Notes: Abstract The Saint Francis College chemistry club has been invigorated through the use of a service oriented outreach program, Rural Outreach Chemistry for Kids (R.O.C.K.). The R.O.C.K. program has been in operation for approximately two years and we have reached over 600 K–12 students through a number of outreach activities, both on and off campus. The focus of the R.O.C.K. program is to have the K–12 students actively involved in the presentation that are organized and run by the St. Francis College Chemistry Club members.

Notes: Abstract  Mining of massive sulfide deposits in southwestern Spain extending back to the Copper and Bronze Ages has resulted in the pollution of the Rio Tinto fluvial-estuarine complex, the site of Columbus' departure for the New World in 1492. Additional sources of potential pollution include the large industrial complex at Huelva near the lower portion of the estuary. Extensive analysis of surface sediment samples and cores has established that there are no geographic trends in the distribution of the pollutants, which include Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Ti, Ba, Cr, V and Co. These data have, however, demonstrated that tidal flux within the estuary carries phosphorus and perhaps other elements from the industrial complex at Huelva to the tidal limit of the system, several kilometers upstream from the discharge site. Radiometric analysis of short cores shows that sedimentation rates over at least the past couple of centuries have been about 0.3 cm/year. These data and that from a single deep core demonstrate that the estuary was polluted from mining activity long before the large-scale operations began in the late nineteenth century.

Notes: Summary PR-G-138-Cl, a new antihypertensive agent with vasodilating properties, was studied in ten patients with moderate to severe hypertension. The patients were admitted to a metabolic ward and followed on a 2 gm salt diet. Placebo was given daily until blood pressure and weight were stabilized. A dose titration was then started with increasing single daily doses of 3, 5, 8, and 10 mg of PR-G-138-Cl orally. The dose at which the mean arterial pressure was reduced by 15 mm Hg was continued for a total of seven days. PR-G-138-Cl lowered sitting mean arterial pressures significantly in all subjects (133.8±15.1 → 116.0±12.4 mm Hg, p〈0.001). The antihypertensive effect was first noted 30 minutes following drug administration and persisted for as long as six hours with a peak effect at one hour. All patients had a significant increase in sitting pulse rate (80.4±9.11 → 90.0 ±6.91/min, p〈0.002). Blood pressure reduction and increase in pulse rate were dose related. The most common side effects noted were headaches in eight out of ten patients and postural dizziness in seven out of ten patients. There were no signs of fluid retention (weight gain or edema). Electrocardiogram and other laboratory parameters remained essentially unchanged.

Notes: Summary Six normal young and six normal elderly volunteers and six elderly hypertensive patients took part in an acute and chronic dose study of a combination capsule containing atenolol (50 mg), hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg) and amiloride (2.5 mg) designed for the treatment of hypertension. No difference in any of the drug pharmacokinetic parameters could be detected between the hypertensives and the normal elderly subjects. The bio-availability and the 24-h blood concentrations of all three drugs, half-life of atenolol and amiloride and the peak concentration of hydrochlorothiazide was significantly greater in the elderly. The 24-h blood concentrations of atenolol and hydrochlorothiazide did not alter with chronic dosing, but amiloride concentrations were significantly higher at this time in all groups. A significant fall in the blood pressure was observed in the hypertensive group. Heart rate fell more in the normal and hypertensive elderly subjects than in the young. The combination has shown to be an effective and well tolerated antihypertensive in the elderly patient with a 24-h duration of action.

Notes: Summary Time-resolved photoluminescence experiments in a wide carrier density range up to and beyond the threshold for stimulated emission in ZnSe/ZnS x Se1−x superlattices are presented. Different localisation mechanisms of free excitons are identified giving rise to different radiative recombination channels. At high carrier density localised energy states merge into miniband that allows for exciton-exciton interaction, such as screening of the free-exciton absorption and inelastic exciton-exciton scattering.

Notes: Abstract CaLaBaCu3O7−y (CLBCO) is a high T c superconductor with unique tetragonal structure and cross-cationic substitution sites. In this paper, we present our study on the BaO—CuO—CLBCO phase diagram and its application to the crystal growth of CLBCO. The eutectic composition of BaO—CuO system is confirmed by the improved thermogravimetric analysis 〈ITGA〉 and is used for the crystal growth as a self-flux system. A pseudo-phase diagram of CLBCO—eutectic flux system is established by differential thermal analysis 〈DTA〉 which enables the selection of a suitable starting composition and temperature program for the crystal growth. We explore the relation between crystal growth, cell parameters and the main superconducting transition temperatures T c. The T c of CLBCO crystals depends strongly on the Ca/La ratio in the starting materials. As for YBa2Cu3O7−y 〈YBCO〉, a small amount of BaF2 additive greatly increases the main transition temperature of CLBCO crystals. This can be understood by the cluster model we proposed previously for YBCO crystal growth. Based on the research on the phase diagram, crystal growth and the superconductivity, high T c crystals of CLBCO with size up to 6.5 × 6.5 × 0.43 have been grown from the eutectic self-flux system with BaF2 as additive. T c was determined by an a.c. susceptibility measurement, which shows the main transition temperature up to 60 K for the as-grown crystals. After annealing in flowing oxygen at 600 to 400 °C for two days, T c increased to 73 K.

Notes: Abstract In this paper I consider how information is required to specify various systems. It is shown that the transitive information of any physical system, is distributed among three distinct components. One of these, the selective component, is required to specify the elemental parts of the system. Another, the connective component, is required to specify the macrostructure of the system; that is the way the parts are put together. And a third, the conformative component, is required to specify the intrinsic complexion or microstructure of the system. An interesting method for analyzing branched systems which takes account of connective ambiguity is described in some detail. The relationship between information and entropy, known as the Clausius-Shannon Identity, is then discussed with reference to selected thermodynamic models: and that aspect of information which is often overlooked, namely the distinction, between transitive and intransitive information is highlighted. The applications (or perhaps more correctly, the limitations of applying this treatment) to problems of biological interest are also indicated.
