Notes: Abstract  A recent survey of TALE superclass homeobox genes revealed a new domain upstream of the homeodomain that is conserved between the plant KNOX genes and the animal MEIS genes. At the same time, another paper identified the Drosophila gene homothorax (hth) as a homologue of the vertebrate MEIS genes, which prompted a reexamination of the sequences of the MEIS, KNOX (collectively named MEINOX) and PBC domains. Similarity of the complete MEINOX domain was found within the PBC domain. This suggests that the PBC class genes were also derived from the ancient MEINOX genes. Recently, it has been shown that the MEIS genes can interact with the Abd-B genes, whilst previous results have shown that the PBC genes interact with anterior Hox genes. This leads to the hypothesis that the duplication of an ancestral MEINOX gene into the PBC and MEIS genes happened at a point in time when the first two Hox cluster genes, an anterior one and a posterior one, emerged, and that subsequently these gene classes coevolved.

Notes: Summary: Dietary habits of the Puerto Rican blindsnake Typhlops platycephalus were studied by analysis of gastrointestinal tract contents and scats. Ant species (the principal prey taxon) were surveyed concurrently with the collection of the blindsnakes to determine what proportion of the species were used as prey. Typhlops platycephalus fed on 14 of 30 ant species found in the field and on two additional ant species that we did not find in the field. Individual snakes often feed on more than one prey species. Adult ants were most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and scats, although brood were occasionally encountered. However, laboratory feeding observations suggest that ant brood is more attractive to the snakes. Other prey taxa consumed included termites, mites, and sciarid fly larvae.

Notes: Abstract —Seismic data processing mostly takes into account the statistics inherent in the data to improve the data quality. Since some years the deterministic approach for processing shows many advantages. This approach takes into account e.g., the source signature, with the knowledge of its amplitude and phase behavior. The transformation of the signal into an optimized form is called wavelet processing. By this step an optimal input for deconvolution can be produced, which needs a minimum- delay signal to function well. The interpreter needs a signal which gives the optimum resolution, which is accomplished by the zero-phase transformation of the input signal. The combination of different input sources such as Vibroseis and Dynamite requires a phase adoption. All these procedures can be implemented via Two-Sided-Recursive (TSR-) filters. Spectral balancing can be accomplished very effectively in time domain after a minimum delay transform of the input signals. The DEKORP data suffer from a low signal/noise ratio, so that special methods for the suppression of coherent noise trains were developed. This can be done by subtractive coherency filtering. Multiple seismic reflections also can be suppressed by this method very effectively. All processing procedures developed during recent years are now fully integrated in commercial software operated by the processing center in Clausthal.

Notes: Summary Experimental games typically involve subjects playing the same game a number of times. In the absence of perfect rationality by all players, the subjects may use the behavior of their opponents in early rounds to learn about the extent of irrationality in the population they face. This makes the problem of finding the Bayes-Nash equilibrium of the experimental game much more complicated than finding the game-theoretic solution to the ideal game without irrationality. We propose and implement a computationally intensive algorithm for finding the equilibria of complicated games with irrationality via the minimization of an appropriate multi-variate function. We propose two hypotheses about how agents learn when playing experimental games. The first posits that they tend to learn about each opponent as they play it repeatedly, but do not learn about the population parameters through their observations of random opponents (myopic learning). The second posits that both types of learning take place (sequential learning). We introduce a computationally intensive sequential procedure to decide on the informational value of conducting additional experiments. With the help of that procedure, we decided after 12 experiments that our original model of irrationality was unsatisfactory for the purpose of discriminating between our two hypotheses. We changed our models, allowing for two different types of irrationality, reanalyzed the old data, and conducted 7 more experiments. The new model successfully discriminated between our two hypotheses about learning. After only 7 more experiments, our approximately optimal stopping rule led us to stop sampling and accept the model where both types of learning occur.

Notes: Abstract Eighty surface sediment samples taken in 1978 from Lake Geneva, together with two cores sampled in 1976 and 1980, and 30 samples (1978) from the Rhone River were analyzed for organochlorine compounds. DDT, its metabolites (DDE, TDE), HCB, and PCB were found. No other organochlorine compound was identified at the detection level of 0.5 ppb. DDT metabolites were widespread and indicated residual DDT sources in the Rhone watershed and other minor lake tributaries, particularly on the Swiss coast. DDT levels have declined since an apparent peak usage in 1957. HCB was found in almost all samples. It first appeared about 1962 with consistent usage to the present. Use is widespread with the major source being the Rhône River. PCB was found in all samples at levels comparable to levels in the North American Great Lakes. Sources appear to be diffuse urban/industrial, with major inputs on the Swiss shore between Vevey and Morges. Peak use of PCB occurred in 1972 and was followed by a decline to 1978, with some evidence for a second increase to 1980, the latest sample available. Both HCB and PCB were found at high levels in the most upstream samples of the Rhône River which may be indicative of substantial atmospheric loadings of these two compounds to the Lake Geneva Basin.

Notes: Abstract Nitrate reductase (NR) activity appeared in ammoniumgrown cultures of 5 species of marine algae, representing 4 classes, after a short period of nitrogen starvation. In nitrogen-limited chemostat cultures of Nannochloropsis oculata and Chlorella stigmatophora there was an inhibition of photosynthetic carbon fixation during nitrate assimilation. In these organisms, nitrate assimilation was light-dependent and inhibited by 3-(3′,4′-dichloro-)-1-1-dimethyl urea (DCMU). In N. oculata, an obligate autotroph, nitrite assimilation was dependent on light absolutely. Physiological changes that occur in these organisms during nitrogen deficiency enable them to assimilate nitrogen rapidly when it becomes available.

Notes: Abstract Observations were made on the brooding behavior of 10 laboratory reared female Octopus joubini, including egg laying, care of the eggs, feeding during brooding, and survival of the female from the onset of egg laying. Data concerning the numbers of eggs laid by each female and hatching (duration, frequency, correlation of duration to water temperature, etc.) are given. The newly hatched octopuses (whose ages were determined within 24 h) were fed Uca spp. to determine their growth rate from hatching to 4 months of age. In addition, some specimens were presented with a variety of foods that were easily accessible in the laboratory or field in an effort to find a food suitable for mass culture.
