    Notes: Abstract. Influence of membrane physical state on the proton permeability of isolated lysosomes was assessed by measuring the membrane potential with 3,3′-dipropylthiadicarbocyanine iodide and monitoring their proton leakage with p-nitrophenol. Changes in the membrane order were examined by the steady-state fluorescence anisotropy of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene. Both the membrane potential and proton leakage increased with fluidizing the lysosomal membranes by benzyl alcohol and decreased with rigidifying the membranes by cholesteryl hemisuccinate. The proton permeability increased to the maximum of 42% by the benzyl alcohol treatment and decreased to the minimum of 38.1% by the cholesteryl hemisuccinate treatment. Treating the lysosomes with protonophore CCCP increased the proton permeability by 58%. The effects of the membrane fluidization and rigidification can be reversed by rigidifying the fluidized membranes and fluidizing the rigidified membranes, respectively. The results indicate that the proton permeability of lysosomes increased and decreased with increasing and decreasing their membrane fluidity, respectively. Moreover, the lysosomal proton permeability did not alter further if the changes, either an increase or a decrease, in the fluidity exceeded some amount. The results suggest that the proton permeability of lysosomes can be modulated finitely by the alterations in their membrane physical state.

    Notes: Summary The prebiotic formation of histidine (His) has been accomplished experimentally by the reacton of erythrose with formamidine followed by a Strecker synthesis. In the first step of this reaction sequence, the formation of imidazole-4-acetaldehyde took place by the condensation of erythrose and formamidine, two compounds that are known to be formed under prebiotic conditions. In a second step, the imidazole-4-acetaldehyde was converted to His, without isolation of the reaction products by adding HCN and ammonia to the reaction mixture. LC, HPLC, thermospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and tandem mass spectrometry were used to identify the product, which was obtained in a yield of 3.5% based on the ratio of His/erythrose. This is a new chemical synthesis of one of the basic amino acids which has not been synthesized prebiotically until now.

    Notes: Abstract. Double-ended alkanedithiols, 1,9-nonanedithiol and 1,5-pentanedithiol, formed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(l11) substrates and were used to adsorb silver ions from an ethanolic solution of silver nitrate and formed Ag–dithiol–Au multilayer structures. Ellipsometry, contact angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the alkanedithiol molecules formed SAMs with only one-ended thiol groups attached to the Au substrates, which was supported by molecular mechanics calculation. XPS and X-ray Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) indicated that silver ions were deposited onto the SAMs from the solution by the chemical reaction of silver nitrate with another-ended thiol groups of the SAMs. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe SAMs and multilayer structures.

    Notes: Abstract The cellular neural network (CNN) architecture combines the best features from traditional fully-connected analog neural networks and digital cellular automata. The network can rapidly process continuous-valued (gray-scale) input signals (such as images) and perform many computation functions which traditionally were implemented in digital form. Here, we briefly introduce the the theory of CNN circuits, provide some examples of CNN applications to image processing, and discuss work toward a CNN implementation in custom CMOS VLSI. The role of analog computer-aided design (CAD) will be briefly presented as it relates to analog neural network implementation.

    Notes: Abstract  The stoichiometry, stability, and structure of the inclusion complex between the photosurfactants, 2-[4-(4-alkylphenylazo) phenoxy]ethyltrimethylammonium bromides (alkyl=ethyl, and butyl, where the abbreviations are EZ and BZ, and ZT for both, respectively), and γ-cyclodextrins (γ-CDx) in aqueous solution have been studied by the induced circular dichroism (ICD) and UV/VIS spectra as well as the potentiometric titration method. It is shown that the trans-ZT/γ-CDx systems form not only 1:1 (EZ) or 2:2 (BZ) but also 2:1 (ZT:γ-CDx) inclusion complexes. On the contrary, the steric hindrance of cis-ZT destabilizes the inclusion so that there is only 1:1 complex formation with γ-CDx. The thermodynamic discussion suggests that the stability of ZT complex is governed by the hydrophobic and the van der Waals interaction between the photosurfactants and cyclodextrins. However, the van der Waals interaction is more predominant in the trans-ZT/α-CDx system than in the β- and γ-CDx’s except for (BZ/γ-CDx)2 system. Moreover, the alkylchain-length dependence of the free energy changes of complex formation of ZT and CDx are less than those of micellization of ZT because the cavity depth of CDx is limited to incorporate all hydrophobic parts of ZT. Finally, the iso-equibrium temperature is estimated by the compensation plot of thermo-dynamic parameters.

    Notes: Abstract X-radiography was used to study annual linear skeletal extension rates of the reef-building scleractinian corals Diploria strigosa and Diploria labyrinthiformis from the high-latitude reefs of Bermuda. Coral samples for X-radiography were collected from seven localities of varying biotopes and depths around the Bermuda platform and band couplets were measured. Mean extension rates of both species were highest on inshore and nearshore reefs, gradually decreasing towards the edge of the Bermuda platform and onto the fore-reef slope. Extension rates of D. labyrinthiformis were statistically higher than those of D. strigosa at three localities, while at the other four, the rates of both species were not statistically separable. extension rates of d. labyrinthiformis were statistically higher than D. strigosa within depths of 20 m and 32 m but not statistically separable at 3 m and 6 m depths. Extension rates of both species decreased significantly with increasing depth (r 2=0.92, P〈0.03 for D. labyrinthiformis and r 2=0.95, P〈0.02 for D. strigosa). Each species showed an inverse curvilinear relationship between extension rate and depth, the rate of change (i.e. slope) being the same for each species. Comparison of extension rates of each species from Berumuda with published rates of these species from lower latitudes showed an inverse relationship between extension rate and latitude.

    Notes: Abstract Atopic dermatitis is a common skin disease frequently associated with allergic disorders such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. Controversial linkage findings between atopy and markers at chromosome 11q13 led us to search chromosome 11 for genes conferring susceptibility to atopic dermatitis and atopy. Twelve families were investigated using highly polymorphic markers and a powerful model-free linkage test. Two markers gave evidence for linkage, D11S903 (P = 0.02) and FCER1B (P = 0.005). A two-point lod-score analysis between these two markers revealed significant evidence for linkage (z max = 4.02 at (θ = 0.0). In regard to model-dependent lod-score analyses between atopic disorders and FCER1B, two-point analysis gave a lod score of z = 0.78 whereas two-locus analysis using a recessive-dominant mode of inheritance displayed a significant lod score of z = 3.55. Only 2 of 12 families showed evidence for linkage using the latter oligogenic model. In conclusion, the results of our study map the FCER1B gene in close proximity to D11S903, support the finding of Cookson et al. implicating the IgE high-affinity receptor gene (FCER1B) at 11q13, and furthermore suggest an oligogenic mode of inheritance as well as heterogeneity in the genetic susceptibility to atopy and atopic dermatitis.
