    Notes: Abstract A Green's function calculation of the far-field radiation patterns of EMATs is presented. The approach is based on (a) closed form expressions for the eddy current and static magnetic field distributions, established by the EMATs, which react to produce the driving Lorentz forces, and (b) a Green's function derived from the steepest descent approximation to the far-field response of an arbitrary surface point force on a half space. Numerical results are presented, illustrating the radiation patterns of the three common EMAT designs. Included are vertically polarized shear waves as radiated by both meander coil and periodic magnet EMATs and horizontally polarized shear waves as radiated by the latter.

    Notes: Abstract A model is presented which relates the absolute backscattered noise level observed in an ultrasonic immersion inspection to details of the measurement system and properties of the metal specimen under study. The model assumes that the backscattered noise signal observed for a given transducer position is an incoherent superposition of echoes from many grains. The model applies to normal-incidence, pulse-echo inspections of weakly-scattering materials using toneburst pulses from either a planar or focused transducer. The model can be used in two distinct ways. Measured noise echoes can be analyzed to deduce a “Figure-of-Merit” (FOM) which is a property of the specimen alone, and which parameterizes the contribution of the microstructure to the observed noise. If the FOM is known, the model can be used to predict the absolute noise levels that would be observed under various inspection scenarios. Tests of the model are reported, using both synthetic noise echoes, and measured noise echoes from metal specimens having simple and complicated microstructures.

    Notes: Abstract A fully automatic, ultrasonic instrument to measure texture and formability parameters on metal sheet is described. Arrays of EMAT transducers are used to transmit and receiveS o Lamb waves propagating at 0°, 45°, and 90° with respect to the rolling direction. By analyzing the frequency dependence of the phase of the received signals, the long wavelength limit of the velocities is obtained. Included is a discussion of this algorithm, and subsequent processing steps to predict the ODC'sW 400,W 420, andW 440. On steel, the prediction of drawability parametersr and Δr based on a correlation developed previously by Mould and Johnson is also discussed. Results of blind field trials at facilities of three suppliers/users of steel sheet for automotive applications and one supplier of aluminum sheet for beverage can production are reported. The former confirmed the Mould-Johnson correlation for lowr material but indicated that refinements are needed for modern steels with highr. The aluminum data suggest a correlation between W440 and the degree of four-fold earing.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, predictions of two models for the propagation of ultrasonic beams through a two-dimensional, bimetallic weld geometry are compared. The finite element method can predict beam propagation through quite general geometry with high accuracy. This model, however, requires significant computational time. On the other hand, the approximate Gauss-Hermite model offers considerably greater computational speed, but has lower accuracy in certain regions and cannot treat the most general geometries and inhomogeneities in material properties. This paper compares the performances of the two models for the case of the two-dimensional, bimetallic weld consisting of multiple layers, some of which have anisotropic properties. It is found that the results of the two models are in good agreement in the vicinity of the central ray, and that the deviation increases as one moves away from the axis. Also, as the beam propagates through multiple interfaces, the accuracy of the Gauss-Hermite solution decreases.

    Notes: Abstract Model specimens are prepared, each of which may be viewed as two sections of similar material joined imperfectly at a planar interface. Measurements of the ultrasonic reflection from, mode conversion at, and/or transmission through these imperfect interfaces, are reported. The interface structures include distributions of pores, contacts, and inclusions. Included are both near-periodic and random cases. As the frequency is increased, the measured reflection coefficients generally show an initially linear increase from zero, followed by a maximum which may exhibit multiple peaks, and a subsequent decay. These results are interpreted in terms of a quasi-static model and an independent scattering model for ultrasonic interactions with imperfect interfaces.

    Notes: Abstract A scalar theory of the propagation of Gaussian ultrasonic beams through lenses and interfaces is presented. For radiation into a fluid, the Fresnel approximation is employed to derive the laws of propagation of Guassian beams (previously employed in the analysis of coherent optical systems). These are then generalized to situations commonly found in nondestructive evaluation by treating the effects of propagation through lenses and through curved interfaces at oblique incidence. A numerical example illustrates the ease with which insight into diffraction phenomena for complex geometries can be gained by this approach. The limitations imposed on the theory by aberrations and the scalar assumption are discussed, and the relationship of the Gaussian theory to the radiation of piston transducers is explored.

    Notes: Abstract The partial contact of two rough fatigue crack surfaces leads to transmission, reflection, diffraction, and mode conversion of an acoustic signal at those contacts. This paper reviews recent experimental and theoretical efforts to understand and quantify such contact on actual fatigue cracks in greater detail. It is shown that the size and density of individual contacts, or asperities, can be estimated from acoustic measurements. Furthermore, it is shown that this information is useful to provide the static stress across a partially closed crack as well as the “effective” stress intensity range which activates fatigue crack propagation.

    Notes: Abstract This paper summarizes advances in ultrasonic and magnetic technologies for materials characterization that have recently occurred in the research laboratory and appear to have the potential to impact technology gaps of concern to the energy production industry. Included are discussions of the possibilities that one can characterize structure, such as grain size and dislocations, properties, such as fracture toughness, degradation mechanisms, such as creep, fatigue, and hydrogen attack, as well as the stresses which drive many of the degradation mechanisms. Throughout the discussions, careful attention is given to differentiating those quantities which are fundamentally related to the nondestructive evaluation response, and those which are related by empirical correlations. Included is a discussion of future work needed to further develop these technologies.

    Notes: Abstract Quantitative reconstruction of volumetric flaws near a surface of an elastic solid has been carried out experimentally by analyzing the scattered ultrasonic waves. The inverse Born approximation (developed for flaws in bulk materials) was tested for the first time in the determination of the size, shape, and orientation of near-surface flaws. We have studied spherical solid inclusions at various depths below the surface. In addition we examined an approximately 2:1 prolate spheroidal inclusion which was located one major axis below the surface. The determination of the flaw's size, shape, and orientation in terms of an equivalent ellipsoid is realized by performing nonlinear least-squares iteration of the one-dimensional Born inversion results obtained at various scattering directions within a finite aperture. The reconstruction is in good agreement with the actual parameters of the flaw.
