Description / Table of Contents: Contents This paper deals with inverse operators for boundary-value problems in Electromagnetics. For curlfree fields the Dirichlet-, Neumann-, Newton- and Free Space problem, and for divergence-free fields, the Dirichlet-and Free Space problems are considered. For the different classes of boundary-value problems inverse operators are derived, i.e. the domain of definition and the mapping is defined.

Notes: Summary In the presence of calmodulin and phosphate and an ATP-regenerating system, Triton-treated ‘skinned fibers’ of theTaenia coli could be made to contract and relax by step changes of Ca++ within about 30 sec. In the absence of phosphate, relaxation was slower, and during this slow relaxation tension was not maintained actively. The passive tension could be abolished by phosphate (3–6 mM). Phosphate had little effect on contractile tension but decreased the speed of contraction.

Notes: Summary Adsorption isotherms of water on human red cell membranes have been measured and the results used to determine the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller monolayer coverage, saturation hydration, and relevant heats and entropies of hydration. The tightly bound monolayer corresponds to a complete covering of only one membrane surface and the saturation hydration is greater than values for globular proteins and phospholipids. A hysteresis loop is observed in the adsorption-desorption cycle. Circular dichroism spectra of membrane films have been measured as a function of hydration in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. The spectra resemble those of membrane suspensions with reduced scattering. The circular dichroism did not change upon dehydration of the membrane films from 92 to 0% relative humidities, implying a stable membrane protein structure independent of both water content and lipid phase.

Notes: Abstract The HLA-linked “SB” antigens comprise a new segregant series of B-cell alloantigens mapping between HLA-DR and glyoxylase. They can be detected by secondary proliferative responses of lymphocytes primed against HLA-A, B, C, DR, MB- and MT-compatible stimulators. To assess genetic complexity of the SB-gene region, alloreactive cloned T-cell lines were derived from four reagents detecting specificities designated SB2 and SB3. In two families, products detected by seven different clones segregated with the HLA haplotypes bearing the SB2 or SB3 specificities as recognized by the uncloned reagents. There were no indications that the cloned cells differed from the oligoclonal reagents in their fine specificity. In contrast to previous results with an S134-associated specificity, in population studies of 25 S132-positive and 23 SB3-positive donors, no evidence could be found for subtypes of either specificity. Thus, even at the level of recognition by cloned T-cells, both S132 and SB3 appear to be remarkably homogeneous in the population.

Notes: Abstract We recently reported the extension of CO laser operation to a variety of single-line transitions in the fundamental band (v=1 → 0). Now saturation stabilization of these lines could be achieved using an intracavity absorption cell with CO at low pressure. A 3f-detection technique allowed reliable frequency locking on transitions from P(8) to P(14). A frequency stability of better than 10kHz was indicated. The frequency of the P(14) transition was measured in a heterodyne experiment to be 62, 546, 358.324 (50) MHz.

Notes: Abstract We report the recent progress in the performance of the CO-overtone Δv=2 laser. We were able to increase both the number of lines and the output power by a significant amount. This laser is now a reliable source for spectroscopic applications in the spectral region from 2500–3800 cm−1. The typical parameters of the laser plasma and a table with the observed laser transitions and their frequencies are given.

Notes: Summary To evaluate the effects of long-term treatment antihypertensive with the dihydropyridine calcium antagonist amlodipine on insulin sensitivity, plasma insulin, and lipoprotein metabolism in obese hypertensive patients. We measured the insulin sensitivity index (SI), determined by the Minimal Model Method of Bergman, fasting plasma insulin and glucose concentrations, serum total triglyceride and lipoprotein cholesterol fractions, and blood pressure in 20 obese, non-diabetic patients with essential hypertension before and after 6 weeks of placebo and again after 6 months of amlodipine. Ten patients [mean body mass index (BMI) 30.2 kg·m−2] had been on prior treatment with a thiazide diuretic in low dosage and/or a β-adrenoceptor blocker (group A), and 10 matched patients [BMI 31.8 kg·m−2] had been previously untreated (group B). Amlodipine was started in a dose of 5 mg and was increased to 10 mg once daily in 14 patients who were hypertensive after 8 weeks on the lower dosage. At entry (before placebo), SI was slightly but not significantly lower in group A than B [2.7 vs. 3.6×10−4 ml·μU−4·min−1]; fasting plasma insulin was 13.6 vs. 12.9 μU·ml−1. After 6 weeks on placebo, SI averaged 3.7 in group A and 4.4×10−4 μU·ml−1·min−1 in group B; fasting plasma insulin was 14.6 vs. 15.1 μU·ml−1, and glucose 5.5 vs. 5.5 mmol·l−1. After 6 months on amlodipine there were no differences in SI [group A vs. group B, 5.2 vs. 3.8×10−4 ml·μU−1·min−1], fasting insulin [13.0 vs. 12.7 μU·ml−1], glucose [5.4 vs. 5.5 mmol·l−1], serum total triglycerides, and cholesterol or lipoprotein cholesterol fractions. Compared with placebo, amlodipine significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Heart rate, body weight, and 24 h urinary sodium excretion were unaltered. Long-term treatment with amlodipine does not affect insulin sensitivity, circulating insulin or glucose, or lipoprotein metabolism in obese, non-diabetic patients with essential hypertension.
