Notes: Abstract The spark method uses the fact that gas molecules which have been excited by the passage of a spark form a high conductance path for another high voltage pulse following the previous discharge after 10 to 100μs. A square pulse high voltage spark of duration adjustable down to 01μs is available. To ensure that the first spark of a train is as nearly straight as possible, it is triggered by an alpha particle from a safe radioactive source, the alpha-particle track being finely collimated. Stereoscopic photography of the sparks is used for observation, the pair of photographs being taken on a single 125×100 mm2 film. A Saab microdensitometer scanner is used for automatic recording of the co-ordinates of selected points on the stereo photograph and a data reduction computer program is used to obtain the three-dimensional positions of the spark paths and hence determine the flow velocities working from a known boundary condition.

Notes: Abstract The partial molal heats of solution at infinite dilution, ΔH s o , of bolaform salts [Et3N(CH2)nNEt3]Br2 and [allyl3N(CH2)nNallyl3]Br2, have been measured in H2O and D2O at 25°C using a solution calorimeter. The values of ΔH s o were endothermic for almost all of the compounds studied. Values of ΔH s o were obtained as a function of temperature for several homologs in H2O and D2O. Positive ΔC p o values obtained from least-squares analyses of the ΔH s o vs T data show an almost linear dependence on the number of methylene groups between the nitrogen centers. Whereas the enthalpy of transfer from H2O to D2O is small and endothermic, relatively large positive heat capacity of transfer data, increasing with increased hydrocarbon content of the salts, were observed. The ability of the bolaform cation to act as a model for cation-cation pairing in R4NX systems is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The partial molal heats of solution ΔH s o and the partial molal heat capacities of solution ΔC p o of the bolaform salts [Et3N(CH2)nNEt3]Br2 and [allyl3N(CH2)nNallyl3]Br2 have been obtained at infinite dilution in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). A comparison of these data with the results of previous thermodynamic studies of the same solutes in aqueous solvents has been carried out. The observed differences have been interpreted in terms of solute-induced solvent structural effects occurring in aqueous solvent media. Partial molal heat capacities of the bolaform salts at infinite dilution in DMSO, H2O, and D2O have been calculated from ΔC p o data and previously reported values of the heat capacities of the crystalline state. The data clearly show that the structure-promoting capabilities of these salts in aqueous solvents increase with increasing hydrocarbon content. A comparison of contributions to partial molal heat capacities of methylene groups in the bolaform and R4N+ series of salts reveals that similarities exist between the solvation effects of CH2 groups in the normal alkyl chain of the R4N+ cations and in the bridging alkyl chain of the bolaform cation.

Notes: Abstract The apparent,φ v, and partial, $$\bar V$$ 2, molal volumes of a series of homologousbis-tetraalkylammonium bromides have been determined in H2O and D2O at 25°C from precision density measurements carried out with a buoyancy densimeter and a dilatometer. The Debye-Hückel theoretical limiting slope forφ v and $$\bar V$$ 2 as a function of the square root of molar concentration is approached for all of the salts studied. the concentration dependence ofφ v and $$\bar V$$ 2 is anomalously large and negative in both solvents, with the deviations being less negative in D2O than in H2O. The bolaform salts have larger $$\bar V$$ 2 o values in H2O than in D2O, contrary to the observed behavior of R4NX salts. Possible origins of the solvent isotope effects observed are discussed in terms of structural and cavity contributions to the measured volumes. A comparison of thermodynamic transfer functions (H2O→D2O) for Et4N Br and the corresponding bolaform analog appropriate in the consideration of cation-cation pairing of Et4N+ ions shows inconclusive evidence for the support of the cation pair theory.

Notes: Abstract A system is described for the automatic sorting of zooplankton by isopycnic sedimentation at one gravity in density gradients of the silica sol Ludox AM containing 1% w/v sodium trimetaphosphate or 1% w/v dextran sulfate. The apparatus, called a “Rho Spectrometer”, consists of a 15.6–1 cylinder, a moveable piston for displacing the gradient from the top, and an ejector tube for collecting successive layers of the gradient. A gradient generator suitable for up to 30 Rho Spectrometers is also described. In a typical separation, 100 ml or so of preserved zooplankton are layered over a 13–1 gradient, which is 0 to 45% v/v in Ludox AM. Following an overnight period of sedimentation and equilibration, fish eggs are recovered from the top of the gradient, invertebrates from the central part of the gradient, and fish larvae from the bottom of the gradient. In many cases 90% of the fish larvae are separated from 95% of the invertebrates. Rho spectrometry should facilitate the analysis of large numbers of plankton samples through a substantial decrease in the amount of manual sorting required. However, in its present state of development, it is not suitable for all plankton samples; the zone of herring larvae, for example, is strongly overlapped by a number of invertebrates. In addition, samples heavily contaminated with Phaeocystis spp. or hydroids fail to sediment freely.

Notes: Abstract A realization problem for a class of linear hereditary systems is formulated and “state space” representations are constructed from inputoutput relations. The resulting hereditary models are shown to be Euclidean controllable, and comparisons are made between these hereditary realizations and other recently developed theories.
