    Notes: Abstract  We describe embryonic development of the Bombyx silk gland. To extend the analysis further we isolated a Bombyx counterpart gene ofthe Drosophila trachealess (trh) gene. Bombyx trh encodes a protein of 849 amino acids. When compared with the amino acid sequence of Drosophila trh, the identity of Bombyx bHLH, PAS-A and PAS-B domains is 100%, 97%, and 80%, respectively. Northern blot analysis revealed the presence of a single Bombyx trh transcript of 5.4 kb. We analyzed the expression pattern of the Bombyx trh transcript during embryogenesis by in situ hybridization. Bombyx trh mRNA was first detected in the tracheal primordial cells at around embryonic stage 18. Thereafter levels of Bombyx trh mRNA increased, and the high expression level was maintained until hatching. At embryonic stage 19 the transcript was also detected in the posterior basal region of the labial segment from where the silk gland invaginates. By the blastokinesis stage (around stage 23), the silk gland was lengthened, and, interestingly, the Bombyx trh transcript was restricted to the anterior silk gland. These results suggest that Bombyx trh plays a role in the formation of the trachea and the anterior silk glands.

    Notes: Abstract  The expression pattern of the POU-M1/SGF-3 gene during Bombyx embryogenesis has been analysed using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. At the early embryo retraction stage, both the transcripts and protein were first detected in precursor cells of the prothoracic glands in the labial segment, in the oenocytes in the A1–A8 segments and in invaginated regions in the mandibular and maxillary segments. The invaginated regions in the mandibular segment develop into the abductor plates in the lateral anterior region and the adductor plates in the posterior region. From the latter plates, the salivary glands elongate. The invaginated regions in the maxillary segment develop into the corpora allata in the anterior region and the subbuccal glands in the posterior region, which unite with tissues of the anterior region of the mandibular segment at later stages. After the embryo retraction stage, the transcripts and protein products also become detectable in the silk gland invagination points and, after the blastokinesis stage, the products are restricted to the entire anterior silk glands and to the anterior and middle parts of the middle silk glands. Expression can also be detected in a part of the hindgut, in the tracheal system and in some cells of the central nervous system. These results indicate that POU-M1/SGF-3 might play roles in the development of the silk glands, nervous system, tracheal system and other organs like the prothoracic glands and oenocytes.

    Notes: Abstract A new generation of electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes have been fabricated and superficially modified by a special controlled precorrosion process. The electrodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), resistance–capacitance measurements (RCM) and simulated defibrillation recovery (SDR). The resulting surface of the Sn alloys was rough, and, consequently, a large active surface area was available. As a result, a higher electrocardiogram electrode performance, including low alternating current (a.c.) impedance, excellent time stability and improved SDR, was achieved. Such new design can surely find important future applications in clinical diagnosis. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to study various aspects of star products on a symplectic manifold related to the Fedosov method. By introducing the notion of “quantum exponential maps” we give a characterization of Fedosov connections. As an application, a geometric realization is obtained for the equivalence between an arbitrary *-product and a Fedosov one. Every Fedosov *-product is shown to be a Vey *-product. Consequently, we find that every *-product is equivalent to a Vey *-product, a classical result of Lichnerowicz. Quantization of a hamiltonian G-space, and in particular, quantum momentum maps are studied. Lagrangian submanifolds are also studied under a deformation quantization.

Least-squares adjustment with inequality constraints is equivalent to solving a linear complementarity problem (LCP) with a positive definite matrix; the latter has, however, received little attention in geodesy. Two kinds of LCP solution methods (direct and approximation) have been analysed from the point of view of solution stability. It has been found that they can result in an unreliable solution to an unstable LCP with a positive definite matrix, the extent of which depends on the corresponding submatrix. Several proposals for improving the solutions to the unstable LCP are suggested. Two examples are given.

    Notes: Abstract A kinetic model of continuous treatment of waste water by Rhodopseudomonas palustris Y6 immobilized on soft fibre in a columnar bioreaction system was established. Good agreement was found between the model prediction and the experimental data from continuous operation [initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration = 29.700 g/l] of the system. The optimum operational conditions for the maximum COD reduction capacity were investigated from the model prediction and the experimental data. The waste water treatment process may significantly increase the waste reduction capacity because a large amount of active biomass for COD reduction is immobilized in the system, resulting in operation stability. The results presented here provide a useful basis for further scaling up and efficient operation of waste water treatment processes.

    Notes: Abstract Members of the (1→3)-β-glucan glucanohydrolase (EC 3.2.1.39) gene family have been mapped on the barley genome using three doubled haploid populations and seven wheat-barley addition lines. Specific probes or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were generated for the seven barley (1→3)-β-glucanase genes for which cDNA or genomic clones are currently available. The seven genes are all located on the long arm of chromosome 3 (3HL), and genes encoding isoenzymes GI, GII, GIII, GIV, GV and GVII (ABG2) are clustered in a region less than 20 cM in length. The region is flanked by the RFLP marker MWG2099 on the proximal side and the Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BYMV) resistance gene ym4 at the distal end. The gene encoding isoenzyme GVI lies approximately 50 cM outside this cluster, towards the centromere. With the exception of the gene encoding isoenzyme GIV, all of the (1→3)-β-glucanase genes are represented by single copies on the barley genome. The probe for the isoenzyme GIV gene hybridized with four DNA bands during Southern blot analysis, only one of which could be incorporated into the consensus linkage map.
