Notes: Abstract. New Einstein metrics are constructed on the associated ${\Bbb R}{\Bbb P}^2$ , $S^2$ , and ${\Bbb R}^2$ -bundles of principal circle bundles with base a product of Kähler-Einstein manifolds with positive first Chern class and with Euler class a rational linear combination of the first Chern classes. These Einstein metrics represent different generalizations of the well-known Einstein metrics found by Bérard Bergery, D. Page, C. Pope, N. Koiso, and Y. Sakane. Corresponding new Einstein-Weyl structures are also constructed.

Notes: Abstract Let $$L_{\left( {k^n } \right)}$$ (p) denote the subgroup lattice of the abelianp-group $$(Z/p^k Z) \times \cdots \times (Z/p^k Z)(ntimes).$$ . It is conjectured that the lattice has the Sperner property. Whenk=1, the conjecture is true since it is isomorphic to the subspace lattice, and Stanley has confirmed it fork=2. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture is generally true.

Notes: Abstract Based on the generalized mode theory of linear vibrating defective systems, an identification method of generalized modal parameters is presented in this paper. By the use of this method, which combines the direct method with the iteration method in frequency domain, all the generalized modal parameters can be identified without any initial value. It is shown that the present method is effective and useful.

Notes: Summary Rice cells were precultured for 10 d in medium containing 60 g/L sucrose and subsequently for 1 d in medium supplemented with 0. 4 M sorbitol. After loading with 25%PVS2 at 22°C for 10 min and dehydration in 100%PVS2 at 0°C for 7. 5 min, they were plunged into liquid nitrogen directly. Survival was 45. 0 ±5.1% (based on the reduction of triphenyl tetrazolium chloride)following warming and unloading. For regrowth, cells were plated on semi-solid medium replenished with 40%(w/v) starch for 2d prior to reculture. Cell suspensions were reestablished and plants were regenerated from recovered cells. Twenty eight plants set seeds in the greenhouse.

Notes: Abstract Metal cutting plays an important role in manufacturing industries. Optimisation of cutting parameters represents a key component in machining process planning. In this paper, a neural network based approach to multiple-objective optimization of cutting parameters is presented. First, the problem of determining the optimum machining parameters is formulated as a multiple-objective optimization problem. Then, neural networks are proposed to represent manufacturers' preference structures. To demonstrate the procedure and performance of the neural network approach, an illustrative example is discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract A series of Al‐MCM‐41 mesoporous materials with different Si/Al ratios are synthesized. The acidities of catalysts are measured by the temperature‐programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3‐TPD) and IR spectra of pyridine. Their catalytic activities for hydrogenation of benzene, toluene and o‐xylene are investigated on a pulse reactor system. NH3‐TPD and IR results show that only weak and medium acid sites could be observed on the catalysts, and the number of total acid sites decreases obviously with the increase of the Si/Al ratio whereas the medium acid sites are somewhat constant. The introduction of platinum onto Al‐MCM‐41 material decreases the total acid number by a small amount. The hydrogenation activities of the 1% Pt/HAl‐MCM‐41 catalysts are found to correspond well with the ratio of medium acid sites to total acid sites in the employed catalysts. It is proposed that, in addition to metal sites, the acid sites in the metal–acid interfacial regions are also the active sites for hydrogenation and the medium acid sites play important roles in the reaction.

Notes: Abstract In manufacturing industries, sampling inspection is a common practice for quality assurance and cost reduction. The basic decisions in sampling inspection are how many manufactured items to be sampled from each lot and how many identified defective items in the sample to accept or reject each lot. Because of the combinatorial nature of alternative solutions on the sample sizes and acceptance criteria, the problem of determining an optimal sampling plan is NP-complete. In this paper, a neurally-inspired approach to generating acceptance sampling inspection plans is proposed. A Bayesian cost model of multi-stage-multi-attribute sampling inspections for quality assurance in serial production systems is formulated. This model can accommodate various dispositions of rejected lott such as scraping and screening. The model also can reflect the relationships between stages and among attributes. To determine the sampling plans based on the formulated model, a neurally-inspired stochastic algorithm is developed. This algorithm simulates the state transition of a primal-dual stochastic neural network to generate the sampling plans. The simulated primal network is responsible for generation of new states whereas the dual network is for recording the generated solutions. Starting with an arbitrary feasible solution, this algorithm is able to converge to a near optimal or an optimal sampling plan with a sequence of monotonically improved solutions. The operating characteristics and performance of the algorithm are demonstratedvia numerical examples.

    Notes: Abstract Let Ln(q) denote the lattice of subspaces of ann-dimensional vector space over the finite field of q elements, ordered byinclusion. In this note, we prove that for all n and m the minimum cutsetfor an element A with $$\dim (A) = m{\text{ of }}L_n (q)$$ is justL(A) if m 〈 n/ 2, is U(A) if m 〉 n/ 2, and both L(A) andU(A) if m = n/ 2, where L(A) is the collection of all $$X \in {\text{ }}L_n (q)$$ such that $$X \nsubseteq A$$ and $$\dim (X \cap A) = \dim (X) - 1$$ , and U(A) the collection of all $$Y \in {\text{ }}L_n (q)$$ such that $$A \nsubseteq Y$$ and $$\dim (Y + A) = \dim (Y) + 1$$ . Hence a finite vector space analog isgiven for the theorem of Griggs and Kleitman that determines all the minimumcutsets for an element of a Boolean algebra.

    Topics: Biology
Notes: Abstract A peptide ranging from residue 229 to 240 of the D1 protein of Photosystem (PS) II was synthesized and lanthanides were used as candidates of calcium. Fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopy were used to test the conformational adaptation after lanthanide additions. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the synthetic peptide provides lanthanide binding site, and that glutamic acids are involved in lanthanide binding. Resolution enhancement techniques were combined with band curve-fitting procedures to quantitate the FTIR spectral information from the amide 1 bands. The relative areas of these component bands indicate that lanthanide induced a substantial decrease in the amount of unordered structure and turns, while a corresponding increase in the amount of α-helix and ‘open loop’ was also observed. This indicates that a relatively compact structure of the synthetic peptide is formed if lanthanides are applied. The results may reflect on the physiological and biochemical function of calcium in PS II, including preventing D1 from trypsin digestion.
