Notes: Abstract An exploratory study has been made of the adsorption of incipient combustion gases on metal surfaces and organic metal chelate coated metal surfaces. Data obtained in this study suggest that a smoke or fire detection system could be based on the adsorption-photoelectric effects observed.

Notes: Abstract This paper aims to provide insight into the choice of foreign mode of entry (as proxied by equity stakes) of Singaporean multinationals. An electric framework based on Hill, Hwang and Kim's (1990) study is used to model the choice of entry mode. Three broad categories of variables, relating to control, cost and competence, are posited to affect the equity stake in an overseas venture. This study focuses on the manufacturing sector. We used a survey instrument targeting CEOs and Managing Directors and received 83 valid responses. TOBIT analysis lends support to the hypothesized relationships.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we report the behaviour of defects under high pressure in severely cold-deformed 316 stainless steel. In situ electrical resistivity measurements indicate a minimum in the reduced resistivity ratio at 2 GPa associated with a characteristic relaxation time of 500±5 sec. Microhardness data on pressure-treated and recovered samples are consistent with the electrical resistivity behaviour. X-ray powder diffraction rings indicate sharpening beyond 2GPa. The decrease in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the strongest ring is about 2% at pressures beyond 2 GPa. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that samples pressure-treated beyond 2 GPa have a polygonized dislocation structure. This is in sharp contrast to the tangled dislocation structure observed in the cold-worked samples. The experimental results suggest a recovery stage in cold-worked stainless steel at 2 GPa. We propose that the recovery process is activated through an enhanced vacancy concentration caused by deformation, a pressure-induced vacancy-dislocation interaction and consequently a pressure-assisted dislocation mobility leading to polygonization.

Notes: Abstract Planarization of dielectric materials in multilevel devices has become an important topic in recent years. Planarization achieved through chemical/mechanical polishing (CMP) is the foremost of the techniques available to provide an appropriate low-topography surface for accurate lithography. In this study the effects of the planarization process on deposited SiO2 films, a material to which CMP is frequently applied, have been examined. The analysis, completed using transmission electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, revealed evidence of chemical/structural modification of the SiO2 to 100–200 nm from the polished surface and more heavily altered or deformed regions extending to a few tens of nm in depth.

Notes: Abstract This paper analyses the water management performance of small holder irrigation systems in Zimbabwe. The government and farmer managed systems are compared in terms of their ability to match desired with actual water supply. Desired supply is defined as crop water requirements adjusted downwards by rainfall where relevant. The Theil measure of accuracy of forecasts is used to calculate the error committed by each system in trying to match water supply and demand. The analysis shows that, everything else being equal, the farmer managed system performs better than the government system in matching supply and demand. This means that the farmer managed systems should be encouraged for future small holder irrigation development in Zimbabwe.

Notes: Abstract A heat-treatment procedure providing for enhanced stress-corrosion cracking resistance without any sacrifice of yield strength in 7075 aluminium alloy is investigated using transmission electron microscopy. It is suggested that the heat treatment (known as retrogression and re-ageing) provides for large grain-boundary precipitates and coherent matrix precipitates. The latter provides for the high strength levels while the grainboundary precipitates provide for enhanced stress-corrosion cracking resistance. A hydrogen embrittlement mechanism of stress-corrosion cracking is assigned to this alloy system.

Notes: Summary Explants from spinal cord, brain stem, cerebellum and cerebral cortex of 5–18 weeks old human embryos and newborn rats were cultivated for 2–30 days. Most of the blood vessel fragments in the explant showed a rather normal structure of their wall even after 30 days in vitro. However, the number of small vessels was reduced. The lumen of most vessels was not collapsed and in some cases filled with cell debris. The endothelial cells remained connected by terminal bars, contained many vesicles and vacuoles of varying size and osmiophilic inclusions of cell debris. While in large vessels the endothelium was always present, in some small vessels near the edge of the explant it was absent. Here, glial endfeet made contact with a basal lamina, which enclosed varying amounts of cell debris. Pericytes were rarely observed after more than 10 days in vitro. Although the perivascular astroglial sheath disintegrated during the first few days in vitro, it was reconstructed and, after about 10 days in vitro, became more complete and differentiated than it was at the time of explantation. Many glial endfeet contained aggregated osmiophilic inclusions. At these sites the perivascular glial sheath and the adhering basal lamina often were discontinuous. The basal laminae were well developed, but disintegrated where the glial sheath was discontinuous. It is concluded that in vitro vessel fragments may be preserved without normal function and basal laminae survive without endothelium.
