Notes: Abstract: The use of radioactive ion beams is shown to offer the possibility to study collective pairing states at high excitation energy, which are not usually accessible with stable projectiles because of large energy mismatch. In the case of two-neutron stripping reactions induced by 6He, we predict a population of the giant pairing vibration in 208Pb or 116Sn with cross-sections of the order of a millibarn, dominating over the mismatched transition to the ground state.

Notes: Abstract The12C(6Li,d)16O reaction at 28 MeV and 34 MeV bombarding energy are analized in Zero Range Distorted Wave Born Approximation (ZR-DWBA) utilizing microscopic four-particle transfer form factors. Configuration mixing is taken into account utilizing the Zuker, Buck and McGrory wave functions for16O. Good agreement is found for the angular distributions. For the relative cross sections to the different excited states, acceptable agreement is found for the 1− state (7.12 MeV) and 4+ (10.56 MeV), while the model clearly underestimates the transition to the 2+ state (6.92 MeV).

Notes: Abstract: The 9Be +209Bi fusion cross sections were measured in the 36.0 MeV ≤ Elab≤ 50.0 MeV range, down to 0.6 mb, with high accuracy via in-beam detection of the ground state α-decay of the evaporation residues produced. The elastic scattering cross sections around 150° and 135° were also obtained with moderate angular resolution. The cross sections below the barrier are reproduced by coupled channel calculations which include only one break-up channel with a moderate strength and a phenomenological renormalization of the potential depth. These simple calculations overestimate the cross sections above the barrier most likely due to the fact that the 9Be break-up process becomes much stronger. The barrier distributions extracted do not have evident break-up signature since they show one-barrier structure.

Notes: Abstract The validity of the eikonal approximation in heavy-ion reactions is systematically investigated for both potential scattering and coupled-channel processes. Simple prescriptions are advanced to account for Coulomb and nuclear distortions of the trajectory within the eikonal description. The strong nuclear absorption characterizing heavy-ion collision favours the extension of the limit of validity of the eikonal approximation to larger angles and to lower energies than probably expected, i.e. of the order of 30–40 MeV per nucleon in the case of elastic scattering or inelastic processes with very low excitation energies. In the case of inelastic excitation to highlying modes, and in particular at the lowest bombarding energies, the agreement between the eikonal predictions and the exact ones is worsened by the finiteQ-values, but not invalidated if proper corrections for the momentum mismatch are accounted for. A similar argument also applies to the strong-coupling situations, where the discrepancies are amplified by the multistep nature of the process.

Notes: Abstract: The (p,α) reaction on 90Zr has been studied in a high resolution experiment at an incident proton energy of 22 MeV. The cross section and asymmetry angular distributions for transitions to 36 levels of 87Y with an excitation energy up to 3 MeV have been measured. DWBA analyses of experimental angular distributions, using either Woods-Saxon or Double Folded potentials for the exit channel, have been done, allowing either the confirmation of previous spin and parity values or the assignment of new spin and parity to a large number of states. The structure of low lying states of 87Y has been studied in the framework of the shell model, using the OXBASH code. With the interaction PMM90 reasonable agreement is obtained for part of the negative parity spectrum.

Notes: Abstract The relation between resonances andK-matrix poles for the potential scattering problem is investigated. The analysis is carried out in two stages. We first discuss the analytic properties of aK-matrix related to a model phase-shift which embodies the relevant features of a potential scattering resonance; we then consider the specific case of a square-well potential. The result emerging from the analysis is that to each resonance two poles of theK-matrix are associated; they appear either as a real resonance-echo pair or as a complex conjugate doublet, according to the value of a suitable background parameter. The relevance of this result in connection with the Huby theory is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract We study pairing correlations in deformed nuclei in the framework of the Nilsson+BCS theory. As in the spherical case, the pairing interaction is found to induce strong spacial correlations between the partners of each paired couple. The presence of the deformed mean field gives rise to a non-spherical pair field, whose deformation is governed by the properties of a few single-particle orbitals around the Fermi surface and does not necessarily follow the shape of the mean field. Multipole expansion of the pair field yields all the pair densities associated with the direct two-particle transfer processes to the members of the g.s. rotational band in the A+2 system. The interplay of the deformations of the mean and the pair fields can lead to different relative magnitudes and phases of these densities and therefore to different excitation patterns of the rotational bands in two-particle transfer reactions. In the case of non-collective twoquasiparticles and bands the associated pair densities display large components with high multipoles and the associated transfer processes may be favoured in heavy-ion collisions by kinematical conditions. Examples corresponding to both prolate and oblate cases are considered.

Notes: Abstract We study the symmetric fragmentation of ionized alkali clusters within a liquid-drop type model. The interplay of surface and Coulomb interactions leads to a stability condition against small deformations which depends on the ratioZ 2/N. For systems which are stable against small-amplitude oscillations we consider the possibility of large-amplitude modes eventually leading to fission and give in terms of the same quantity an estimate of the potential barrier for this fission channel.

Notes: Abstract The limits of stability of small atomic clusters with angular momentum are investigated as a function of the size and charge of the aggregates. Critical angular momenta are obtained in a di-cluster picture from the balance of a cohesive surface-surface interaction and the disruptive centrifugal and electric interactions. The calculation scheme incorporates the mass and charge asymmetry degrees of freedom and it is thus particularly suited to explore cluster-cluster reaction processes. Deformation of the fragments is taken into account.
