Notes: Abstract. By establishing an optimal comparison result on the heat kernel of the conformal Laplacian on open manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, (a) we show that many manifolds with positive scalar curvature do not possess conformal metrics with scalar curvature bounded below by a positive constant; (b) we identify a class of functions with the following property: If the manifold has a scalar curvature in this class, then there exists a complete conformal metric whose scalar curvature is any given function in this class. This class is optimal in some sense; (c) we have identified all manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, which are “uniformly” conformal to manifolds with zero scalar curvature. Even in the Euclidean case, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition under which the main existence results in [Ni1] and [KN] on prescribing nonnegative scalar curvature will hold. This condition had been sought in several papers in the last two decades.

Notes: Abstract: We obtain global in time and qualitatively sharp bounds for the heat kernel G of the Schrödinger operator −Δ +V. The potential V satisfies V(x)∼±C/d(x) b near infinity with b∈ (0, 2). When V≥ 0 our result can be described as follows: G is bounded from above and below by the multiples of standard Gaussians with a weight function. If b〉2 then the weight is bounded between two positive {\it constants}; if b=2, the weight is bounded between two positive functions of t, d(x) and d(y), which have polynomial decay; if b〈2, the weight is bounded between two positive functions of t, d(x) and d(y), which have exponential decay. Up to now satisfactory bounds for heat kernels can only be found when b〉2 or b〈0. An application to a semilinear elliptic problem is also given.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that in both the gluonic and strange sea explanations of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule violation discovered by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC), the spin of the proton, when viewed in its rest reference frame, could be fully provided by quarks and antiquarks within a simple quark model picture, taken into account the relativistic effect from the Wigner rotation.

Notes: Abstract We revise our previous calculation of the finite baryon size effect on the mass limit for neutron stars by making the formulation be relativistic. The result is still consistent with the observational data.

Notes: Abstract A previous thermodynamically consistent procedure for considering the finite volume effect of nucleons in nuclear matter is developed to be relativistic. Parameters are determined by fitting all five empirical data for normal nuclear matter. The resulting nuclear equations of state may be used in researches for neutron stars and for phase transitions between nuclear matter and quarkgluon plasma.

Notes: Abstract We show that Lee-Wick model for nuclear matter is compatible with the experimental knowledge on normal nuclei and thermodynamically consistent. We solve the problem for both the normal and abnormal finite nuclei from this model and have found critical mass numbersA 1=85 andA 2=l65. Only nuclei with mass numbersA≥A 1 may have bound abnormal states, and only abnormal nuclei with mass numbersA≥A 2 have binding energies larger than those of corresponding normal nuclei.

    Notes: Abstract We study the inhomogeneous semilinear wave equations $$\Delta u{\text{ + }}\left| u \right|^p - u_{tt} + w = 0$$ on $${\text{M}}^n \times \left( {0,\infty } \right)$$ with initial values $$u\left( {x,0} \right) = u_0 \left( x \right)$$ and $$u_t \left( {x,0} \right) = v_0 \left( x \right)$$ ,where $${\text{M}}^n $$ is a noncompact, complete manifold. We founda new critical behavior in the following sense. There exists ap* 〉 0. When 1 〈 p ≤ p*, the above problem hasno global solution for any nonnegative $$w = w\left( x \right)$$ not identicallyzero and for any $$u_0 $$ and $$v_0 $$ ; when $$p 〉 p^* $$ the problem has a global solution for some $$w = w\left( x \right) 〉 0$$ and some $$u_0 $$ and $$v_0 $$ . If $${\text{M}}^n = {\text{R}}^n $$ , which is equipped with the Euclideanmetric, then $$p^* = n/\left( {n - 2} \right),n \geqslant 3$$ . If $$n = 3$$ we show that $$p^* = 3$$ belongs to the blow upcase. Although homogeneous semilinear wave equations are known to exhibit acritical behavior for a long time, this seems to be the first result oninhomogeneous ones.
