Notes: Abstract Solid-state27Al and29Si NMR spectroscopy with magic angle spinning (MAS) of samples was used to study several 1.13 nm tobermorites, most of which were deliberately substituted with aluminium.27Al MASNMR clearly showed that aluminium is tetrahedrally co-ordinated in tobermorite structures. In addition two different aluminium environments resonating at ∼ 57 and 64 ppm from [Al(H2O)6]3+ were detected.29Si MASNMR of pure, anomalous tobermorites showed resonances at −85.7 and −95.7 ppm from tetramethylsilane representing chain middle groups (Q2) and branching sites (Q3), respectively. Anomalous Al-substituted tobermorites, on the other hand, showed two to four resonances representing different silicon environments. One Al-substituted tobermorite showed two resonances at −84.6 and −91.5 ppm which were assigned to Q2(0 Al) and Q3 (1 Al), respectively. In the above tobermorite aluminium appeared to have substituted into branching sites only. Two other Al-substituted tobermorites, however, showed four distinct resonances at ∼ −82.0, −85.2, −92.0 and −96.0 and these were assigned to Q2 (1 Al), Q2 (0 Al), Q3 (1 Al) and Q3 (0 Al), respectively. Thus these two tobermorites showed substitution of aluminium in the chain middle groups as well as branching sites. Another Al-substituted tobermorite which showed a normal thermal behaviour exhibited, as expected, only Q2(0 Al) and Q2 (1 Al) sites resonating at −84.7 and ∼ −80.2 ppm, respectively. No Q3 sites were detected because few or no branching sites are present in this normal tobermorite. The results reported here clearly demonstrate the usefulness of solid-state27Al and29Si MASNMR spectroscopy for the investigation of short-range order in alumino-silicate materials.

Notes: Abstract This paper is an attempt to improve on the approximation. First author citations (Cf)≈Total citations (Ct) of an author's publications without the work of making the complete citation count under the author and all co-author names. Using the bibliographies of all faculty from each of four large departments: Physics, Chemistry, Materials Sciences, and Biosciences, in the same university, both first author and complete citation counts were made, care being taken to avoid the most common errors in such counts. It is shown that the function Cf·T/F (where T and F are the total number of papers and F those with subject author's name first) correlates strongly (〉90%) with Ct. We find also that Ct correlates strongly with T. The data also may be used as one more line of evidence to obtain normalizing ratios for possible comparisons of productivityacross different disciplinary universes. A very tentative ratio from different studies would be 8 (Chem.)=4 (Physics)=2.5 (Mat. Sci.)=2 (Mathematics)=4.5 (Biophysics-Biochemistry).

Notes: Abstract  High-power ball mill activation of the mixture of hydrated zirconium and lanthanum salts (oxonitrates, oxochlorides) with ammonium phosphate followed by hydrothermal treatment at temperatures not exceeding 200°C and a nearly neutral pH was found to yield crystalline dispersed phase of a cubic NH4Zr2(PO4)3 type along with admixtures of disordered orthorhombic compounds of a zirconium orthophosphate type. In the same conditions and at the same Zr/P ratio, hydrothermal treatment of gels obtained by reacting mixed zirconium and lanthanum nitrates solutions with ammonium phosphates yields no crystalline products, and only treatment in acid media generates a phase of the α-ZrPO4(OH) type coexisting with the NH4Zr2(PO4)3 phase if polyethylene oxide is present. X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, 31MAS-NMR, FTIRS and thermal analysis were applied to elucidate factors affecting crystallization of complex zirconium phosphates in the hydrothermal conditions. The most essential factor appears to be generation of some nuclei of zirconium phosphates under high pressures developed in the course of mixed solids mechanical activation. These nuclei are embedded into matrix of such well-crystallized solid products as ammonium nitrate or chloride. Hence, metastable cubic or orthorhombic structure of the phases obtained via mechanical activation route can be assigned to the nuclei-matrix orientation relationship. Due to easily scaled-up synthesis procedure, these results appear to be very promising for manufacturing of dispersed framework zirconium phosphates as acid catalysts or fast proton conductors.
