    Notes: Abstract —The usefulness of microtremors as a geophysical exploration tool has been analyzed. This application is possible due to the relationship between the main resonance frequency of a given soil, obtained from the H/V spectral ratios of microtremors, its thickness and average shear velocity. We first measured the ambient noise at 33 sites and determined their main resonance frequency. Detailed geotechnical information was available for 23 of the sites, thereby allowing us to establish a quantitative relationship between the resonance frequency and the thickness of the soil, and indirectly between either of them and the shear velocity of the soil. The practical application of this relationship has revealed its usefulness in determining the surface structure of a valley with excellent accuracy, with an error of only 15% in the depths calculated. These errors are due to the simplification of the problem that this method implies: it requires that the shear velocity vary constantly with depth throughout the study region, which is evidently not always so, and that the input data themselves intrinsically have a certain degree of uncertainty. This method is therefore not valid when there is no mechanical contrast between the study soil and the underlying layer or when the shear velocity varies irregularly with depth in the study area.

    Notes: Abstract We propose mathematical models for a knitted fabric in tension that can be used to calculate the strain of the cloth thread from the properties of the cloth and the loads applied to the cloth. Under simplifying assumptions, the problem is reduced to consideration of an elementary cell of the cloth that contains a thread loop. The loop is first modeled by a thread oval with point forces and then by a plate with a hole under distributed loads. In strength analysis, this allows one to use methods of elasticity theory. A number of hypotheses are used to establish the relation between the stress state of the thread oval and the corresponding state of the plate, which makes it possible to model the mechanical behavior of a thread in the material in a variety of forms. The theoretical relationships obtained are compared to the experimental data available in the literature.

    Notes: Abstract Employing a different culture strategy, we obtained a greatly improved frequency of embryo rescue in intersubgeneric soybean hybrids. Successful crosses were obtained in 31 different genotype combinations between nine Brazilian soybean lines as the female parents and 12 accessions from Glycine canescens, G. microphylla, G. tabacina and G. tomentella. The hybrid pod retention rate dropped to about 10% during the first 8 days after pollination and stayed largely unchanged up to the 20th day. Immature harvested seeds fell into three size groups: Group 1, smaller than 1.3 mm (mostly empty seed coats); Group 2, 1.9–5.0 mm; Group 3, larger than 5 mm (from selfing). A total of 90 putative hybrid embryos were rescued using a highly enriched B5 medium to nourish the newly dissected embryos. The growing embryos were then placed in a high osmotic, modified B5 medium to induce maturation and dormancy. Schenk and Hildebrandt medium was used to germinate the dormant, partially dehydrated, physiologically mature embryos. Approximately 37% of the rescued embryos developed into plantlets in vitro, and approximately 8% grew into mature plants in the greenhouse. Morphological, cytological and isoenzyme patterns confirmed the hybrid status of all seven mature plants, all of which were generated using G. tomentella G 9943 as the paternal parent. It was observed that all soybean lines crossed with G 9943 were capable of producing mature hybrid plants. There was no correlation between the initial size of Group 2 seeds and plant survival rate. The hybrids were cloned by grafting and treated with colchicine. One of the treated plants displayed chromosome doubling.

    Notes: Abstract. In this work we have studied the dependence of the optical properties of self-assembled InAs quantum wires (QWr) grown on InP(001) on the growth temperature of the InP cap layer, as a mean for controlling the InAs QWr size. Our main result is that we can tune the emission wavelength of InAs QWr either at 1.3 $\mu $ m or 1.55 $\mu $ m at room temperature. We suggest that the role of growth temperature is to modify the As/P exchange at the InAs QWr/InP cap layer interface and consequently the amount of InAs involved in the nanostructure. In this way, due to the enhancement of the As/P exchange, the higher the growth temperature of the cap layer, the smaller in height the InAs quantum wires. Accordingly, the emission wavelength is blue shifted with InP cap layer growth temperature as the electron and hole ground state moves towards higher energies. Optical studies related to the dynamics of carrier recombination and light emission quenching with temperature are also included.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we present magnitude (Ms) – magnitude(mb) and magnitude-intensity relationships which areconsidered the most adequate in the Ibero-Maghrebianregion. This work is based on selected samples ofrecently revised events with magnitude mb assigned bythe Instituto Geográfico Nacional (I.G.N.) and Msassigned by I.S.C and N.E.I.C., and isoseismal mapsfrom 142 events. Using these data, we have obtainedone magnitude (Ms) – magnitude (mb) relationship, twomagnitude (mb and Ms) assignment relationships viaepicentral intensity (I0), and ten magnitude (mb andMs) assignments relationships via macroseismicinformation: four using Ambraseys' methodology (1985)and six using the isoseismal area of degree III, IV and VI. According to the obtained results it could be concluded that historical magnitude assignment with lesser uncertainties are those obtained via macroseismic information using magnitude-intensity relationships with Ambraseys' methodology (1985). The magnitude-isoseismal area assignment relationships have, in most cases, great differences depending on the degree of the isoseismal area used. Magnitude assignments via epicentral intensity have the highest uncertainties. Geographic regionalization of the relationshipshas been studied but the highest correlations and statistical significance are obtained when we fit all the Ibero-Maghrebian region data. Finally we have used the results obtained in this workto assign magnitude to some important historicalearthquakes in the Ibero-Maghrebian region: the 1755Lisbon earthquake, the 1680 Málaga earthquake, the1829 Torrevieja earthquake and the 1884 Arenas del Reyearthquake. According to our relationships andmethodology we have assigned an Ms value of 9.3 ±0.6 to the 1755 Lisbon earthquake (its mb magnitudecannot be estimated due to the saturation of the mbscale), an mb value of 6.3 ±0.4 and an Ms valueof 6.9 ± 0.6 to the 1829 Torrevieja earthquake, anmb value of 6.2 ± 0.4 and an Ms value of 6.4 ±0.6 to the 1680 Málaga earthquake and an mb valueof 6.1 ± 0.4 and an Ms value of 6.5 ± 0.6 tothe 1884 Arenas del Rey earthquake.

    Notes: Abstract Ligand exchange is one of the possible synthetic routes to obtain99mTc coordination compounds. However, the success of this route depends on the availability of good precursors. The objective of this work is the preparation of the complex [99mTc(tu)6]3+ (tu = thiourea), as a potential precursor for99mTc(III) coordination compounds. The preparation was successfully performed in acidic conditions, the excess of tu serving as reducing agent. At pH values higher than 3, the compound becomes unstable and on addition of polydentate ligands new Tc(III) complexes are formed. With edta, the complex99mTc(III)-edta was obtained in high yield.

    Notes: Abstract Thirteen varieties of Brazilian barley selected for malting qualities were analysed by RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA). Amplification with 18 random primers generated 221 reproducible bands, of which 206 bands were polymorphic (93%):of this number, 137 fragments (62%) detected diversity among varieties and 56 bands (25.34%) allowed the distinction of varieties or groups of them. Variation was detected in all Brazilian varieties studied. Within-variety similarities estimated by Jaccard Similarity Coefficient ranged from 0.28 to 0.94, with averages ranging from 0.57 to 0.83, and an overall average of 0.72. Nevertheless, in the cluster analysis representatives of the same variety always fell into the same group and only later joined the other varieties. The average intervarietal similarities estimated by Jaccard Similarity Coefficient ranged from 0.45 to 0.62, with an overall average of 0.52. Many bands or combinations of bands which were responsible for the differentiation of all varieties were detected. Nevertheless, the majority of these bands cannot be considered as diagnostic markers because a great number of them did not occur in many representatives of the variety or had low intensity or even because they were not easily identified in the total pattern of bands.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with supported nanoparticles of metallic nickel prepared by impregnation of an organometallic colloidal precursor (NiRC complex) on γ-alumina. The obtained supported materials (NiRCS complex) were characterized by STEM, EELS, XRD and TGA and tested in the hydrogenation reaction of benzene and styrene both in the gas and liquid phases. EELS and STEM studies showed that the metallic nickel nanoparticles of the NiRC precursor were well dispersed (1–3 nm) on the support, without size variation during the impregnation step. However, particle growth in NiRCS was observed in samples used after reaction tests. On the other hand, TGA experiments showed that the nickel phase was inserted in an organic matrix which remained in the supported material after impregnation. This organic matrix should be partly removed or totally decomposed by washing with an appropriate solvent or thermal treatment above about 250°C under N2, H2 or air atmosphere respectively. The supported nickel particles were active in the gas phase hydrogenation of benzene in the temperature range of 150–200°C and their activity was enhanced by partial removal of the organic matrix with an organic solvent (e.g. ethanol) or by its total thermal decomposition. They were also found very active in the gas phase hydrogenation of styrene at room temperature. Finally, the supported nickel particles exhibited good hydrogen reservoir properties in organic solvent media.

    Notes: Abstract The determination of the phases assemblages in equilibrium in the CaO–CaO.Al2O3–CaSO4–CaF2 system at 1100°C has been performed. Four assemblages are found and one more is deduced. 3CA.CaSO4 appears in all compatibility tetrahedra in solid state or in melt presence. It is compatible with C3A, C12A7ss, CA, C11A7.CaF2 and the aluminate formed depends on Al2O3 and CaF2 proportion, (cement chemistry abbreviations: C=CaO, A=Al2O3). © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers
