Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the infrared active modes of meteoritic and synthetic tridymite have been investigated between 23 K and 1073 K in IR absorption and IR emission experiments. At room temperature both tridymite samples consist of a mixture of low temperature forms, in different proportions, due to the grinding. The sequence of phase transitions in Steinbach tridymite deduced from the IR data agrees well with recent X-ray and calorimetry studies using identical samples (Cellai et al. 1994). The previously suspected structural phase transition P6322⇔P63/mmc is confirmed by the disappearance of the 470 cm-1 mode and a temperature anomaly of the spectral shift of the 790 cm-1 mode. Changes in the infrared spectra of synthetic tridymite give a different sequence of phase transitions from those of the meteoritic sample, consistent with the structural phase transitions observed in a 29Si MAS NMR investigation using the same sample (Xiao et al. 1993).

Notes: Abstract Thin sections of a bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss) cell suspension culture, examined electron microscopically, revealed unusual, often lens-shaped, spaces in cell walls. Freeze-fracture replicas of similar material demonstrated the presence of lamellae within the cell walls, both within comparable lens-shaped spaces and more extensively at cell wall surfaces. The cell wall also displayed strong yellow-green autofluorescence. It is proposed that lipidic material is present in these cell walls, the chemical identity of which is presently under investigation.

Notes: Abstract. The objective of this study was to examine the value of NTx, a urinary cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen, as a marker of bone resorption. We assessed changes in pre- and postmenopausal bone resorption by evaluating the correlation of NTx with L2–4 bone mineral density (BMD) in a total of 1100 Japanese women, aged 19–80 years [272 premenopausal (45.2 ± 6.2 years) and 828 postmenopausal (59.5 ± 6.2 years)]. Postmenopausal women were divided into three groups based on the range of BMD (normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic). Within each group, subjects were further segregated according to years since menopause (YSM). NTx values were then evaluated for each group. Our results showed that BMD was significantly decreased (P 〈 0.05) and NTx was significantly increased (P 〈 0.01) after menopause in age-matched analysis. Consistent with a previous report, NTx was inversely correlated with BMD for the entire cohort of study subjects (r =−0.299), although NTx correlated better with premenopausal than postmenopausal BMD (r =−0.240 versus r =−0.086). This may have been due to the fact that elevated values of NTx were exhibited over the entire range of BMD present in the postmenopausal women, suggesting that NTx might respond faster to the estrogen withdrawal than BMD. In all postmenopausal women, regardless of the range of BMD, the increase in NTx reached a peak within 5 YSM. After 11 YSM, however, NTx remained elevated in the osteoporotic group but it decreased in the osteopenic group, and showed no significant change in the group of postmenopausal women with normal BMD. These findings suggest that bone resorption is dramatically increased within 5 years after menopause but remains increased only in osteoporotic women.

Notes: 2 ) prepared by a colloidal chemistry method. The evolution of the anatase phase upon annealing was characterized by frequency downshift, intensity increase, and linewidth sharpening of the lowest-frequency Eg mode. The rutile phase was shown to be stabilized at temperatures below 350 °C and was postulated to reside in the surface region of the nanophase. The beginning and ending temperatures for the anatase–rutile transformation in the nanophase were found to be lower than those in single crystals or polycrystalline powders. The microscopic mechanism of the phase transformation was analyzed and the surface effect was suggested. An anomalous phenomenon of amorphization was also detected at the end of the anatase–rutile transformation in the nanophase TiO2.

Notes: Abstract E(TO)-mode properties in LiTaO3:Nd crystal were examined by analyzing the Raman spectra measured.E(TO) modes appear in the transverseA 1 spectrum. Their intensities obviously increase in theE andE+A 1 mixed-symmetry spectra but decrease in theE spectrum which shows new vibrational modes. In particular, in the transverse-E spectrum of y(xz) $$\bar y$$ geometry, the properties ofE(TO) modes are similar to those of pure LiTaO3 of the same geometry, whereas in the transverse-E spectrum in x(yz) $$\bar x$$ geometry these modes are turned intoA 1 (TO) modes. We attribute these properties to both the surface strain produced by mechanical polishing of the sample and the microstructural change of the LiTaO3 crystal resulting from Nd doping.

Notes: Abstract Raman spectra have been investigated in PbTiO3 thin films grown on Si by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. A large grazing-angle scattering technique was taken to measure the temperature dependence of Raman spectra below room temperature. All Raman modes in the thin films are assigned and compared with those in the bulk single crystal, a newA 1(TO) soft mode at 104 cm−1 was recorded which satisfies the Curie-Weiss relationω 2 =A(T c −T). Intensities of theA 1(1TO) andE(1TO) modes were anomalously strengthened with increasing temperature. Raman modes for the thin films exhibit remarkable frequency downshift and upshift which is related to the effect of internal stress.

Notes: 16  /cm2 He+ implantation were investigated by slow-positron annihilation technique, transmission electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering, and channeling spectroscopy. It was found that small vacancy clusters were induced in the surface region and big clusters (microbubbles) formed around the projected range in which the crystal was heavily damaged by the implantation. The small vacancy clusters in the near-surface region start to disappear at 300 °C and can be removed at temperatures up to 700 °C by dissociation and diffusing to the damaged region. This results in the growth of voids. The severely damaged region around the projected range begins to anneal out at temperatures higher than 600 °C, and He is released, leaving voids embedded inside the crystalline silicon.
