    Notes: Summary Peptidylarginine (protein-L-arginine) deiminase activities have been demonstrated in extracts of rat and mouse peritoneal macrophages, bone marrow cells, splenic adherent cells, neutrophils, and mouse monocyte/macrophage cell lines. The enzyme in these cells is indistinguishable from the skeletal muscle enzyme with respect to immunochemical properties.

    Notes: Abstract We present an overview and instrumental details of the solar XUV Doppler Telescope (XDT) launched in January 1998 with the S520CN-22 sounding rocket of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. The XDT observes nearly single-temperature solar corona at 1.8 MK with angular resolution of ≈ 5′′ pixel size, together with the ability to detect the coronal velocity field with a full-Sun field of view. By use of normal incidence optics whose primary and secondary mirrors are coated with multilayer materials in two sectors, the XDT takes images of the Sun in a set of shorter and longer wavelength bands around the Fe xiv 211.3 Å emission line. Summation of a pair of images in the two bands provides an image of the 1.8 MK-corona while the difference between the two provides velocity images of the Fe xiv-emitting plasma. A brief description on the observation sequence together with the flight result is also given.

    Notes: Abstract  A halophilic and thermophilic isolate from the sand of Tottori Dune was found to produce a thermostable and halophilic leucine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.9). It was identified to be a new strain of Bacillus licheniformis. The enzyme gene was cloned into Escherichia coli JM109 with a vector plasmid pUC18. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity from the clone cell extract by ion-exchange column chromatography with a yield of 31%. The enzyme was found to be composed of eight subunits identical in relative molecular mass (43 000). The amino acid sequence of the enzyme, deduced from the nucleotide sequence of the gene, showed an identity of 84.6% with that of the B. stearothermophilus enzyme [Nagata S, Tanizawa K, Esaki N, Sakamoto Y, Ohshima T, Tanaka H, Soda K (1988) Biochemistry 27:9056–9062], although both enzymes were similar to each other in various enzymological properties such as thermostability, substrate and coenzyme specificities, and stereospecificity for hydrogen transfer from the C-4 of NADH. However, they were markedly distinct from each other in halophilicity: the B. licheniformis enzyme was much more stable than the other in the presence of high concentrations of salts.

    Notes: Abstract. To investigate whether common variants in the human genetic background are associated with pathogenesis of ischemic heart diseases, we systematically surveyed 41 possible candidate genes for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by directly sequencing 96 independent alleles at each locus, derived from 48 unrelated Japanese patients with myocardial infarction, including 25.8 kb 5' flanking regions, 56.8 kb exonic and 35.4 kb intronic sequences, and 1.8 kb 3' flanking regions. In this genomic DNA of nearly 120 kb, we identified 187 SNPs: 55 in 5' flanking regions, seven in 5' untranslated regions (UTRs), 52 in coding elements, 64 in introns, eight in 3' UTRs, and one in a 3' flanking region. Among the 52 coding SNPs, 26 were non-synonymous changes. Allelic frequencies of some of the polymorphisms were significantly different from those reported in European populations. For example, the Q506R substitution in the coagulation factor V gene, the so-called "Leiden mutation", has a reported frequency of 2.3% in Europeans, but we detected the Leiden mutation in none of the Japanese genomes that we investigated. The allelic frequencies of the –33A〉G SNP in the thrombomodulin gene were also very different; this allele occurred at a 12% frequency in the Japanese patients that we examined, although it had been detected in none of 82 Caucasians reported previously. These data support the hypothesis that some SNPs are specific to particular ethnic groups.

    Notes: Abstract TheG-matrix interactions are derived from the Jülich YN interaction models A and B, and compared with those from the Nijmegen models. The DDHF calculations for heavy A hypernuclei and the shell-model analysis for spin-doublet states of light hypernuclei are performed by use of theG-matrix interactions. It is demonstrated that the OBE models can be tested by the hypernuclear calculations.

    Notes: Abstract A new stereological method for the estimation of the contiguity (the degree of contact) for the monodispersed system of spherical particles is reported. Since this method is applicable to point-like contacts, the contiguity of ceramic particles can be evaluated in a metal matrix composite in which the contact is assumed to be point. The contiguity is derived from the geometrical calculation of centre-to-centre distance between particles, evaluation of contact, and consideration of the geometrical probability that two particles in contact are cut simultaneously by a test plane. The contiguity can be expressed by either the number of contacts per unit volume or the number of contacts per particle. Applying this method to a model material (Shirasu-balloon/aluminium alloy composite), the interrelations between the change in the contiguity and some physical properties of the material can be accurately explained.

    Notes: Abstract The thread that runs through all research in the field of superconductivity is new physics through discovery of new materials. The knowledge of superconducting materials has become voluminous and complex. The comprehensive review of the superconducting materials is of particular importance. The main purpose of this report is to present the results of classification for chalcogenide superconductors. Superconducting critical temperature Tc, crystal-structure type and the references proper to these compounds are summarized. Brief survey of the superconductivity in chalcogen elements is also given. Furthermore, as representative sulfide and selenide, superconducting characteristics of CuRh2S4 and CuRh2Se4 will be shown.

    Notes: Abstract Fe/M (M = Ag, Zn and Sn) multilayers prepared by a vacuum evaporation method are studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the case of an M = Ag multilayer, MS reveals that Fe in the multilayer remains as anα-phase down to the layer thickness of 10 nm. This result is in agreement with the RBS result that Fe and Ag form a completely discrete layer structure without any mutual mixing. For the case of M = Zn and Sn, RBS reveals that a considerable mixing has taken place between Fe and Sn during the specimen preparation. MS on Fe/Sn specimens with different layer thickness shows that an alloy phase of about 5 nm thickness is formed at the interface. Structural as well as magnetic properties of the alloy phase are discussed based on MS at different temperatures and on reported results of the intermetallic compound FeSn.
