    Notes: Abstract In seismic exploration, elastic waves are sent to investigate subsurface geology. However, the transmission and interpretation of the elastic wave propagation is complicated by various factors. One major reason is that the earth can be a very complex medium. Nevertheless, in this paper, we model some terrestrial material as an elastic medium consisting of randomly distributed inclusions with a considerable concentration. The waves incident on such an inhomogeneous medium undergo multiple scattering due to the presence of inclusions. Consequently, the wave energy is redistributed thereby reducing the amplitude of the coherent wave. The coherent or average wave is assumed to be propagating in a homogeneous continuum characterized by a bulk complex wavenumber. This wavenumber depends on the frequency of the probing waves; and on the physical properties and the concentration of discrete scatterers, causing the effective medium to be dispersive. With the help of multiple scattering theory, we are able to analytically predict the attenuation of the transmitted wave intensity as well as the dispersion of the phase velocity. These two sets of data are valuable to the study of the inverse scattering problems in seismology. Some numerical results are presented and also compared, if possible, with experimental measurements.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of different cleaning procedures on Si(111) wafers has been studied. A three-step cleaning process was used. The first two steps (thermal oxidation followed by RCA cleaning) were common to all samples. The final step involved rinsing in one of a set of HF/NH4F buffer solutions with a wide range ofpH values. Three different surface techniques were used for characterizing the chemical condition and morphology of the treated surfaces: XPS (X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy), REM (Reflection Electron Microscopy) and SIMS (Secondary-Ion Mass Spectroscopy). It has been found that thepH value of an HF solution does significantly affect the etching rate and morphology of the Si(111) surface: For the same type of solution, the smaller thepH value, the higher the etching rate. Basic solutions withpH values larger than eight have a much weaker etching effect on the surface, which is contradictory to some previous reports. The most effective solutions for the etching of the Si(111) surface are the solutions of HF buffered by NH4F, with thepH in the range of 2–6. REM images indicate that the surface morphology after etching in the HF solution is strongly affected by the length of the etching time: Overetching will roughen the surface. The SIMS data show that water rinsing in air during the cleaning process does speed up oxidation, but it is necessary to use water to clean off the residuals from the HF solutions.

    Notes: Abstract Bulk superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x powder has been synthesized by a solution technique using a mixture of Ba-ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) and [Y, Cu]-citric acid complexes. A light-blue, molecular-level, homogeneously mixed precursor was prepared, and transferred to powder form through vacuum drying. The vacuum-dried powder was decomposed at 800 °C for 4 h under flowing oxygen, then heat treated at high temperature from 850 to 950 °C for 6–12 h. The results ofT c measurements and X-ray analysis show that the orthorhombic, superconducting phase can be formed at temperatures above 850 °C following low-temperature annealing. A sharp transition (ΔT≃2 K) and high density can be achieved after 930 °C heat treatment. The 930 °C heat treated sample shows aJ c value of 510 A cm−2. It is concluded that this solution technique provides better stoichiometric control and lower reaction temperature than the conventional solid-state sintering process.

    Notes: Burkholderia sp. AA1 isolated from a diesel fuel-contaminated site degraded toluene, as well as a wide range of alkanes from decane (C8) to pentacosane (C25) as sole carbon and energy sources. This strain also utilized m-toluate, p-toluate, o-toluate, and m-cresol as sole carbon and energy sources. Toluene- and toluate-grown cells showed catechol 2,3-dioxygenase activity and indole oxidation activity that is exhibited by some toluene oxygenation enzymes. The catechol 2,3-dioxygenase gene (catB) was cloned and sequenced. Its deduced amino acid sequence is analogous to the extradiol dioxygenases cloned from a variety of microorganisms. A DNA fragment containing the genes for the indole oxidation activity was cloned and sequenced. A seven-gene cluster designated as tbhABCDEFG was identified. Significant similarities were found with multicomponent monooxygenase systems for toluene, benzene and phenol from different bacterial strains.     Notes: Abstract The changes in nuclear ultrastructure during garlic development were investigated. In quiescent cells, the nucleus was oblate and small, full of heterochromatin, and without nucleolus. In the active phase cells, the nucleus moved toward the center of the cell, and was enlarged with many deep fissures, and the heterochromatin in the nucleus turned to be euchromatin. One or more nucleoli were seen in active phase cells. Cell divisions were by means of amitosis. Relatively large nuclei with small distortions were seen in the callus cells. These results suggest that the metabolism of the active cells was higher than that of callus and quiescent cells.

    Notes: Abstract. We describe a new, highly sensitive semiquantitative method for rapid measurement of in vitro mineralization using calcein. Fluorescence analysis of the calcein bound to the calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite) allows direct quantitation of extracellular matrix mineral content in monolayer cultures of bone-forming cells such as primary osteoblasts or osteosarcoma cells. Osteosarcoma cell lines UMR 106 and SaOS-2 were used to demonstrate that qualitatively, calcein was bound to the same regions of the mineralized cell monolayer as seen by conventional histological staining with von Kossa or Alizarin Red S. Moreover, total bound calcein could be quantitated by direct fluorescence analysis using a Cytofluor II plate reader. Changes in cell monolayer calcein fluorescence were shown to correlate well with direct colorimetric measurement of acid-solubilized Ca+2 from parallel cultures. Relative mineral quantitation by calcein fluorescence is rapid and more sensitive than colorimetric Ca+2 assays, can be performed directly on unfixed or fixed cell monolayers, and does not require the use of radioisotopes. The cell monolayer remains intact and potentially available for further analysis.

    Notes: Abstract. We study comparator networks for selection, merging, and sorting that output the correct result with high probability, given a random input permutation. We prove tight bounds, up to constant factors, on the size and depth of probabilistic (n,k)-selection networks. In the case of (n, n/2)-selection, our result gives a somewhat surprising bound of $\Theta(n \log \log n)$ on the size of networks of success probability in $[\delta, 1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)]$ , where δ is an arbitrarily small positive constant, thus comparing favorably with the best previously known solutions, which have size $\Theta(n\log n)$ . We also prove tight bounds, up to lower-order terms, on the size and depth of probabilistic merging networks of success probability in $[\delta, 1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)]$ , where δ is an arbitrarily small positive constant. Finally, we describe two fairly simple probabilistic sorting networks of success probability at least $1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)$ and nearly logarithmic depth.
