    Notes: We argue that Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) installations are difficult to align to specific requirements of the enterprise because of the low level at which ERP functionality is described. We raise this level from a functional description to a goal-oriented one. We use SAP R/3 to illustrate this. A SAP goal expresses the task that a SAP function carries out and abstracts away from the performance of this task. Since a SAP goal can be achieved in many ways, we introduce the notion of SAP strategies. We organise goals and strategies as a directed graph called a map. We illustrate the map with the Materials Management Module of SAP. In order to evaluate and compare the use of the map with the functional approach, we develop an evaluation framework. The evaluation and comparison are presented. The materials management map is then used to align the SAP module to the stores and purchase department of an academic institute.

    Notes: Situatedness of development processes is a key issue in both the software engineering and the method engineering communities, as there is a strong felt need for process prescriptions to be adapted to the situation at hand. The assumption of the process modelling approach presented in this paper is that process prescriptions should be selected according to the actual situation at hand, i.e. dynamically in the course of the process. The paper focuses on a multi-model view of process modelling which supports this dynamicity. The approach builds on the notion of a labelled graph of intentions and strategies called a map as well as its associated guidelines. The map is a navigational structure which supports the dynamic selection of the intention to be achieved next and the appropriate strategy to achieve it, whereas guidelines help in the operationalisation of the selected intention. The paper presents the map and guidelines and exemplifies the approach using the CREWS-L’Ecritoire method for requirements engineering.

    Notes: Summary The specific activity of glutamine synthetase (GS) in mouse brain was 2-fold higher in the olfactory bulbs than in other regions. After birth, the specific activity of GS increased more rapidly in medulla oblongata and in olfactory bulbs, than in cerebral and cerebellar cortex. The activity of GS in primary cultures of brain hemispheres increased more slowly than in homogenates of whole brains. However, when astroblasts were treated in vitro with glucocorticoids or mouse brain extracts, GS activity reached 4 times the level measured in the homogenate of an adult mouse brain. We conclude that levels of GS activity may relate to the maturation of astrocytes, and propose that GS may be used as a marker of astrocytic maturation.

    Notes: Abstract The SEMAPHORE (Structure des Echanges Mer-Atmosphère, Propriétés des Hétérogénéités Océaniques: Recherche Expérimentale) experiment has been conducted from June to November 1993 in the Northeast Atlantic between the Azores and Madeira. It was centered on the study of the mesoscale ocean circulation and air-sea interactions. The experimental investigation was achieved at the mesoscale using moorings, floats, and ship hydrological survey, and at a smaller scale by one dedicated ship, two instrumented aircraft, and surface drifting buoys, for one and a half month in October-November (IOP: intense observing period). Observations from meteorological operational satellites as well as spaceborne microwave sensors were used in complement. The main studies undertaken concern the mesoscale ocean, the upper ocean, the atmospheric boundary layer, and the sea surface, and first results are presented for the various topics. From data analysis and model simulations, the main characteristics of the ocean circulation were deduced, showing the close relationship between the Azores front meander and the occurrence of Mediterranean water lenses (meddies), and the shift between the Azores current frontal signature at the surface and within the thermocline. Using drifting buoys and ship data in the upper ocean, the gap between the scales of the atmospheric forcing and the oceanic variability was made evident. A 2 °C decrease and a 40-m deepening of the mixed layer were measured within the IOP, associated with a heating loss of about 100 W m−2. This evolution was shown to be strongly connected to the occurrence of storms at the beginning and the end of October. Above the surface, turbulent measurements from ship and aircraft were analyzed across the surface thermal front, showing a 30% difference in heat fluxes between both sides during a 4-day period, and the respective contributions of the wind and the surface temperature were evaluated. The classical momentum flux bulk parameterization was found to fail in low wind and unstable conditions. Finally, the sea surface was investigated using airborne and satellite radars and wave buoys. A wave model, operationally used, was found to get better results compared with radar and wave-buoy measurements, when initialized using an improved wind field, obtained by assimilating satellite and buoy wind data in a meteorological model. A detailed analysis of a 2-day period showed that the swell component, propagating from a far source area, is underestimated in the wave model. A data base has been created, containing all experimental measurements. It will allow us to pursue the interpretation of observations and to test model simulations in the ocean, at the surface and in the atmospheric boundary layer, and to investigate the ocean-atmosphere coupling at the local and mesoscales.

    Notes: Abstract  Changes in radial growth of the four coniferous species growing in the French Alps near the upper treeline are investigated. Thirty-seven populations of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.) and mountain pine (Pinus uncinata Mill. ex Mirb.) were sampled by taking 1320 cores and analysing tree-ring widths. Sites were chosen in various climatic conditions (macroclimate and aspect) and on two kinds of bedrock in order to take into account the ecological behaviour of these species. Belledonne, Moyenne-Tarentaise, Haute-Maurienne and Briançonnais areas were sampled along increasing gradients of summer aridity and winter continentality. The calculation of time series after removing the age trend brings strong evidence for an increase in radial growth during the two last centuries, but with different stages and fluctuations for each species. This growth trend is significantly enhanced since 1860 for the spruce, and since 1920 for the two pine species. Furthermore, it also appears on Larix decidua with the same pattern despite periodical growth reduction due to attacks of the larch bud moth (Zeiraphera diniana Gn.). The analysis of ring-widths at a given cambial age reveals that this enhanced phenomenon is observed especially during the tree’s early years (25–75 years). The analysis of four regional climatic series, and three longer series of temperature (in farther single sites) reveals synchronous decadal fluctuations and an evident secular increase in minimum temperatures (especially in January and from July to October), that may be involved in tree-growth enhancement. Thermic amplitudes are significantly reduced during the whole growing period, what is more pronounced in Belledonne, the most oceanic region. Long term growth changes are well described by stepwise regression models, especially for the pine species. These models involved both a linear trend (CO2 concentration or N-deposition) and low frequency of Turin monthly temperatures. However, they show different patterns than those observed from response functions at a yearly scale.

    Notes: Abstract  The influence of biotic (tree species) and abiotic factors (regional climate, altitude and stand aspect) on extreme tree-ring widths is dendroecologically investigated. Negative pointer years are observed when abrupt radial growth reductions (exceeding 40%) occurred synchronously in a given tree population. Pointer year intensity is expected to follow several theoretical models when trees are sampled along ecological gradients in various site conditions. Hypotheses are made about expected patterns of pointer year spatial distribution. They are compared with observed results obtained with Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) sampled in two French Alpine valleys (Tarentaise and Maurienne) with different regional climates, on two aspects and three altitude levels. Results reveal that extreme years follow expected patterns well. Thus, clear site modulations are observed in 1956 and 1986 (only trees located in Maurienne reacted). Moreover, species differences are observed, with typical cases of single species sensitivity (for spruce, occurring in 1962 and 1992). Abiotic factors such as altitude and aspect also involve clear pointer year patterns, such as narrow rings in 1976 due to summer drought that occurred especially at lower altitudes. However, some observed extreme years sometimes appear to be a combination of two (or three) of these one-factor theoretical models (e.g. 1921 with both lower altitude level and only observed in Tarentaise; 1948 involving both higher altitude and northern slopes). These results demonstrate the consistency of various tree-ring and climate relationships along ecological gradients.

    Notes: Abstract Extended structural defects in both α-Hgl2 crystals grown in solution or from the vapour-phase were studied by optical microscopy, light scattering, SEM operated in cathodoluminescence and in secondary electron mode, X-ray topography, neutron, γ- and X-ray rocking curves and oscillating crystal X-ray diffraction. The observed dislocations were compared with theoretically calculated dislocations. Dislocation loops, having diameters ranging from 2 Μm to 500 Μm, are observed on all low index faces. Hohlstellen (lens-shaped voids) having axes along the [0 0 1] direction, less than 1 Μm in thickness, and diameters lying in the (001) planes, ranging from 2 Μm to 10 Μm are characteristic defects. Observed plastic deformations like glide sheets and bands, tilt and twist boundaries, kink and fatigue bands, ridges and rumplings were characterized. Growth rings, spherical void inclusions 10–30 Μm in diameter, orthogonal walls of forest screw dislocations parallel to 1 00 planes, and streaks (planar void sheets crossing the (001) planes) were only observed in crystals grown from the vapour-phase. Cross-penetration twins having (1 1 4) twin planes are described. The possible formation of stacking faults was analysed. The mosaicity of solution-grown crystals ranges from 1′ to 6′. A characteristic cellular structure, having a cell size ranging from 2 um to 10 Μm, was observed in all the crystals examined and correlated to local deviations from the stoichiometric composition. Solid lens-shaped inclusions, having diameters ranging from 3 Μm to 500 Μm and thicknesses ranging from 0.3 Μm to 50 Μm, respectively, are entrapped in many crystals and correlated to spiral hillocks observed on 001 growing faces.

    Notes: Abstract Conceptual modelling is situated in the broader view of information systems requirements engineering. Requirements Engineering (RE) explores the objectives of different stakeholders and the activities carried out by them to meet these objectives in order to derive purposeful system requirements and therefore lead to better quality systems, i.e., systems that meet the requirements of their users. Thus RE product models use concepts for modelling these instead of concepts like data, process, events, etc., used in conceptual models. Since the former are more stable than the latter, requirements engineering manages change better. The paper gives the rationale for extending traditional conceptual models and introduces some RE product models. Furthermore, in contrast to conceptual modelling, requirements engineering lays great stress on the engineering process employed. The paper introduces some RE process models and considers their effect on tool support.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of altered urinary pH on the excretion of single doses of orally administered tetracycline hydrochloride and doxycycline hyclate was studied in humans. Alkalinization of the urine significantly enhanced the cumulative renal excretion of both tetracycline and doxycycline as compared to acidic urine treatments. Altered tubular reabsorption was assumed to have caused this effect, since tetracyclines have been shown to be more lipid soluble at their isoelectric pH (approximately the pH of the acidic urine treatment) as compared to more alkaline pHs. The renal clearance of doxycycline was significantly increased by urinary alkalinization.
