    Notes: Abstract To study the fate of Pseudomonas putida DSM 3931 in an aquatic environment, cultures of the strain were released into lake water mesocosms. P. putida, bearing the TOL-plasmid, was released as a representative xenobiotic-degrading microorganism. The release was carried out in mesocosms with unamended lake water and in lake water with added culture medium to compare the survival of the strain due to the influence of different organic load. As a comparison, the survival of P. putida was followed in microcosms with sterile lake water. Survival and fate of the strain were determined by means of immunofluorescence with highly specific monoclonal antibodies and growth on selective agar medium for up to ten weeks after release. Addition of medium had a pronounced influence on survival in mesocosms. In mesocosms without added medium, the number of P. putida cells decreased within ten days by over 2 orders of magnitude. In mesocosms with medium, cell numbers increased in the first two days by an order of magnitude and were, after ten days, in the same range as at the time of introduction. Over time, cell numbers decreased but remained detectable in both types of mesocosms for up to ten weeks after release. In mesocosms with unamended lake water, the major fraction of the cells was attached to particles after two days. In mesocosms with medium, large aggregates of P. putida cells formed which included algae. The observed decrease in cell numbers in mesocosms was attributed mainly to grazing. Sedimentation was an additional factor contributing to loss of cells out of the water column, which especially affected aggregate-forming cells in mesocosms with medium in the long run (beyond two weeks). These studies demonstrate that experimental tools on a mesoscale are crucial in order to understand the complex processes microorganisms are subjected to after release into a natural environment, and that single cell detection, such as immunofluorescence, is essential to understand mechanisms of survival and elimination.

    Notes: Abstract Pollen allergy is a common disease causing rhinoconjunctivitis (hay fever) in 5–10% of the population. Medical studies have indicated that pollen related diseases could be highly reduced if future pollen contents in the air could be predicted. In this work we have developed a new forecasting method that applies the ability of neural nets to predict the future behaviour of chaotic systems in order to make accurate predictions of the airborne pollen concentration. The method requires that the neural net be fed with non-zero values, which restricts the method predictions to the period following the start of pollen flight. The operational method outlined here constitutes a different point of view with respect to the more generally used forecasts of time series analysis, which require input of many meteorological parameters. Excellent forecasts were obtained training a neural net by using only the time series pollen concentration values.

    Notes: Abstract During the BENTART 95 Expedition, 24 Agassiz trawls for macrozoobenthos sampling were carried out at depths of 40–850 m, from north of Livingston Island to the Antarctic Peninsula. The samples were analysed using a semi-quantitative method, and with the resulting numerical data, transformed into a six-point scale, we constructed a Bray-Curtis similarity matrix. A total of 74,624 specimens, belonging to 38 taxonomic groups, were collected. The most abundant group was Polychaeta Sedentaria, with 36% of the total, whereas the highest relative masses were from Ascidiacea (23%), Echinoidea Regularia (18%) and Ophiuroidea (16%). The maximum number of specimens recorded was 15,600 ind./50 l. Cluster analysis separated stations located in Foster Bay (Deception Island), characterised by low taxonomic richness and high relative mass (average: 26.7 kg). A zonation of ascidians, regular sea urchins and ophiuroids was observed at Deception Island, clearly related to depth and substratum type. The remaining stations were separated into two groups. The first one comprised the shallowest stations (40–130 m), dominated by sessile active filter-feeders, belonging to Ascidiacea, Demospongia and Bryozoa, and probably related to high primary production zones. The second group comprised deeper stations and was dominated by classes exhibiting a diversity of trophic strategies: Ophiuroidea and Asteroidea, to 400 m, and Polychaeta Sedentaria at greater depths.

    Notes: Summary  The nonlinear dynamics of axisymmetric, inviscid, incompressible, thin, annular liquid jets subjected to fluctuating body forces is studied numerically by means of an adaptive finite difference method which maps the time-dependent, curvilinear geometry of the jet into a unit square. The fluctuating body forces may arise from fluctuations in the gravitational acceleration in inertial frames or from the acceleration of a non-inertial frame of reference which translates parallelly to an inertial one. It is shown that both the pressure coefficient and the axial location at which the annular jet becomes a solid one are periodic functions of time with a period equal to that of the imposed body force fluctuations, and that their magnitude increases as the amplitude of the body force fluctuations is increased. It has also been shown that, for both intermittent, sinusoidal or rectangular excitations, increases in the frequency of the excitation result in the creation of superharmonics, broad, albeit peaked, spectra, and closed phase planes with many loops.

    Notes: Abstract White-nosed bearded sakis (Chiropotes albinasus) are endemic to the Madeira–Xingú interfluvium in southern Amazonia, though recent fieldwork has produced conflicting data on the southwestern limits of the species's geographic range. We reevaluated the distribution of bearded sakis on the basis of surveys from 34 sites throughout the Brazilian state of Rondônia. Chiropotes albinasus occurred at seven sites in the eastern part of the state, including two west of the Jiparaná–Pimenta Bueno river system in the extreme south, but there is no record of their presence further north and west in the Jiparaná–Guaporé interfluvium and they were absent from the Jiparaná–Mamoré interfluvium. The data suggest that ecological, rather than geographic barriers restrict the distribution of Chiropotes albinasus in southern Rondônia, but are contradictory with regard to the possible determining factors. Chiropotes albinasus appears able to thrive in transitional, savanna-like ecosystems in southern Rondônia, but is unexpectedly absent from adjacent areas of terra firme forest. Syntopy with the only other pitheciine found in the state (Pithecia irrorata) appears to have a negative effect on the abundance of Chiropotes albinasus which implies that interspecific competition may reinforce a complex of limiting factors, such as the availability of key plant species. Despite showing that Chiropotes albinasus is widespread in southern Rondônia, we also confirm its absence from the western two thirds of the state, a significant reduction in the known range of the species.
