    Notes: Abstract The relationship between food intake and metabolic rate (as measured by oxygen consumption) of Carcinus maenas (L.) was studied. The metabolic rate of feeding crabs which had been starved for a short period increased, and several days were required for it to return to its original level. During prolonged starvation, the metabolic rate of C. maenas fell in two stages. The first reduction was to about 60% of the “feeding level”; this occurred during the first week of starvation. There was then a further reduction to about 40% of the “feeding level” and, at this level of metabolism, the crabs were able to survive for 3 months, with only 50% mortality; most of this occurred in the last 2 weeks. Metabolic rate was found to affect food intake; crabs acclimated to 24°C took 2.4 times as much food as crabs acclimated to 10°C, although the metabolic levels of the two groups differed by a factor of only 1.4. From the results obtained when the crabs were starved and when starved crabs were fed, it is suggested that, during starvation, the metabolic rate of C. maenas first drops from the elevated “feeding level” to a level at which carbohydrate reserves are utilised, and subsequently to a minimum level at which lipid reserves and proteins are used.

    Notes: Abstract  LDV measurements are commonly made in spark ignition engines to investigate the interaction between the flow field and the combustion process. To achieve high LDV data rates relatively large quantities of seed particles must be introduced into the engine intake flow. Based on the measurement of the characteristic engine operating parameters, it was determined that the introduction of TiO2 seed particles into an optical L-head research engine fuelled by natural gas at stoichiometric and lean conditions did not significantly influence the combustion process.

    Notes: Abstract The Hydrologic Atmospheric Pilot EXperiment in the Sahel (HAPEX-Sahel) was carried out in Niger, West Africa, during 1991 - 1992, with an intensive observation period (IOP) in August - October 1992. It aims at improving the parameterization of land surface atmosphere interactions at the Global Circulation Model (GCM) gridbox scale. The experiment combines remote sensing and ground based measurements with hydrological and meteorological modelling to develop aggregation techniques for use in large scale estimates of the hydrological and meteorological behaviour of large areas in the Sahel. The experimental strategy consisted of a period of intensive measurements during the transition period of the rainy to the dry season, backed up by a series of long term measurements in a 1^ by 1^ square in Niger. Three “supersites” were instrumented with a variety of hydrological and (micro) meteorological equipment to provide detailed information on the surface energy exchange at the local scale. Boundary layer measurements and aircraft measurements were used to provide information at scales of 100 - 500 km2. All relevant remote sensing images were obtained for this period. This programme of measurements is now being analyzed and an extensive modelling programme is under way to aggregate the information at all scales up to the GCM grid box scale. The experimental strategy and some preliminary results of the IOP are described.

    Notes: ABSTRACT Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is an abundant form of organic matter in stream ecosystems. Most research has focused on the watershed as the source of DOC in streams, but DOC also comes from leaching of organic matter stored in the stream channel. We used a whole-ecosystem experimental approach to assess the significance of leaching of organic matter in the channel as a source of DOC in a headwater stream. Inputs of leaf litter were excluded from a forested Appalachian headwater stream for 3 years. Stream-water concentration, export, and instream generation of DOC were reduced in the litter-excluded stream as compared with a nearby untreated reference stream. The proportion of high molecular weight (HMW) DOC (more than 10,000 daltons) in stream water was not altered by litter exclusion. Mean DOC concentration in stream water was directly related to benthic leaf-litter standing stock. Instream generation of DOC from leaf litter stored in the stream channel contributes approximately 30% of daily DOC exports in this forested headwater stream. This source of DOC is greatest during autumn and winter and least during spring and summer. It is higher during increasing discharge than during base flow. We conclude that elimination of litter inputs from a forested headwater stream has altered the biogeochemistry of DOC in this ecosystem.

We establish a strong duality result and show that stationary dual prices are optimal, regardless of initial conditions.     Notes: Abstract Ecosystem disturbances produce changes in macrobenthic community structure (abundances, biomass, and production) that persist for a few weeks to many decades. Examples of disturbances with extremely long-term effects on benthic communities include contamination by persistent toxic agents, physical changes in habitats, and altered energy inputs. Stream size, retention, and local geomorphology may ameliorate the influence of disturbances on invertebrates. Disturbances can alter food webs and may select for favorable genotypes (e.g., insecticidal resistance). Introductions of pesticides into lotic ecosystems, which do not result in major physical changes within habitats, illustrate several factors that influence invertebrate recovery time from disturbance. These include: (1) magnitude of original contamination, toxicity, and extent of continued use; (2) spatial scale of the disturbance; (3) persistence of the pesticide; (4) timing of the contamination in relation to the life history stages of the organisms; (5) vagility of populations influenced by pesticides; and (6) position within the drainage network. The ability of macroinvertebrates to recolonize denuded stream habitats may vary greatly depending on regional life histories, dispersal abilities, and position within the stream network (e.g., headwaters vs larger rivers). Although downstream drift is the most frequently cited mechanism of invertebrate recolonization following disturbance in middle- and larger-order streams, evidence is presented that shows aerial recolonization to be potentially important in headwater streams. There is an apparent stochastic element operating for aerial recolonization, depending on the timing of disturbance and flight periods of various taxa. Available evidence indicates that recolonization of invertebrate taxa without an aerial adult stage requires longer periods of time than for those that possess winged, terrestrial adult stages (i.e., most insects). Innovative, manipulative experiments are needed in order to address recolonization mechanisms of animals inhabiting streams that differ in size, latitude, disturbance frequency and magnitude, as well as the potential influence of early colonists on successional sequences of species following disturbance.

    Notes: Abstract A calibration technique for multiple-sensor hot-wire probes is presented. The technique, which requires minimal information about the probe geometry, is tested using a four-sensor and a twelve-sensor probe. Two data reduction algorithms are introduced. The first one assumes a uniform velocity over the probe sensing-volume and is applied to the four-sensor probe measurements. The second one assumes a uniform velocity gradient over the sensing volume of the probe. The procedure, when applied to the twelve-sensor probe, is shown to measure the velocity gradient components successfully. In both algorithms, the unknowns (velocity and velocity gradient components) are obtained by solving the resulting systems of nonlinear algebraic equations in a least-squares sense. The performances of the probes and the algorithms are tested with measurements in the wake of a circular cylinder. The statistics and spectra show that the twelve-sensor probe is successful in the simultaneous measurement of all three components of the velocity and all three components of the vorticity vectors.

    Notes: Abstract  This paper examines velocity averaging within Spark-Ignition (SI) engines, a non-stationary system. Comparison is made between the mean and turbulence velocities found from (a) Ensemble, (b) Cyclic and (c) Wavelet-based averaging. The various methods of extracting turbulence within this flow system result in qualitatively similar average velocities; however, there are significant differences in the turbulence velocities and spectral content of the flow field based on the definition used. The differing interpretation of turbulence results in a subjectivity to the physical understanding of the flows. The experience in extracting coherent structures in stationary turbulence suggests that wavelet analysis offers a unique insight that has applicability for engine studies.
