    Description: An output-feedback control strategy for pollution mitigation in combined sewer networks is presented. The proposed strategy provides means to apply model-based predictive control to large-scale sewer networks, in-spite of the lack of measurements at most of the network sewers. In previous works, the authors presented a hybrid linear control-oriented model for sewer networks together with the formulation of Optimal Control Problems (OCP) and State Estimation Problems (SEP). By iteratively solving these problems, preliminary Receding Horizon Control with Moving Horizon Estimation (RHC/MHE) results, based on flow measurements, were also obtained. In this work, the RHC/MHE algorithm has been extended to take into account both flow and water level measurements and the resulting control loop has been extensively simulated to assess the system performance according different measurement availability scenarios and rain events. All simulations have been carried out using a detailed physically-based model of a real case-study network as virtual reality. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Description: The high prevalence of dioecy in marine angiosperms or seagrasses (〉50% of all species) is thought to enforce cross-fertilization. However, seagrasses are clonal plants, and they may still be subject to sibling-mating or bi-parental inbreeding if the genetic neighborhood is smaller than the size of the genets. We tested this by determining the genetic neighborhoods of the dioecious seagrass Thalassia testudinum at two sites (Back-Reef and Mid-Lagoon) in Puerto Morelos Reef Lagoon, Mexico, by measuring dispersal of pollen and seeds in situ, and by fine-scale spatial autocorrelation analysis with eight polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers. Prevalence of inbreeding was verified by estimating pairwise kinship coefficients; and by analysing the genotypes of seedlings grown from seeds in mesocosms. Average dispersal of pollen was 0.3–1.6 m (max. 4.8 m) and of seeds was 0.3–0.4 m (max. 1.8 m), resulting in a neighborhood area of 7.4 m 2 (range 3.4–11.4 m 2 ) at Back-Reef and 1.9 (range 1.87–1.92 m 2 ) at Mid-Lagoon. Neighborhood area (Na) derived from spatial autocorrelation was 0.1–20.5 m 2 at Back-Reef and 0.1–16.9 m 2 at Mid-Lagoon. Maximal extensions of the genets, in 19 × 30 m plots, were 19.2 m (median 7.5 m) and 10.8 m (median 4.8 m) at Back-Reef and Mid-Lagoon. There was no indication of deficit or excess of heterozygotes nor were coefficients of inbreeding ( F IS ) significant. The seedlings did not show statistically significant deficit of heterozygotes (except for 1 locus at Back-Reef). Contrary to our expectations, we did not find evidence of bi-parental inbreeding in this dioecious seagrass with large genets but small genetic neighborhoods. Proposed mechanisms to avoid bi-parental inbreeding are possible selection against homozygotes during fecundation or ovule development. Additionally, the genets grew highly dispersed (aggregation index Ac was 0.09 and 0.10 for Back-Reef and Mid-Lagoon, respectively); such highly dispersed guerrilla-like clonal growth form likely increases the probability of crossing between different potentially unrelated genets. We expected bi-parental inbreeding in Thalassia testudinum , a dioecious seagrass with large genets but very limited pollen and seed dispersal; thus, small genetic neighbourhoods. However, kinship and seedling analysis did not find any evidence for this, which may be attributed to a highly dispersed guerrilla-like clonal growth form (which is unusual for a clonal climax species) that increases the probability of crossing between different potentially unrelated genets.

    Description: ABSTRACT Quinolines are aromatic nitrogen compounds with wide therapeutic potential to treat parasitic and microbial diseases. In this study, the genotoxicity of quinoline, 4-methylquinoline, 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO), and diversely functionalized quinoline derivatives and the influence of the substituents (functional groups and/or atoms) on their genotoxicity were tested using the SOS chromotest. Quinoline derivatives that induce genotoxicity by the formation of an enamine epoxide structure did not induce the SOS response in Escherichia coli PQ37 cells, with the exception of 4-methylquinoline that was weakly genotoxic. The chemical nature of the substitution (C-5 to C-8: hydroxyl, nitro, methyl, isopropyl, chlorine, fluorine, and iodine atoms; C-2: phenyl and 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl rings) of quinoline skeleton did not significantly modify compound genotoxicities; however, C-2 substitution with α-, β-, or γ-pyridinyl groups removed 4-methylquinoline genotoxicity. On the other hand, 4-NQO derivatives whose genotoxic mechanism involves reduction of the C-4 nitro group were strong inducers of the SOS response. Methyl and nitrophenyl substituents at C-2 of 4-NQO core affected the genotoxic potency of this molecule. The relevance of these results is discussed in relation to the potential use of the substituted quinolines. The work showed the sensitivity of SOS chromotest for studying structure–genotoxicity relationships and bioassay-guided quinoline synthesis. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environ Toxicol, 2013.

    Description: Testosterone exerts important effects in the heart. Cardiomyocytes are target cells for androgens, and testosterone induces rapid effects via Ca 2+ release and protein kinase activation and long-term effects via cardiomyocyte differentiation and hypertrophy. Furthermore, it stimulates metabolic effects such as increasing glucose uptake in different tissues. Cardiomyocytes preferentially consume fatty acids for ATP production, but under particular circumstances, glucose uptake is increased to optimize energy production. We studied the effects of testosterone on glucose uptake in cardiomyocytes. We found that testosterone increased uptake of the fluorescent glucose analog 2-(N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1, 3-diazol-4-yl)amino)-2-deoxyglucose and [ 3 H]2-deoxyglucose, which was blocked by the glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) inhibitor indinavir. Testosterone stimulation in the presence of cyproterone or albumin-bound testosterone induced glucose uptake, which suggests an effect that is independent of the intracellular androgen receptor. To determine the degree of GLUT4 cell surface exposure, cardiomyocytes were transfected with the plasmid GLUT4 myc -eGFP. Subsequently, testosterone increased GLUT4 myc- GFP exposure at the plasma membrane. Inhibition of Akt by the Akt-inhibitor-VIII had no effect. However, inhibition of Ca 2+ /calmodulin protein kinase (CaMKII) (KN-93 and autocamtide-2 related inhibitory peptide II) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) (compound C and siRNA for AMPK) prevented glucose uptake induced by testosterone. Moreover, GLUT4 myc- eGFP exposure at the cell surface caused by testosterone was also abolished after CaMKII and AMPK inhibition. These results suggest that testosterone increases GLUT4-dependent glucose uptake, which is mediated by CaMKII and AMPK in cultured cardiomyocytes. Glucose uptake could represent a mechanism by which testosterone increases energy production and protein synthesis in cardiomyocytes. J. Cell. Physiol. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

    Description: A MnCu-mixed oxide catalyst supported on a cordierite monolith was synthesized. The catalyst showed very good stability and high homogeneity and presented an excellent catalytic activity in the combustion of ethyl acetate, n- hexane, and its mixture. The total conversion temperature of the mixture was determined by the temperature at which the most difficult molecule was oxidized. An excellent catalytic activity in the combustion of ethyl acetate, n- hexane and its mixture was obtained with a MnCu/cordierite monolith catalyst. The monolithic catalyst was synthesized using a simple and reproducible method. Catalysts with homogeneous and well-adhered coatings were obtained. The simplicity of the method used favors scaling for industrial applications.

    Description: Nitrogen (N) supply often limits the productivity of temperate forests and is regulated by a complex mix of biological and climatic drivers. In excess, N is linked to a variety of soil, water, and air pollution issues. Here, we use results from an elevation gradient study and historical data from the long-term Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (New Hampshire, USA) to examine relationships between changes in climate, especially during winter, and N supply to northern hardwood forest ecosystems. Low elevation plots with less snow, more soil freezing, and more freeze/thaw cycles supported lower rates of N mineralization than high elevation plots, despite having higher soil temperatures and no consistent differences in soil moisture during the growing season. These results are consistent with historical analyses showing decreases in rates of soil N mineralization and inorganic N concentrations since 1973 that are correlated with long-term increases in mean annual temperature, decreases in annual snow accumulation, and a increases in the number of winter thawing degree days. This evidence suggests that changing climate may be driving decreases in the availability of a key nutrient in northern hardwood forests, which could decrease ecosystem production but have positive effects on environmental consequences of excess N.

    Description: Abstract Coastal foredunes provide the first line of defense against rising sea levels and storm surge and for this reason there is increasing interest in understanding and modeling foredune formation and post‐storm recovery. However, there is limited observational data available to provide empirical guidance for the development of model parameterizations. To provide guidance for improved representation of dune grass growth in models, we conducted a two‐year multi‐species transplant experiment on Hog Island, VA, U.S.A. and measured the dependence of plant growth on elevation and distance from the shoreline, as well as the relationship between plant growth and sand accumulation. We tracked total leaf growth (length) and aboveground leaf length and found that Ammophila breviligulata (American beachgrass) and Uniola paniculata (sea oats) grew more than Spartina patens (saltmeadow cordgrass) by a factor of 15% (though not statistically significant) and 45%, respectively. Our results also suggest a range of basal/frontal area ratios (an important model parameter) from 0.5‐1 and a strong correlation between transplant growth and total sand deposition for all species at the scale of two years, but not over shorter temporal scales. Distance from the shoreline and elevation had no effect on transplant growth rate but did have an effect on survival. Based on transplant survival, the seaward limit of vegetation at the end of the experiment was approximately 30 m from the MHWL and at an elevation of 1.43 m, corresponding to inundation less than 7.5% of the time according to total water level calculations. Results from this experiment provide evidence for the dune‐building capacity of all three species, suggesting S. patens is not a maintainer species, as previously thought, but rather a moderate dune builder even though its growth is less stimulated by sand deposition than A. breviligulata and U. paniculata.
