Notes: Abstract Hybrid organic-inorganic composites were prepared by precipitating silica into hydroxypolybenzoxazole (HPBO) and sulfopolybenzobisthiazole (SPBT) polymers, with interfacial bonding between the phases improved by use of isocyanatopropyltriethoxy silane and N, N-diethylaminopropyltrimethoxy silane, respectively. The materials were transparent, and scanning electron micrographs indicated a uniform distribution of silica particles of domain sizes less than 1 μm. Values of the tensile modulus and tensile strength of the HPBO-silica composites were found to increase with the silica content. Values of the modulus of the SPBT-silica composites also increased in this manner, but the improvements in tensile strength were nearly independent of the amount of silica. The composites exhibited thermal decomposition temperatures of approximately 400–500°C, and the thermal stability was significantly increased for both HPBO and SPBT materials with increase in silica content. The water absorption amount for both types of composites decreased significantly compared to that of the pure polymers, suggesting excellent weatherability.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the investigation of the autoionizing states of AuI by exciting the states of 6d 2 D 3/2 and 6d D 5/2 with tunable dye lasers by means of a resonance ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (RI-TOFMS). Many new autoionizing states were found, a few of which have narrow-linewidths of about 0.1 cm−1. The photoionization efficiencies for different channels were compared. Among the autoionizing states found so far, the highest photoionization yield is given by two newly obtained states from the state 6d 2 D 5/2, 3683.6 cm−1 and 4636.5 cm−1 above the first ionization limit. In addition, the Shore-Fano profile parameters of several autoionizing resonances were determined by a nonlinear fitting program.

Notes: Abstract We have cloned cDNA sequences of both rat and mouse slow troponin T gene. These sequences share a high level of homology with each other and with the human slow troponin T gene although we were unable to detect an alternatively spliced exon present at 3′ end of human slow troponin T cDNA in either mouse or rat cDNAs. Northern blot analysis detected a high level expression of slow troponin T in adult mouse Soleus with a lower level expression in mixed postnatal skeletal muscles. Unlike late fetal and postnatal skeletal muscles in which slow troponin T expression is restricted to slow muscle fibre rich regions only, in situ hybridisation analysis detected this isoform to be highly expressed in somitic myotome and all muscle masses at 10–14 days of gestation after which its expression was rapidly downregulated. The unexpected expression of slow troponin T mRNA in fetal heart was apparent by both northern blotting and in situ hybridisation analyses. Slow troponin T mRNA in fetal heart was first detected at 10 day in utero reaching maximum levels of expression at 12–15 days gestation. The slow troponin T in the heart was mainly expressed in the ventral ventricles until day 15 after which low level expression was also observed in both atria. Slow troponin T mRNA in both atrium and ventricle was mainly expressed in outer wall of the myocardium although it was also expressed in interventricular septum. This study therefore shows that in addition to being a cell type specific marker during later fetal and postnatal skeletal muscle development, slow troponin T represented one of the major developmental isoforms expressed in embryonic and fetal skeletal muscle as well as in the cardiac muscle.

Notes: Abstract Under the assumption that the processes which control the direction of crack growth in 2024-T3 aluminum are directly related to void initiation and growth, a theoretical framework is developed to predict the direction of crack growth. The basic premise of the framework is that, depending on the mode mixity of the remotely applied loading, either σ m /σeff or σeff triggers the nucleation and growth of voids hence, fracture. The theoretical development uses linear elastic assumptions and two terms in the asymptotic expansion to describe the stress field in the vicinity of the crack tip for a mixed-mode I/II ARCAN specimen. Predictions based on the theory indicate that: (a) the transition from Mode~I type to Mode~II type crack propagation can be accurately quantified, and (b) the direction of crack growth is reasonably well predicted for both types of crack propagation. In addition, a qualitative, but microstructurally based, physical rationale for the observed phenomena is presented.

Notes: Abstract Stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements are presented for infinite pairs of surface cracks in plates subjected to remote tension by using the three dimensional weight function method developed in [7,8]. A wide range of configuration parameters is considered. The results compare very well with double edge cracks as crack aspect ratio tends to zero; with collinear cracks as it tends to infinity; with a pair of surface cracks in a wide plate when the ratio of crack length to plate width is small; and with a single surface crack in large plates when both the ratios of crack length to plate width and crack depth to plate thickness are small. Also illustrated is the significant difference between a single surface crack and the surface cracks in pairs when the ratio of crack depth to plate thickness is large.

Notes: Abstract To understand the behavior of corner cracks involving displacement-controlled loading, the mode-I stress intensity factors and crack face displacements are determined for a quarter-elliptical corner crack undergoing uniform end displacement. A 3-D weight function method is used for the analysis. Various crack aspect ratios and crack-length-to-plate-height ratios are considered. The results show that the stress intensity factor and the crack opening profile for the uniform displacement-controlled loading can be significantly different from those for the uniform-stress controlled loading.

Notes: Abstract Variable temperature (−60 to −100°C) studies of the infrared spectra (3500–400 cm−1) of cyclopropylmethyl ketone, c-C3H5C(CH3)O, dissolved in liquid xenon have been recorded. Utilizing several doublets due to the cis and near-trans conformers, the enthalpy difference has been determined to be 269 ± 26 cm−1 (3.22 ± 0.31 kJ/mol) with the cis conformer (oxygen atom cis to the three-membered ring) the more stable rotamer. From these data it is estimated that 79 ± 3% of the cis form is present at ambient temperature. Ab initio calculations have been carried out with different basis sets up to 6-311+G(2df,2pd) at the restricted Hartree–Fock and/or with full electron correlation by the perturbation method to second order (MP2) from which structural parameters and conformation stabilities have been determined. These calculations support the experimental conformational conclusions that the cis form is the more stable conformer. A complete vibrational assignment is given for the cis conformer, which is supported from a normal coordinate calculation utilizing ab initio force constants. Several of the fundamentals of the near-trans conformer have been identified and assigned. Adjusted r 0 structural parameters have been obtained from combined ab initio predicted values and previously reported rotational constants from the microwave investigation. The spectroscopic and theoretical results are compared to the corresponding quantities for some similar molecules.

Notes: Abstract Temperature dependent119Sn Mössbauer effect measurements on AuSn4, PdSn4, and PtSn4 compounds in the temperature range of 10 to 295 K shows the presence of a Sn4+ site. Variation of thermal shift and the Debye-Waller factor shows that the mean-squared displacement (lnf) and mean-squared velocity (δ) of the tin nuclei are both characterized by a Debye temperature of 238, 255, and 304 K in AuSn4, PdSn4, and PtSn4, respectively. No discernible evidence of a phonon mediated structural transition is observed in the temperature range studied.

Notes: Abstract Pulsed laser desorption sources are well suited to the production of ions to be stored in Paul radio-frequency quadrupole traps. With external injection, ions of different masses may be cleanly separated by time-of-flight and efficiently captured. Resonant ionization techniques may be used at the source for element selection.
