Notes: Abstract This paper describes a model of a neural visual system of a higher animal, in which the capability of pattern recognition develops adaptively. To produce the adaptability, we adopted “self-organizing cells,” and with them modeled feature-detecting cells which were discovered by Hubel and Wiesel and whose plasticity was found by Blakemore and Cooper. Combining the “self-organizing cells” and the learning principle of a Perceptron-type system, we constructed a model of the whole visual system. The model is also equipped with an eye movement control mechanism for gazing, which reduces the number of “selforganizing cells” required for pattern recognition, thus contributing to their quick self-organization. Computer simulation and an experiment using a hardware simulator showed that “self-organizing cells” quickly become sensitive to the features often seen and that the resulted system can classify patterns with a rather small number of feature-detecting cells.

Notes: Abstract A CH3OH-utilizing bacterium that has the ability to produce extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) was isolated from a soil sample, and was identified as the obligate methylotroph Methylobacillus sp. strain 12S on the basis of its 16S rDNA sequence and growth-substrate specificity. The EPS produced by strain 12S was purified and the sugar composition was analysed by GC-MS and HPLC to reveal that the EPS was a heteropolymer composed of glucosyl, galactosyl, and mannosyl residues in the molar ratio 3:1:1. In order to produce mono- and/or oligosaccharides by single-step fermentation from CH3OH, stain 12S was mutagenized by transposon 5. Among eleven EPS-deficient mutants, three strains were found to accumulate significant amounts of reducing sugars in the media. The amounts of the reducing sugars produced by the mutants (〉ca. 700 mg glucose equivalent/l) were 〉11–22 times higher than those produced by the wild-type strain (〈ca. 60 mg glucose equivalent/l). The GC-MS analysis showed that all the mutants accumulated glucose, erythrose, threose and a disaccharide-like compound in the media.

Notes: Abstract Chlorobis/β-diketonato/ oxotechnetium/V/ complexes [TcOCl/β-dik/2, β-diketone=acetylacetone, benzoylacetone and dibenzoylmethane] were newly synthesized using macroamount of99Tc. These complexes were further separated into geometrical isomers. Furthermore, an improvement of the yields for the syntheses of tris/β-dike-tonato/technetium/III/ complexes [Tc/β-dik/3, β-diketone=acetylacetone, benzoylacetone and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone] was examined using Tc/III/-thiourea complexes as a starting material.

Notes: Abstract Based on the fundamental parameters governing the distribution equilibrium of tetraphenylarsonium chloride (TPAC) between then-hexane-chloroform and aqueous solutions, the extraction mechanism of pertechnetate with TPAC has been systematically investigated. By the analysis of a relation of the distribution ratio of pertechnetate and the hydrogen ion concentration, the dissociation constant of pertechnetic acid was determined to beK a=2.09±0.18 at 25 °C.

Notes: Abstract Chemical effects on the intensity ratio of LX-ray of molybdenum compounds irradiated by 11-keV electrons and by 3-MeV protons were studied using an X-ray crystal spectrometer. It was found that the intensity ratios of Lγ1/Lβ1 markedly decrease with increase of ionicity of molybdenum compounds. An exception was for the case of metallic molybdenum.

Notes: Abstract Base hydrolysis of Tc(acac)3 and Ru(acac)3 was studied in 0.1–1M NaOH at different temperatures. In spite of apparent similarity of these complexes Tc(acac)3 showed more complexity than Ru(acac)3 in kinetic behavior. Tc(acac)3 decomposes with a rate, d[Tc(acac)3]/dt=(k1[OH−]+ +k2[OH−]2)[Tc(acac)3], where k1 and k2 at 25°C are (1.67±0.11)×10−5 mol−1·s−1 and (1.71±±0.14)×10−5 mol−2·s−1, respectively. Decomposition of Ru(acac)3 is expressed by the rate equation d[Ru(acac)3]/dt=k[OH−][Ru(acac)3], where k at 37°C is (8.01±0.23)×10−6 mol−1·s−1.

Notes: Summary The retention and selectivity of flavonoids (baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, oroxylin A) inScutellariae radix have been studies by high-performance thin-layer chromatography on phenyldimethylethoxysilane-treated silica plates. The silica plates treated with phenyl groups were used for physical and chemical analysis. From elemental carbon analysis, the maximum number of bonded phenyl surface groups per gram was calculated to be 0.467×1021 (Oginal silica plate: Merck Art. 15109, Silica gel 100 F254). With methanol-1/15 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.2) mixtures as mobile phase, baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A inScutellariae radix were separated. It has been shown that phenyl-treated plates are more suitable for selective separation of baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A than octadecyl-treated plates.

Notes: Abstract Tc(III)-EDTA complex has been synthesized by the ligand substitution reaction of hexakis-(thiourea) technetium(III) ion with EDTA. The complex exhibits absorption maxima at 368 and 470 nm. The formation reaction proceeds predominantly as follows: $$Tc(tu)_6^{3 + } + H_2 EDTA^{2 - } \to Tc(III) - EDTA$$ The rate constant k2 was determined to be (2.1±0.2)×10−2 M−1.s−1 at 25°C.

Notes: Abstract L X-ray spectra of iodine and antimony compounds were measured using a doublecrystal spectrometer, LΥ4 X-rays emitted from the valence 5p electrons were found to be sensitive to the chemical environment. The LΥ4/Lβ3, LΥ1/LΥ1 and Lβ2,15/Lα1 intensity ratios were remarkably changed in various compounds of these elements. LΥ4 energies of iodine compounds were shifted with the increase of the formal oxidation number.

Notes: Abstract A new chemical species of bis(acetonitrile)bis(acetylacetonato)technetium(III), [Tc(acac)2(CH3CN)2]+, has been prepared by the reaction of tris(acetylacetonato)technetium(III) with acetonitrile in the presence of a strong acid, perchloric or hydrochloric acid. The reaction kinetics were followed by observing spectral change of Tc(acac)3 in the UV-visible region. The complex has been characterized by combination of elemental analyses, IR and UV-visible spectrophotometry, ion-exchange chromatography, and paper electrophoresis. Applicability of this substance to synthesize mixed-ligand technetium(III) complexes was discussed based on the solubility of this complex and the ease of substitution of the acetonitrile ligand.
