    Notes: Abstract The influence of ion implantation on the magnetization of a model bubble system (La, Ga: YIG) is studied by means of Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (CEMS). It is found that the average magnetization decreases considerably with increasing depth, but after reaching a minimum returns to the bulk value. This observation is in accord with recent FMR and x-ray diffraction experiments.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Struktur desepi-Limonol-jodoacetates (C26H31O8) COCH2I, wurde durch dreidimensionale Röntgenanalyse bestimmt. Es gelang, die Lage sämtlicher Atome in zwei kristallographisch unabhängigen, jedoch chemisch identischen Molekeln zu ermitteln. Dieses Resultat stellt eine vollständige Bestimmung der Konstitution und der Stereochemie des Limonins dar.

    Notes: Abstract A study on the horizontally LPE-grown La, Ga: YIG films is presented. With the spin wave resonance technique the ratio of the saturation magnetizations of the bulk and transient layer has been measured. The average saturation magnetization was determined by means of a vibrating sample magnetometer and the Ga concentration by x-ray fluorescence analysis. These data are compared with the growth rates of both the transient and the bulk layer. A systematic dependence of the magnetization on the growth rate is found.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Nach einem Verfahren, das als “Methode der gefrorenen Wirbel” bezeichnet wird, werden ebene Strömungen durch einen Krümmer berechnet. Der Grundgedanke des Verfahrens besteht darin, die Wirbelstärke näherungsweise als eine Funktion der Stromfunktion allein anzusetzen. Man wird so auf eine Poisson-Gleichung für die Stromfunktion geführt. Die Rechnungen werden durchgeführt für Geschwindigkeitsverteilungen im Eintrittsquerschnitt, die der ausgebildeten laminaren und turbulenten Strömung entsprechen. Am Beispiel der Laminarströmung wird der Einfluss vorgegebener Wirbelverteilungen und Ausflussbedingungen auf die Strömung in den verschiedenen Bereichen des durchströmten Raumes untersucht. Bei den Berechnungen mit Geschwindigkeitsprofilen, die der turbulenten Strömung entsprechen, wurden zudem die Einflüsse der Krümmung und der Art der Zuströmung betrachtet, wobei der Krümmungsradius vom 0,75fachen bis zum 4fachen der Kanalbreite variiert wurde. Das Verhältnis des Mittelwertes der Geschwindigkeit im Eintrittsquerschnitt zur Geschwindigkeit in der Mitte dieses Querschnittes erweist sich dabei als ein hydrodynamisch charakteristischer Parameter, während die Annahmen über die Geschwindigkeitsverteilung am Austritt nur von geringfügigem Einfluss sind. Bei scharfer Krümmung und ungleichmässigen Geschwindigkeitsprofilen tritt Strömungsablösung an der Aussenwand auf. Ablösungserscheinungen an der Innenwand — die praktisch beobachtet werden — liefert diese Theorie nicht, womit die Grenzen ihrer Anwendbarkeit in Erscheinung treten.

    Notes: Abstract The magnetostriction constants of Y2.85La0.15Fe3.75Ga1.25O12 epilayers have been measured by observing the shift of the resonance line of a thin film which is stressed by three-point bending. The result is λ111=−(0.75±0.15) × 10−6 and λ100=−(0.4±0.1) × 10−6 which is in agreement with the measurements on bulk single crystals. This result indicates that there is no growth induced contribution to the magnetostriction in thin films of this garnet grown by liquid phase epitaxy.

    Notes: Abstract Single crystal thin films of Bi substituted iron garnets have been grown by the liquid phase epitaxy technique. The growth conditions and compositions are presented together with the segregation coefficients of Bi and Pb as a function of growth temperature. The Faraday rotation and optical absorption have been measured for wavelengths between 0.7 and 0.46 μm. The superior magneto-optic properties (Faraday rotations of up to ten times larger than that observed for Y3Fe5O12) make these epitaxial layers attractive for magneto-optic devices. The influence of Pb incorporation on the optical properties of the films is discussed. Compositions of Bi and Ga(Al) substituted Gd3Fe5O12, which exhibit a magnetic compensation temperature near room temperature and high Faraday rotation, have also been prepared. The magnetic switching behaviour as a function of temperature has been determined. It shows that these films are especially suited for thermomagnetic recording using an argon ion laser at a wavelength of 5145 Å.

    Notes: Abstract Two types of films for small bubbles have been grown without making use of the rare earth ions which are the cause of increased damping of the Bloch wall motion in the usual small bubble film compositions. Firstly, Bi-containing films were grown on (111) orientated GGG for 1 μm bubbles and secondly, Mn3+-containing films were grown under compression on (100) orientated GGG substrates for 0.4 μm bubbles. The damping constants in these films have been obtained by measuring the FMR line width. The correlation between the damping of the FMR and of the Bloch wall motion is determined in films with bubble diameters of, 2 to 4 μm. The damping constants are a factor 10 to 100 smaller than in the existing device films for small bubbles.

    Notes: Abstract The incorporation of impurities in films of Bi-substituted iron garnets grown by liquid phase epitaxy has been studied by successively adding small amounts of SiO2 and CaCO3 to the melt before film growth. It is found that very small additions of CaCO3 to the melt profoundly influences the optical absorption coefficient and the electrical properties. The impurity absorption ofn-type YIG doped with Si4+ and Pb2+ ions is investigated and its wavelength dependence compared to that ofp-type YIG. The optical transitions involved in the impurity absorption of iron garnets are discussed in terms of transition reaction, photon energy and dependence on the impurity concentration. Depending on the photon energy, one or several transitions may give rise to impurity absorption.

    Notes: Abstract Thulium iron garnet thin films substituted with bismuth and gallium were prepared by LPE from a PbO.B2O3 flux. Radioactive isotope tracers were added to the melt as the chemical analysis technique. The deviation from the ratio (Pb+Bi+Tm)/(Fe+Ga)=0.6 of the layers was large and a proportion of the thulium ions possibly lie on the octahedral crystallographic sites. The concentration of Bi, Pb, and Ga as a function of the growth temperature was studied. The magneto-optic properties show that the layers are well suited for use in a magneto-optic device. A figure of merit of 2.5 degree per decibel at λ=560 nm was obtained and some magnetic bubble parameters are also presented.
