Notes: The stress relaxation behavior of model silicone room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) elastomers has been used to examine the chemistry of the cured silicone network. It has been shown that the tin crosslinking catalyst, together with water, produces siloxane bond rearrangement which results in chemical stress relaxation. The measurement of the rate of stress relaxation of unfilled model elastomers at various temperatures gave an apparent activation energy of 10.3 kcal/mole-1 for the relaxation process. In addition, the effects of some of the constituents of the RTV on relaxation behavior have been examined.

Notes: All process designs are subject to uncertainties which make it impossible to state with complete certainty that a design will work. This study presents a measure of design confidence which considers the nature of the uncertainty and the operability of the process as a whole. This measure, called design reliability, quantifies the likelihood that a design will work. Detailed analyses are presented for three special cases: designs subject to random uncertainties, designs subject to fuzzy uncertainties, and designs subject to both random and fuzzy uncertainties. Practical procedures for estimating design reliability in these special cases are also presented.

Notes: Morphological studies are reported for a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester. Small angle light scattering studies were carried out as a function of temperature using Hv and Vv polarization with photographic as well as photometric techniques. No scattering was observed from a thin film cast from a dilute solution of the polymer in a highly volatile solvent. When the film was heated, scattering of light was observed above the glass transition temperature of the polyester. The scattering was found to be azimuthally dependent with Vv intensities being much higher than the corresponding Hv intensities. The size of the morphological features responsible for SALS patterns were calculated and were found not to change significantly with temperature ranging from glass transition temperature to the solid-nematic transition temperature of the polyester. The WAXS pattern of solution cast polymer was representative of an amorphous structure. Solution cast films heat treated under various conditions (all above the Tg of the polymer) contained crystalline as well as amorphous structures. The maximum apparent crystallinity for annealed samples was of the order of 30%.

Notes: A dynamic small-angle x-ray scattering system (DSAXS) for the study of materials deformation and relaxation has been developed in the National Center for Small-Angle Scattering Research, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (NCSASR-ORNL), in collaboration with Polymer Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts. The principles of DSAXS are outlined, including experimental procedures such as π-sector and Fourier expansion techniques. A few important functions required for studies of crystalline polymers, namely, static and dynamic lamellar orientation, dynamic lamellar separation, dynamic invariant function, etc., are defined. The hardware and software of the DSAXS system are described. Some preliminary results obtained for a spherulitic high-density polyethylene by π-sector technique and for a row-nucleated polybutene-1 by Fourier expansion techniques are demonstrated to evaluate the performance of the system.

Notes: Primary nucleation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) γ-phase crystals from the melt is affected by the presence of an electric field. Crystallization under the electric field is studied by polarized optical microscopy, thermal analysis, and wide-angle x-ray diffraction. Preliminary results indicate that the γ-phase crystal nucleation rate and content are enhanced by the electric field.A modification of the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation of a crystalline phase is proposed to account for the experimental observations. Electrostatic interaction between the nucleus total polarization and the electric field contributes to the free energy of nucleation to a very large extent at low undercooling. Theoretical predictions indicate that a static electric field will increase the nucleation rate of a polar phase and will decrease the nucleation rate of a nonpolar phase. Confirmation of the former fact is observed experimentally.

Notes: A Hopf bifurcation where a stable fixed pointer bifurcates into a stable periodic orbit as a parameter passes through a critical value, occurs frequently in nonlinear problems. Here, the Maynard Smith nonlinear map in population dynamics involving a parameter k is analysed with the help of numerical experiments in order to determine the periodic structure of the map beyond the primary Hopf bifurcation of period 6 which occurs at k = 1. The interesting result obtained is that in the parameter range from k = 1 to the value for blow-up of all initial conditions, there are successive windows of periods 7, 8 and 9, the last containing a secondary Hopf bifurcation of period 4.
