Notes: Abstract The procedures developed and standardised for estimation of ultra trace quantities of Pu and Am in environmental samples involve matrix dependent sample preparation, preconcentration of the nuclides by coprecipitation on iron hydroxide and or bismuth phosphate, ion exchange, electrodeposition and counting by alpha spectrometry. Isotopic analysis of Th in chicken bone using oxalate precipitation, ion exchange, electrodeposition and alpha spectrometry has indicated higher build up of228Th in chicken bone from monazite areas possibly from metabolized228Ra.

Notes: Abstract The study of physico-chemical and biotic processes in the environment is essential to understanding the behavior of transuranic nuclides and to assess their environmental impact. Dialysis, ion exchange, and co-precipitation techniques have been used to study speciation. The dissolved fraction of239,240Pu in coastal waters of Bombay harbor bay and in interstitial water from bottom sediments of the bay were found to be associated with organic matter. The desorption of Pu from sediments in coastal waters is influenced by salinity and carbonate. Studies indicate that, even from anoxic sediments, remobilization and the potential for migration is not significant.

Notes: Abstract Distribution of trace metals in the Periyar river has been investigated in detail. The fluvial concentrations of trace metals increase in river water and decrease in sediments during the summer months due to solubilization and concentration by evaporation. The levels, especially of Zn and Cd which are industrial pollutants increase by a factor of 10 both in water and sediments at the industrial zone. The concentration of Cd in the river water approaches the WHO standards for safe limits in drinking water. Solubilization at the backwater zone under high salinity is identified as one of the major mechanisms of trace metal transport to the marine environment. River meandering is responsible for large scale deposition of suspended solids at the industrial zone during the monsoon period. The trace metals exhibit build-up in specific concentration in the suspended solids in proportion to their residence time.

Notes: Abstract The radionuclide concentrations in Periyar river at the industrial zone showed significant reduction, by factors ranging form 3 to 5 during the post-1980 period as compared to pre-1980 due to better effluent treatment practices adopted by industrial units situated on the river bank. The studies revealed that nearly 90% of Po-210 in the river environment was unsupported, showing atmospheric pathway of deposition by decay of Rn-222. The mass and activity (Ra-228) median diameters of sedimented particels of less than 63 µ were 15 ± 2.8 µm and 18 ± 2.5 µm. respectively. The particle size followed log-normal distribution. Depth distribution of Ra-228 in sediment was investigated for its concentration. This nuclide showed highest concentration at depths ranging from 10 to 30 cm. The studies have helped to identify that particles of less than 63 µm present in the sediment layer up to 30 cm were mainly responsible for transport of radionuclides in the river and its estuary.

Notes: Abstract The river Periyar in the State of Kerala, India is subjected to pollution from a number of industrial units such as zinc smelter, rare earth plant, phosphatic fertilizer unit etc. The levels of Zn and Cd in water and sediments in the river have in recent years increased ten fold as compared to a study conducted earlier during 1970. The levels of these trace metals in water increase at the backwater zone under high salinity in summer due to solubilisation from the sediments. Among the lanthanides Ce is the most predominant in water. Elements such as Ce, La, Sm, Gd and Y show a concentration factor of 103 in sediments. The trace metals show maximum concentration at the top layer of sediment column extending up to 20 cm from the surface. Particle size analysis of river sediments in the industrial outfall area shows a mass median diameter of 11 μm with a geometric standard deviation of 2.4 for Zn and Cd.
