Description / Table of Contents: Summary In order to investigate the relations between atmospheric electric phenomena in different altitudes and various meteorological processes, continuous automatical recordings of the statical atmospheric potential gradient have been performed in the alpine region since several years. — Two stations in the Allgäu Mountains:Oberstdorf (815 m) andNebelhorn (1930 m) and four stations in the Wetterstein Mountains:Garmisch-Partenkirchen (705 m),Eibsee (1000 m),Riffelriss (1640 m) andZugspitze (2963 m) serve to this purpose. — Using typical curves, we demonstrate the results of the study of the following problems: 1) Local effects at both valley stations and mountain stations, caused bya) various aerosols (dust, smoke, vapour, fog, etc.),b) winds, conditioned by orographical circumstances,c) foehn; 2) Synoptical problems of the atmospheric electricity:a) the behaviour of the atmospheric potential gradient both above and below inversions and superior limits of convection in order to study the status of the fundamental layer of the atmosphere («Grundschicht»,Schneider-Carius),b) the vertical variation of the electric charge in sheet clouds (polarisations of sheet clouds),c) the vertical variation of electric charge in shower and thunderstorm clouds in order to study their electric structure and chronologic development.d) vertical exchange of air masses,e) the behaviour of the atmospheric potential gra- dient during various forms of precipitation, especially if there is a change of the phase.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Besides our continuous synoptic records of the air-electric elements in the region of the Zugspitze (Wetterstein Mountains, Bavarian Alps) a measuring excursion has been undertaken to the «Zugspitzplatt» in order to clarify some special questions (August 1954). On this plateau, 2500 meters above sea level, readings of the potential gradient have been recorded with a transportable instrument and the polar conductivities of the air have been measured. Comparing exactly the readings recorded on the Zugspitze-Peak (Z, 2963 meters above sea level) with those recorded on the Zugspitzplatt (P) we could show that the values measured on the peak — in spite of the exposed situation of this station — have to be considered as representative and free from disturbing secondary phenomena. Our former observation that the accessory potential gradient during snow-fall has a positive sign, and during rain shows a negative one, has been confirmed. On days when convection prevails, the deviation of the diurnal variation of the potential gradient onP from the diurnal variation onZ indicates distinctly the elevation up to 2500 m, caused by the exchance, of nuclei and large ions. During fog lifted up from lower cloud levels (stratus, stratocumulus) potential gradient and polar conductivities on stationP show the same behaviour as in low altitudes. If stationP is reached by descending currents, the negative conductivity sometimes is clearly observed to rise separately. It has been noticed that on the base of a standing lenticular crest cloud there are free electric charges of negative sign, and on the upper surface, probably, positive ones. On the surface or fore part of these clouds a separate increase of the negative conductivity could be measured distinctly.

Notes: Summary Data from simultaneous measurements of RaB and RaC concentration in atmospheric aerosols, taken at sites located roughly 700 and 1800 m a.s.l., are used to elucidate the relation of the ratio of the specific activities of RaB and RaC in aerosol particles on the one hand to the intensity of vertical mixing and the size of the aerosol particles on the other. The empirical relationships as found from a 15-month period of uninterrupted measurements are presented. Radioactive equilibrium is more nearly approached in aerosol particles of more than one micron in diameter than in smaller ones (including the smallest measurable sizes); this holds invariably — and for all height levels. The degree of approach to RaB/RaC equilibrium is the lowest for low altitude (700 m) and negligible vertical mixing: 65% to 75%. At the low-altitude site this figure increases to 80%–90% as the intensity of vertical mixing reaches higher levels. At 1800 m a.s.l., the degree of approach to RaB/RaC equilibrium is nearly 100% when vertical mixing is negligible, and declines with increased vertical mixing activity to a level of only 60–70% for conditions involving strong vertical mass exchange.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bis heute vorliegende direkte Messungen von Grösse und Polarität elektrischer Ladungen in verschiedenen Stockwerken von Gewitterwolken mittels Sondierungen verschiedener Art liefern noch kein widerspruchsfreies Bild.
Notes: Summary The results of direct measurements of the magnitude and sign of electrical charges at different levels in thunderstorm clouds, as derived from soundings of various types, do not, as yet, furnish a consistent picture. Under specific favorable circumstances, valuable additional information may be gained by using continuous, synoptic atmospheric-electrical recordings made at fixed sites at different elevations. — Results of measurements below an extensive anvil cloud (cirrus nothus) are stated. This cloud was drifting away from its source — an extinct thunderstorm cell — at the time the observation was made. The charge of this sheet cloud was consistently positive with a maximum of 2.5·10−8 Cb/m2. — In this study, the cloud is treated as a very thin layer; we must, however, bear in mind that there are marked intracloud variations on account of turbulence and irregular charge distribution. As in other, similar cases, the anvil of a thunderstorm cloud may be regarded as bearing positive space charge. The total charge of the anvil cloud above the generator cell may be estimated to be +150 Cb.

Notes: Summary Using a telemetry sounding system on board one cable car of the Zugspitze cableway, atmospheric electrical phenomena occurring during drifting snow along the slopes of the Wetterstein Moun tains are studied. Dry and wet thermistor temperature, air pressure, polar electrical conductivities and potential gradient are radioed to the basic institute in the valley as the cable car is moving. In the valley the saied magnitudes are plotted against the pressure at the cable car altitude byxy-recorders. The main results are: The space charge density depending on drifting snow processes increases with increasing wind velocity. In the near vicinity of the drifting snow processes, both small and coarse ice crystal fragments being suspended in the air, negative space charges are prevailing over insolated local positive space charges of only short duration. Far away from the drifting snow processes, only very small and evaporating ice crystal fragments being suspended in the air currents, positive space charges are observed without exception. Such clouds of positive charges may move away from their source over more than 10 kilometers. All of these space charge phenomena are independent of the air temperature as long as there are no melting processes on the snow surface. Without mentioning strong heat irradiation, the temperature of the immediate snow surface during drifting snow, as well as the temperature of suspended ice fragments, are lower than the air temperature. Electric charges caused by vehement impact and friction of ice and snow particles may be important enough as to contribute to the thunderstorm electrification. The polarities of the space charges found during drifting snow are in accordance with the main polarity of thunderclouds.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A simple apparatus is described for measuring and recording the following data: 1) Vertical atmospheric current; 2) Atmospheric potential gradient (using a «half-static» method); 3) Frequency und shape of fast changes of the atmospheric potential gradient (at times of electric discharges in the atmosphere). The apparatus consists of a specially divised tube-voltmeter, combining current supply and reading instrument in one housing. Various error limits of the method are discussed. Potential gradients may be measured up to ±1500 volts per meter. Special investigations showed the wind velocity to have no influence on the measurements. 10 days' comparative records of this apparatus and theBenndorf-elektrometer of the Fürstenfeldbruck Geomagnetic Observatory showed complete identity of curves. Several examples of results obtained with the new intrument are given. Simultaneous records of atmospheric potential gradients at various places showed good agreement of curves obtained under similar meteorological conditions. Graphs of average daily variations during the months of 1949 and 1950 are also given.

Notes: Summary If needle-shaped ice crystals are grown in an atmosphere containing traces of nitrous gases, the amount of electrical charge generated when sharp crystal points break away, is between 10 and 50 times as high as in the case of crystals grown in absence of nitrous gases A definite relation has been found to exist between the NO 3 ′ ion concentration of the ice crytals and the amount of charge (average value 2.7×10−8, maximum value 13×10−8 coulombs per gram of ice splinters) generated upon fragmentation. The relation found is possibly of importance with respect to thunderstorm electricity generation.

Notes: Summary Vertical mixing and transport processes are studied, and their variation as influenced by atmospheric fine-structure conditions investigated, using data gathered from simultaneous measurements of RaB and RaC concentration in the ambient air at three mountain stations located close to each other horizontally, but at markedly differing levels (730, 1780 and 2960 m). RaB was used as a tracer on account of the high sensitivity to variations of vertical-mixing activity evidenced by RaB abundance figures. Strong inversions between 700 and 2500 m a.s.l. create a ‘zero condition’ at the higher level, where only 0.1% of the low-level RaB reading obtains; active turbulent mixing, on the other hand, leads to nearly equal RaB readings at the two levels. The vertical gradient of concentration of RaB is used to compute mean vertical-mass-exchange coefficients; the latter are studied in their relation to atmospheric structure characteristics. Statistical studies indicate that the barring effect of inversions is related solely to the magnitude of the inverse temperature gradient. Problems of radioactive equilibrium RaB-RaC are discussed, and the significance of aerosol particle size taken into consideration.

Notes: Summary Recordings of potential gradient and air-earth current in fair-weather conditions were made at high-elevation mountain stations; the latter were generally above the vertical-mixing layer and not disturbed by local sources. Both electrical quantities increased significantly from the day of appearance of a solar flare (or a maximum incidence of flares) till the fourth day after the event. Peak potential gradient and air-earth current exceed the ‘normal levels’ measured during quiet-sun conditions by 50–60% in terms of averages. This result was compared with sferics incidence data and daily geomagnetic coefficients grouped around the selected (flare) dates. Both of the latter quantities show time histories (for the days preceding and following the selected dates) closely correlated with the atmospheric-electrical histories of the same intervals. We may conclude from these results that the total potential between the ground and the upper atmosphere increases for several days after solar flares. The results obtained by previous studies on Mauna Loa confirm this inference. The cause of the phenomenon is presumed to be enhanced thunderstorm activity attendant on solar disturbances.

Notes: Summary Spontaneous formation of negative space charges 50–200 m above the ground has been observed for several consecutive days in a warm maritime (mT) air mass penetrated by cold mountain-slope winds; the cold air underwent turbulent mixing with the pre-existing warm air. The ‘electrifiable’ airspace was characterized by an extremely high aerosol concentration, with the size distribution spectrum shifted from the normal toward a significantly increased incidence of coarse particles.
