Notes: Abstract We present an efficient technique for parallel manipulation of data structures that avoids memory access conflicts. That is, this technique works on the Exclusive Read/Exclusive Write (EREW) model of computation, which is the weakest shared memory, MIMD machine model. It is used in a new parallel radix sort algorithm that is optimal for keys whose values are over a small range. Using the radix sort and known results for parallel prefix on linked lists, we develop parallel algorithms that efficiently solve various computations on trees and “unicycular graphs.” Finally, we develop parallel algorithms for connected components, spanning trees, minimum spanning trees, and other graph problems. All of the graph algorithms achieve linear speedup for all but the sparsest graphs.

Notes: Abstract The problem of minimizing the depth of formulas by equivalence preserving transformations is formalized in a general algebraic setting. For a particular algebraic system ∑0 specific methods of a dynamic programming nature are developed for proving lower bounds on depth. Such lower bounds for ∑0 automatically imply the same results for the systems of (i) arithmetic computations with addition and multiplication only, and (ii) computations over finite languages using union and concatenation. The specific lower bounds obtained are (i) depth 2n−o(n) for the permanent, (ii) depth (0.25+o(1))log2 n for the symmetric polynomials and (iii) depth 1.16logn for a problem of formula sizen.

Notes: Summary The gibberellin content of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) roots and green organs from (2-chloroethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CCC)-treated seeds was equal to or even higher than in the water controls. The main difference between control and growth retardant-treated seedlings was expressed in the differential distribution of the endogenous gibberellin between its free and bound forms.

Notes: Summary An extraction method was developed to examine if enzymatic reaction of carbonic anhydrase in pecan (Carya illinoensis (Wang.) K Koch) leaves can replace the ordinary mineral detection tests. By comparing the extracted carbonic anhydrase activity from pecan leaves with lack of zinc and with recommended zinc level, the differences can be easily observed and used for detection of zinc deficiency.

Notes: Abstract The sex pheromone glands ofPlusia chalcites release, dodecyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, 11-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-8-tridecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate. A combination of capillary GC, GC-MS, and dimethyl disulfide derivatization enabled a rigorous identification of all these compounds, some of which were previously found in gland extracts. Bioassays in a flight tunnel showed that a ternary blend of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate elicited directed flights from 85 to 100% of the males tested and elicited copulation attempts, at the end of the flights, from 44 to 74% of the males tested. This blend was equal in activity to the natural gland extract. Addition of the other acetates had only a slight influence on the activity of this mixture. Substitution of either (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate or (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate in this blend by 11-dodecenyl acetate gave two ternary mixtures which also elicited high levels of courtship activity, almost as high as that of the original blend. Addition of (Z)-7-dodecenyl alcohol inhibited almost totally the flight activity of males.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider a way computer simulations can be used to address the problem of teaching for conceptual change and understanding. After identifying three levels of understanding of a natural phenomenon (concrete, conceptual, and metaconceptual) that need to be addressed in school science, and classifying computer model systems and simulations more generally in terms of the design choices facing the programmer, we argue that there are ways to design computer simulations that can make them more powerful than laboratory models. In particular, computer simulations that provide an explicit representation for a set of interrelated concepts allow students to perceive what cannot be directly observed in laboratory experiments: representations for the concepts and ideas used for interpreting the experiment. Further, by embedding the relevant physical laws directly into the program code, these simulations allow for genuine discoveries. We describe how we applied these ideas in developing a computer simulation for a particular set of purposes: to help students grasp the distinction between mass and density and to understand the phenomenon of flotation in terms of these concepts. Finally, we reflect on the kinds of activities such conceptually enhanced simulations allow that may be important in bringing about the desired conceptual change.
