Notes: Abstract Finding Pareto-minimum vectors among r given vectors, each of dimension m, is a fundamental problem in multiobjective optimization problems or multiple-criteria decision-making problems. Corley and Moon (Ref. 1) have given an algorithm for finding all the Pareto-minimum paths of a multiobjective network optimization problem from the initial node to any other node. It uses another algorithm by Corley and Moon, which actually computes the Pareto-minimum vectors. We observed that the latter algorithm is incorrect. In this note, we correct the algorithm for computing Pareto-minimum vectors and present a modified algorithm.

Notes: Summary Two new aromatic derivatives of 5, 12-dihydroxy-6, 7-epoxy-resiniferonol were isolated from the leaves and twigs ofThymelea hirsuta L. (fam. Thymelaeaceae). These compounds were assigned the structures 12-O-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-6, 7-epoxyresiniferonol-9, 13, 14-ortho benzoate 1 and 12-O-heptadecenoyl-5-hydroxy-6, 7,-epoxy-resiniferonol-9, 13, 14-ortho benzoate 2. Both compounds induced erythema of mouse ears in a dose of 0.1 μg per ear.

Notes: Abstract Investigations in animals have suggested that conjugation of paracetamol may be reduced in malaria. We have measured plasma concentrations and the urinary excretion of paracetamol and its phase II metabolites in eight Thai patients during uncomplicated falciparum malaria and in convalescence, following a 1000 mg single oral dose. The apparent oral clearance (Malaria, 3.6; Convalescence, 3.9; ml·min−1·kg−1), the elimination half-life (Malaria, 3.8; Convalescence, 3.7 h) and apparent volume of distribution (Malaria, 1.2; Convalescence, 1.2; l·kg−1) of paracetamol were similar during malaria and convalescence. In addition, the urinary excretion of paracetamol and its major phase II metabolites and their formation clearances from paracetamol were not significantly different between the two study phases. These data show that clinical malaria infection has no effect on the conjugation of paracetamol in man.

Notes: Abstract A new counting geometry with a simple sample changer was constructed to enable cyclic and pseudocyclic short-time activation analysis. With the new system it is possible to cycle a sample, or successively an indefinite number of samples up to 20 times. The sample changer acts at the same time as sample catcher for two n-type HPGe detectors and can release the sample into a well-type HPGe detector. The new system enables the simultaneous counting of the irradiated samples by means of two endcap HPGe detectors, and subsequent counting by means of the well HPGe detector or both detector types. A well detector ensures a high counting efficiency which improves the sensitivity of a large number of short lived nuclides. Some standard reference materials (i.e., BCR-176, NIST SRM 1633b, IAEA-336, 335b, 335c) were prepared and analysed in replicates. The results indicate that up to 46 nuclides can be determined in BCR-176 if the samples are irradiated with and without the6LiD converter. An automatic evaluation programme was developed that determines the FWHM calibration parameters for each spectrum for accurate peak-area estimation at high count rates.

Notes: The technology and applications of the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique have progressed significantly since the first DIAL measurements of Schotland [1], and airborne DIAL measurements of ozone and water vapor are frequently being made in a wide range of field experiments. In addition, plans are underway to develop DIAL systems for use on satellites for continuous global measurements. This paper will highlight the history of airborne lidar and DIAL systems, summarize the major accomplishments of the NASA Langley DIAL program, and discuss specifications and goals for DIAL systems in space.

Notes: Abstract The sample structure consists of two laterally spaced copper electrodes joined by a thin silicon monoxide film (type B). The forming effect in type B samples is compared with the forming effect in the conventional MIM sandwich structure (type A). In type A devices two extreme cases of forming are shown; one is the typical forming effect and the other is an initial highly conductive state, leading to a reduction in current and to a more normal electro-formed characteristic after a sudden change in current at a fairly high applied voltage. The important point in the two cases is that the ultimate formed characteristic is the same for both cases and is independent of the initialV-I characteristic. Type B samples exhibit the highly conductive state characteristic of type A samples after breakdown occurs. This breakdown behaviour is believed to be associated with the power lost in the sample. Similar voltage-controlled negative resistance (VCNR) is observed in type B samples to that of type A samples. The development of this VCNR and the effect of ambient pressure on this characteristic is explained. Microprobe analysis study of type B samples shows the diffusion of metal in the insulator, which may account for the electro-forming effect.
