    Notes: Summary Changes in extracellular pH (pH o ) in human red cell suspensions were monitored in a stopped-flow rapid reaction apparatus. A 20% suspension of washed human RBC in saline at pH 7 containing NaHCO3 and extracellular carbonic anhydrase was mixed with an equal volume of buffered saline solution at pH 6.7. Sodium salicylate, when present, was added to both the erythrocyte suspension and the buffer solution. The effects of salicylate in the therapeutic to toxic concentration range on HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange were studied at 37°C. HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange flux was estimated using the extracellular buffer capacity and the difference betweendpH o /dt using a control RBC suspension and that using a suspension of RBC whose anion exchange pathway was markedly inhibited. The results show that salicylate competitively decreases the rate of HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange, with inhibition increasing as salicylate concentration increases.K I is ∼2.4mm. At a salicylate concentration of 10mm, HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange under the conditions of our experiments was inhibited by more than 70%. These findings are consistent with the possibility that CO2 transfer in capillary bedsin vivo may be diminished in the presence of salicylate due to slowing of red cell HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange.

    Notes: Abstract In Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase and fructose 1,6-bisphosphate phosphatase were studied, which could not be detected in previous investigations. Aldolase appeared to be a class I enzyme. Enzyme activity was only detectable in direction of aldol condensation in presence of Mg2+ and under anaerobic conditions. It was stimulated by dithioerythritol. The regulatory properties of the hexose bisphosphate phosphatase differed in many ways from those of the enzyme from other organisms.

    Notes: Abstract Network polymers near their gel point exhibit selfsimilar mechanical behavior, as expressed by power law relaxations. The range of selfsimilarity is defined by two limiting length scales. The upper limit is the correlation length, defined by the linear size of the typical cluster, and a lower limit, roughly given by the size of one preformed linear chain, i. e., the mean distance between crosslinks. The correlation length increases with the approach to the gel point, and diverges at the critical extent of reaction, i. e., the gel point where the infinite cluster is formed. Above the gel point, it decreases again with further crosslinking. Dynamic mechanical measurements of the complex modulus at the gel point show a power law in the frequency dependence over the entire frequency range, monitoring selfsimilarity. Swelling effects reduce the fractal dimension of the percolation cluster form 2.5 to 2. It is shown how the power law G(ω) ∼ω 1/2, found by experiment, is connected to the structure of the polymeric cluster.

    Notes: Abstract We investigated the stress relaxation behavior of critical gels originating from six nearly monodisperse, highly entangled polybutadiene melts of different molecular weight from 18000 to 97 000 g/mole. The polymers were vulcanized by a hydrosilation reaction which takes place nearly exclusively at the pendant 1,2-vinyl sites distributed randomly along the polybutadiene chain. The BSW spectrum represents the relaxation of the initial uncrosslinked precursor. A characteristic parameter is the longest relaxation time of the precursor. Crosslinking increases this longest time even further. Surprisingly, the relaxation spectrum of the precursor is not altered much by the crosslinking except for an additional long time behavior. At the gel point (critical gel), this long time behavior is self-similar. It follows the typical power law as described by the Chambon-Winter gel equation, G(t) = St −n , in the terminal zone. The critical relaxation exponent was found to be close to n = 0.5 over a range of stoichiometric ratios and for all precursor molecular weights analyzed. A new scaling relationship was found between the gel stiffness, S, and the precursor molecular weight of the form: S ∼ M w zn , where exponent z from the zero shear viscosity-molecular weight relationship, η0 ∼ M w z , is commonly found to be z = 3.3 – 3.6.

    Notes: Summary Extensional flows can induce miscibility in a polymer blend of polystyrene with poly(vinyl methyl ether). Miscibility is observed as a change from turbidity to optical clarity when a phase separated blend flows isothermally in planar extension. In a start-up experiment at temperatures above the LCST, optical clarity does not appear instantaneously but after a time which depends on the rate of extension and the temperature, and it appears first near the region of highest extension. This effect is opposite to the observation for polymer solutions which exhibit shear-induced demixing. We attribute this to the fact that enthalpic effects largely determine blend miscibility, while the phase behavior of solutions is essentially controlled by entropic contributions. Since a deformation field decreases the configurational degrees of freedom of a polymer molecule, demixing is favored in solutions. However, the alteration of specific interactions rather than this entropic effect appears to be much more important in blends.

    Notes: Abstract Monilethrix is a rare dominant hair disease characterized by beaded or moniliform hair which results from the periodic thinning of the hair shaft and shows a high propensity to excess weathering and fracturing. Several cases of monilethrix have been linked to the type II keratin gene cluster on chromosome 12q13 and causative heterozygous mutations of a highly conserved glutamic acid residue (Glu 410 Lys and Glu 410 Asp) in the helix termination motif of the type II hair keratin hHb6 have recently been identified in monilethrix patients of two unrelated families. In the present study, we have investigated two further unrelated monilethrix families as well as a single case. Affected members of one family and the single patient exhibited the prevalent hHb6 Glu 410 Lys mutation. In the second family, we identified in affected individuals a lysine substitution of the corresponding glutamic acid residue, Glu 403, in the type II hair keratin hHb1, suggesting that this site represents a mutational hotspot in these highly related type II hair keratins. Both hHb1 and hHb6 are largely coexpressed in cortical trichocytes of the hair shaft. This indicates that monilethrix is a disease of the hair cortex.

    Notes: Abstract  Blackleg caused by Leptosphaeria maculans is one of the most important diseases affecting oilseed rape worldwide. Sinapis arvensis is valuable for the transfer of blackleg resistance to oilseed rape (Brassica napus) because this species contains high resistance against various aggressive isolates of the blackleg fungus. These include at least one Australian isolate which has been found to overcome resistance originating from species with the Brassica B genome, until now the major source for interspecific transfer of blackleg resistance. Backcross offspring from intergeneric crosses between Brassica napus and S. arvensis were subjected to phytopathological studies and molecular cytogenetic analysis with genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH). The BC3S progenies included fertile plants exhibiting high seedling (cotyledon) and adult plant resistance associated with the presence of an acrocentric addition chromosome from S. arvensis. In addition, some individuals with adult plant resistance but cotyledon susceptibility were observed to have a normal B. napus karyotype with no visible GISH signals, indicating possible resistant introgression lines. Phytopathological analysis of selfing progenies from 3 different highly resistant BC3 plants showed that seedling and adult plant resistance are probably conferred by different loci.

    Notes: Abstract We use KKR-bandstructure data and apply recently developed Brillouin-zone integration techniques to evaluate the wavevector dependent spin susceptibilities of Pd and V within the RPA and the local spin density functional approach. Additionally we calculate the electron-spin fluctuation coupling function and show-in agreement with our previous work-that this kind of theory yields reasonable values for the electron mass enhancement.
