Notes: Summary. We propose a cascadic multigrid algorithm for a semilinear elliptic problem. The nonlinear equations arising from linear finite element discretizations are solved by Newton's method. Given an approximate solution on the coarsest grid on each finer grid we perform exactly one Newton step taking the approximate solution from the previous grid as initial guess. The Newton systems are solved iteratively by an appropriate smoothing method. We prove that the algorithm yields an approximate solution within the discretization error on the finest grid provided that the start approximation is sufficiently accurate and that the initial grid size is sufficiently small. Moreover, we show that the method has multigrid complexity.

Notes: Abstract We propose a cascadic multigrid algorithm for a semilinear indefinite elliptic problem. We use a standard finite element discretization with piecewise linear finite elements. The arising nonlinear equations are solved by a cascadic organization of Newton's method with frozen derivative on a sequence of nested grids. This gives a simple version of a multigrid method without projections on coarser grids. The cascadic multigrid algorithm starts on a comparatively coarse grid where the number of unknowns is small enough to obtain an approximate solution within sufficiently high precision without substantial computational effort. On each finer grid we perform exactly one Newton step taking the approximate solution from the coarsest grid as initial guess. The linear Newton systems are solved iteratively by a Jacobi-type iteration with special parameters using the approximate solution from the previous grid as initial guess. We prove that for a sufficiently fine initial grid and for a sufficiently good start approximation the algorithm yields an approximate solution within the discretization error on the finest grid and that the method has multigrid complexity with logarithmic multiplier.

Notes: Abstract All caterpillars possess a pair of maxillary palps that “drum” the surface of foods during feeding. These chemosensory organs contain over 65% of a caterpillar's taste receptor cells, but their functional significance remains largely unknown. We examined their role in rejection of plant allelochemicals, using the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) as a model insect and an extract from a plant species (Grindeliaglutinosa) as a model stimulus. We selected this system because hornworms reject foods containing Grindelia extract, and because preliminary studies indicated that their maxillary palps respond to this extract. We hypothesized that Grindelia extract elicits rejection through stimulating: (1) olfactory receptor cells, (2) taste receptor cells, (3) oral mechanoreceptors, and/or (4) a postingestive response mechanism. Our results were consistent only with hypothesis 2: caterpillars approached Grindelia-treated diets without apparent hesitation, but rejected it within 6 s of initiating biting; Grindelia-treated solutions stimulated taste receptor cells in the maxillary palp, but not the other gustatory chemosensilla; and ablating the maxillary palps eliminated rejection of Grindelia-treated diets. Our results demonstrate that taste receptor cells in the maxillary palps mediate rejection of Grindelia extract, and provide the first direct evidence for a role of maxillary palps in rejection of plant allelochemicals.

Notes: Abstract  The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated in a multicentury integration conducted with the coupled general circulation model (CGCM) ECHAM3/LSG. The quasiperiodic interannual oscillations of the simulated equatorial Pacific climate system are due to subsurface temperature anomaly propagation and a positive atmosphere-ocean feedback. The gravest internal wave modes contribute to the generation of these anomalies. The simulated ENSO has a characteristic period of 5–8 years. Due to the coarse resolution of the ocean model the ENSO amplitude is underestimated by a factor of three as compared to observations. The model ENSO is associated with the typical atmospheric teleconnection patterns. Using wavelet statistics two characteristic interdecadal modulations of the ENSO variance are identified. The origins of a 22 and 35 y ENSO modulation as well as the characteristic ENSO response to greenhouse warming simulated by our model are discussed.

Notes: Abstract High resolution two-photon spectroscopy was applied to investigate isotope shifts of Ssns S0 Rydberg states of natural strontium in the range 10 ≤ n ≤ 70. While the isotope shifts between the even isotopes 84, 86, and 88 showed no change, a dramatic increase of the shift with increasing principal quantum number was found for the odd isotope Sr-87.
