Summary The surface potentials of the systemsn-octadecanol/0,1 M NaCl,n-octadecanoic acid/0,01 M HCl, and sodiumn-octadecyl sulfate/0,1 M NaCl have been determined for compression and dilatation of the monolayer. Strong fluctuations of the surface potential caused by inhomogeneities in the monolayer have been observed forn-octadecanol in the range of 28–170 Å2/molecule and forn-octadecanoic acid in the range of 38–190 Å2/molecule. New insights into the dynamic behaviour of the monolayer of these systems have been obtained by an evaluation method taking into consideration only the experimental peak values in these ranges. The differences between theΔV-A-curves at dilatation and compression in the range of strongΔV-fluctuations may be reasonably well interpreted by the concentration profile self-adjusting at the respective dynamic conditions. The compression and dilatation curves of the sodium octadecyl sulfate monolayers having extensively homogeneous structure owing to the strong electrostatic repulsion between the ionic groups are identical in the whole investigated range of 20–150 Å2/molecule.
Notes:
