Notes: Summary It is known that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is synthesized, stored and released from the myocytes of mammalian heart, but the role of cardiac autonomic nerves in triggering the release of ANP has not been fully assessed. We have therefore measured plasma ANP concentrations in the right atrium and the main pulmonary artery, together with pulmonary haemodynamics in 10 heart transplant (HT) recipients who underwent graded submaximal bicycle exercise during right-heart catheterisation. Pulmonary arterial blood samples and haemodynamic measurements were obtained at rest, on peak of exercise, and after ten minutes of recovery. A radioreceptor of α-human ANP was used to measure ANP levels. Exercise significantly incresed ANP levels in both the right atrium from 24 pM (resting values) to 48.5 pM, and the main pulmonary artery from 27.1 pM (resting values) to 58.4 pM. We conclude that HT recipients still retain the ability to increase ANP release in response to graded submaximal dynamic exercise, and that the mechanisms underlying ANP release depend on other factors than the integrity of cardiac innervation in man.

Notes: Conclusions It may be reasonably concluded from this study that the range of variation in these ratios of assessed to actual value are of a reasonable size for the great majority of cases. The frequency distribution of these sample ratios was not normal, however, as was assumed a process of this type would produce. On the other hand, the failure of the regression analysis to identify any significant variables which would explain these variations would tend to re-enforce the assumption that the fluctuations were indeed of a random nature. To sum it up in one paragraph, aside from a few extreme cases, the assessing process appears to give estimates which are more consistent than would be expected under the assumption that any errors would be of a random nature, but the regression analysis was unable to isolate any particular socioeconomic characteristics which would explain the variation which was present.

Notes: Abstract To develop a comprehensive ‘cells-first’ approach to the origin of life, we propose that protocells form spontaneously and that the fission and fusion of these protocells drives the dynamics of their evolution. The fitness criterion for this evolution is taken to be the the stability (conservation) of domains in the protocellular membrane as determined by non-covalent molecular associations between the amphiphiles of the membrane and a subset of the macromolecules in the protocell. In the presence of a source of free energy the macromolecular content of the protocell (co-)evolves as the result of (domain-dependent) membrane-catalysed polymerisation of the prebiotic constituents delivered to the protocell by fusion. The metabolism of the cell therefore (co-)evolves on a rugged fitness landscape. We indicate how domain evolution with the same fitness criterion can potentially give rise to coding. Membrane domains may therefore provide the link between protocells and the RNA/DNA-world.

Notes: Abstract A program of lunar infrared radiometry which uses large area scanning is described. Procedures for atmospheric attenuation correction and data reduction to temperature by relative radiometry are outlined. The scan data of the waning Moon taken during ten evenings in the 10- to 12-µm window are presented as isothermal contour maps of the lunar disc. More than 160 areas of anomalous thermal emission have been found in the lunar darkside data. These are tabulated and are also shown on an accompanying map. An error analysis, derived from accuracy estimates of the independent parameters, is included.

Notes: Abstract Temperature profiles from seven regions of the Moon were recorded during a total eclipse using an infrared radiometer and telescope at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The eclipse was visible from this site from beginning to end. Target areas chosen range from mare areas to mountainous highlands. Theoretical temperature curves were calculated using a thermophysical model in which the lunar material properties are variable. These curves are compared with the experimental data. A description of the instrumentation, observations, calibration, signal reduction, and the theoretical model is given. The results show excellent agreement between the observational and theoretical temperatures during the eclipse. The apparent differences between the observed and calculated temperatures during pre- and post-eclipse are minimal after directional radiation is taken into account.

Notes: Abstract The development of the thyroid tissue and clearance of thyroid hormones was studied in rainbow trout embryos reared at 8.5 and 5.5 °C, in order to determine if these events are affected by temperature in the same manner as growth rate. Although the change in growth rate was found to be predictable using the degree-day model, the pattern of whole body thyroid hormone clearance was not similarly related to rearing temperature. Further, although the thyroid follicles appeared at different times in embryos reared at the two temperatures, the differences could not be predicted using the degree-day model. These results suggest that the development of the thyroid tissue and the clearance of yolk hormones are not directly related to rearing temperature. Immunohistochemical staining of the thyroid tissue indicated two phases of thyroid activity, one associated with hormonogenesis, and the other a later phase of hormone release. However, there was no increase in 'whole body' thyroid hormone level associated with the time of appearance of colloid in the follicles. Further, evidence was presented to suggest that the extraction method used did not remove thyroid hormone associated with the colloid in the follicles. There was also evidence of sporadic increases in 'whole body' thyroid hormone content, after the development of phase 2 thyroid follicles which might indicate pulsatile release of T4 and T3.
