    Notes: Abstract. Effects of the extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+] o ) on whole cell membrane currents were examined in mouse osteoclastic cells generated from bone marrow/stromal cell coculture. The major resting conductance in the presence of 1 mm Ca2+ was mediated by a Ba2+-sensitive, inwardly rectifying K+ (IRK) current. A rise in [Ca2+] o (5–40 mm) inhibited the IRK current and activated an 4,4′-diisothiocyano-2,2′-stilbenedisulfonate (DIDS)-sensitive, outwardly rectifying Cl− (ORCl) current. The activation of the ORCl current developed slowly and needed higher [Ca2+] o than that required to inhibit the IRK current. The inhibition of the IRK current consisted of two components, initial and subsequent late phases. The initial inhibition was not affected by intracellular application of guanosine 5′-O-(3-thiotriphosphate) (GTPγS) or guanosine 5′-O-(2-thiodiphosphate) (GDPβS). The late inhibition, however, was enhanced by GTPγS and attenuated by GDPβS, suggesting that GTP-binding proteins mediate this inhibition. The activation of the ORCl current was suppressed by pretreatment with pertussis toxin, but not potentiated by GTPγS. An increase in intracellular Ca2+ level neither reduced the IRK current nor activated the ORCl current. Staurosporine, an inhibitor for protein kinase C, did not modulate the [Ca2+] o -induced changes in the IRK and ORCl conductances. These results suggest that high [Ca2+] o had a dual action on the membrane conductance of osteoclasts, an inhibition of an IRK conductance and an activation of an ORCl conductance. The two conductances modulated by [Ca2+] o may be involved in different phases of bone resorption because they differed in Ca2+ sensitivity, temporal patterns of changes and regulatory mechanisms.

    Notes: Summary A prenatal diagnosis of GM1-gangliosidosis was made in a pregnancy at risk, on the basis of a deficiency of β-galactosidase activity demonstrated in cultured aminiotic fluid cells. Biochemical analyses were performed in the aborted fetus. GM1-ganglioside β-galactosidase activity was reduced to 1% of the control value in both the brain and liver of the affected fetus. Lamellar bodies suggestive of membranous cytoplasmic bodies were found in cells of basal ganglions, while the accumulation of GM1-ganglioside in the brain was not remarkable.

    Notes: Abstract: The 16O(13C,12C)17O reaction at 50 MeV has been investigated using the kinematical coincidence method. Polarization tensors t 20 and t 40 of 12C[2+ 1] for the quantization axis taken along the direction of propagation have been measured by analyzing the energy spectrum of 12C[2+ 1], modulated by the effect of γ ray emission. The deduced t 40 values significantly deviate from zero, contrary to the prediction of the distorted-wave Born approximation theory based on one-step p shell neutron stripping without spin-dependent interactions. The phenomenological spin–orbit interaction necessary to reproduce the magnitude of measured t 40 is found to be much larger than the folding model prediction. It is shown that the experimental polarization tensors as well as the cross sections can be reproduced by introducing multi-step processes involving excitations in 12C and 13C without introducing spin-dependent interactions.

    Notes: Abstract: The 16O(11B,12C)15N reaction at 41.25 MeV has been investigated using the kinematical coincidence method. Polarization tensors t20 and t40 of 12C[2+ 1] for the quantization axis taken along the direction of propagation have been measured at center-of-mass angles (Θc.m.) between 48° and 62° by analyzing the energy spectrum of 12C[2+ 1] modulated by the effect of γ-ray emission. The cross-sections of the transfer reactions leading to the 12C[g.s.]+15N[g.s.], 12C[2+ 1]+15N[g.s.] and 12C[g.s.]+15N[3/2- 1] final states have also been measured in the range 48°≤Θc.m.≤ 120°. The polarization tensor terms of 12C[2+ 1] largely deviating from zero have been observed, contrary to the prediction by the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). The one-step DWBA calculation also fails in describing the transfer reaction cross-sections. It is shown that the coupled channel model calculation including excitations and reorientations in 11B and 12C satisfactorily reproduces both the tensor terms and the cross-sections of the transfer reactions. The multi-step processes passing through the excited states of 11B are found to significantly contribute to the reaction.

    Notes: Abstract In La2−x Ba x CuO4 (LBCO) the transition to a low-temperature tetragonal phase and the suppression of superconductivity occur at the carrier concentration p≈ 1/8 per copper. We will discuss the roles of various material parameters that control this instability. An unusual lattice softening has been found by ultrasonic measurement on La2−x Sr x CuO4 (LSCO). This softening is present only in an in-plane shearing mode and is ascribed to the growth of structural fluctuations in the normal state. These phenomena are closely related because both the structural change in LBCO and the applied strain in LSCO lift the degeneracy of in-plane oxygen sites. They clarify the importance of strong coupling between the normal-state electronic system and the lattice by a Peierls-type mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract In La2−x Ba x CuO4 (LBCO), the structural transition to a low-temperature tetragonal phase below 60 K and suppression of superconductivity are observed when the carrier density isp ∼ 1 /8 per copper. The replacement by divalent ions smaller than Ba2+ suppresses the static deformation of the lattice. We have found that the variationsT d2 and superconducting transition temperatureT c are quantitatively characterized by the averaged ionic radius at the La site or lattice parameters. This aspect of substitution could be regarded as the effect of chemical pressure, since similar variations have been reported on applying hydrostatic pressure. In La2−x−y Nd y (Ba, Sr) x CuO4,T d2 increases with increasingy in a wide range ofp whileT c is suppressed only at p∼ l /8. The structural transition atT d2 here should be ascribed mainly to the crystallochemical origin.

    Notes: Abstract Out-of-plane resistivity pc(T) of optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2−xSrxCuO4 has been investigated under hydrostatic pressure up to 8GPa. We found a drastic decrease in ϱc which reaches 50% at 8GPa. The large change of ϱc is understood as due to a small variation of the lattice parameter c. In comparison with a change of pc(T) estimated from a change of c due to thermal contraction, we conclude that the well known temperature-linear dependence of ϱc is apparent metallic one; essentially ϱc is nonmetallic over the whole temperature range, and can be described in terms of tunneling or quantum hopping conduction between CuO2 layers. Such tunneling conduction is enhanced by the scattering in the CuO2 plane at the oxygen defects which affect the in-plane resistivity only very weakly.

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated the effect of the impurity scattering due to a small amount of oxygen defect, δ (δ 〈 0.01) on the anisotropic resistivity of La 2−x Sr x CuO 4−δ in a wide x range up to x = 0.26. In the superconducting region with 0.06 ≤ x ≤ 0.22, we found that impurity scattering by the oxygen defect remarkably decreases the c-axis resistivity ρc over the whole temperature range. The finding is interpreted in terms of the nonmetallic conduction along the c axis which is enhanced by scattering the confined carriers in the CuO 2 plane. On the other hand, the enhancement of the c-axis conduction diminishes in the nonsuperconducting region. This is consistent with the two-dimensional nature of the electronic state which stabilizes the superconducting ground state in the cuprates.

    Notes: Abstract We have measured ρ c (T) for La 2−x Sr x CuO 4 (LSCO) with x=0.15 under anisotropic pressures. The c-axis compression, which decreases ρ c (T), reduces T c drastically, whereas the c-axis stretch, which increases ρ c (T), enhances T c from 38K at the ambient pressure to 51.6K at 8GPa. The T c = 51.6K is the highest record so far reported for LSCO. The variation of T c is well scaled with variations of ρ c . We deduce that the enhancement of T c in LSCO is mainly caused by the suppression of interlayer coupling, though two dimensionality is generally known as a destructive factor for conventional superconductivity.

    Notes: Abstract Entropy changes related to point defects within the high-temperature limit have been studied, on the basis of exact frequency spectra obtained by computer calculations, for linear and square lattices in the light of lattice vibration in the harmonic nearest-neighbourforce approximation. The binding entropy of a vacancy-solute pair is independent of the solute mass but depends on the force-constant around the defect, whereas the entropy change due to substitution by a solute atom is dependent on the solute mass as well as the force constant. For square lattices, the displacement amplitude of atoms has been shown in connection with the localized or resonance mode, which may have implications for solute diffusion.
