarithmic frequency. The effect of conditioning and testing in saline at both room temperature and 37°C at similar stress levels and a frequency of 10 Hz were also examined. When compared to dry testing at room temperature, testing in saline at 37°C resulted in a reduction in fatigue life while testing in saline at room temperature produced an increase in fatigue life. Of a number of statistical distributions considered, the Weibull was found to be the most appropriate in documenting the findings of this investigation. A companion fractographic investigation of the failure surfaces demonstrated distinct regions of crack growth and fast fracture.

Notes: These tables of evaluated rate constants for use in stratospheric modeling have been taken from the most recent report of the NASA Panel that has been periodically producing such reviews. They are reproduced here to make a broader community aware of their existence. This article should NOT be cited, nor should these rate constants be used without consulting the full report. All citations should be to that original report (JPL Publ. 85-37), which contains extensive documentation and discussion of the rationale of the evaluation. Notes: Previous published comparisons between fluidized-bed reactor models and experimental data have almost exclusively been in laboratory and pilot-plant scale equipment. This paper compares data obtained in an industrial phthalic anhydride reactor of 2. 13 m dia. using naphthalene as the feedstock with three models, the Kato and Wen bubble-assemblage model, the Kunii and Levenspiel three-phase bubbling-bed model, and Grace's two-phase bubbling-bed model. For the conditions of operation (U = 0.43 m/s, d̄p = 53 μm, H = 7.9 m, T = 636 K), all three models give similar predictions and each gives a good overall prediction of the conversion and selectivity if the reaction kinetics are based on the early study of DeMaria et al. (1961). Hydrodynamic parameters needed for the models are calculated from equations available in the literature. Grid and freeboard effects appear to play relatively minor roles in determining the overall conversion and yields for the reactor in question.

Notes: The perturbed-hard-chain model of Beret, Donohue, and Prausnitz, in the simplified version of Kim et al., is compared with recent VLE data on mixtures of ethane and n-alkanes with carbon numbers from 16 to 24. By using and extrapolating the linear relations between the three adjustable model parameters and the carbon number, as given by Kim et al., we find that the experimental isothermal bubble curves are well represented up to the critical pressure without the use of any adjustable parameters. Experimental Henry constants for ethane in eicosane are well predicted at all temperatures. We find this global model more accurate than the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation, even if the latter is fitted isotherm-by-isotherm to individual mixtures with temperature-dependent mixing parameters.

Notes: Four monoclonal antibodies were raised against polypetides present in a highsalt detergent-insoluble fraction from cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Indirect immunofluorescence microscopy of fibroblasts and epithelial cells grown in culture using these plant antibodies revealed staining arrays identical to those obtained with well characterised antibodies to animal intermediate filaments. Immunoflurescence microscopy of Chlamydomonas with these monoclonal antibodies and a monoclonal antibody that recognises all animal intermediate filaments (anti-IFA) gave a diffuse, patchy cytoplasmic staining pattern. Both the plant antibodies and anti-IFA stained interphase onion root tip cells in a diffuse perinuclear pattern. In metaphase through to telophase, the labelling patterns colocalised with those of microtubules. Labelling of the phragmoplast was also detected but not staining of the preprophase band. On Western blots of various animal cell lines and tissues, all the antibodies labelled known intermediate filament proteins. On Western blots of whole Chlamydomonas proteins, all the antiboides labelled a broad band in the 57,000 Mr range, and three antibodies labelled bands around 66,000 and 140,000 Mr but with varibale intensites. On Western blots of whole onion root tip proteins, all the antibodies labelled 50,0000 Mr (two to three bands) polypetides and a diffuse and around 60,000 Mr and three of the antibodies also labelled several polypeptides in the 90,000-200,000 Mr range. The consistent labelling of these different bands by several different monoclonal antibodies recognising animal intermediate filaments makes these polypetides putative plant intermediate filament proteins.

Notes: The high temperature oxidation behaviour of a 20% Cr/25% Ni/Nb stainless steel, during isothermal exposures of up to 525 h duration, in carbon dioxide, at 900 and 950°C and on subsequent furnace cooling, has been studied by weight change measurements, in combination with thin layer activation. For this purpose a defined region of the steel was activated by a deuteron beam to produce the radioisotopes 51Cr, 52Mn, 54Mn, 56Co, 57Co and 58Co, with independent depth distributions to 70 μm. Measurements of the activity levels of the radioisotopes before, during and after oxidation, monitored scale spallation, thus enabling effects on the oxidation kinetics due to scale cracking to be distinguished. The involvement of each radioisotope was ascertained in the types of scales formed and in the spall produced.
