Notes: Abstract Regeneration of tepals, stamens and ovules from perianth explants of Hyacinthus orientalis L. in different developmental stages could be controlled by means of exogenous hormones. Perianth explants in a relatively early stage of development were competent for differentiation of tepals on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2 mg·1-1 N6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) or zeatin and 0.1 mg·1-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Perianth explants in a later stage of development regenerated stamens and ovules, and marked difference was observed in the activity of BAP and zeatin in this regard. Zeatin stimulated more strongly stamen formation, while BAP enhanced ovule formation. Thus, stamens were formed when the explants were cultured for four months on medium with 2 mg·1-1 BAP and 0.1 mg·1-1 2,4-D and then transferred to medium with 0.2 mg·1-1 zeatin and 0.005 mg·1-1 1-naphthaleneacetic acid. On the other hand, differentiation of ovules occured in explants cultured for two weeks on the former medium and then transferred to medium with 0.1 mg·1-1 BAP and 0.01 mg·1-1 2,4-D. Although ovule formation could also be obtained with 2 mg·1-1 BAP alone, it was substantially enhanced by the presence of 0.1 mg·1-1 2,4-D in the medium in the early stages of culture. The results demonstrate the importance of both the developmental stage of the source organ from which explants are excised and of the hormone composition of the medium for the regeneration of different floral organs by perianth explants of Hyacinthus.

Notes: Abstract. Thin layers of hydrogenated amorphous carbon were prepared by using organic hydrocarbon source, xylene (C8H10), in plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. The microstructures were characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared and Raman scattering spectra. The appearance of a sharp vibration signal in 1600 cm-1 strongly suggests the existence of sp2 carbon clusters with aromatic rings. With increasing the deposition rf power, the content of these aromatic structures is increased in the films. In contrast to a broad single PL peak in methane (CH4)-baseda-C:H films, the PL band of xylene-based a-C:H films contains multiple peaks in blue-green light region, which is influenced by rf power. We tentatively attributed it to the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs through some luminescent centers associated with aromatic structures.

Notes: Abstract. Resonant laser ablation (RLA) is a two-step process, occurring within a pulse of a tunable laser, in which the leading edge of the laser pulse ablates a solid surface to produce neutral atoms or molecules that are then resonantly ionized by the trailing edge of the same laser pulse. The sensitivity and selectivity of RLA allow detection and quantitation at very low concentrations. In our preliminary RLA research, a sub-ppm detection level has been reached for copper in a standard aluminium sample. In addition, the threshold and saturation effects of RLA have been observed.

Notes: Abstract. The molecular second-order hyperpolarizabilities β of several series of substituted aromatic compounds have been calculated using the CNDO/S-CI method and perturbation theory. A systematical study was carried out and we found that there was a close relationship between the molecular structure and β. The β value usually increases with the strength of the substituents except for fluoro group. Chloro is amphiprotic in contributing to molecular nonlinearity. Of the donor groups Br, CH3, OCH3 and Cl are the best candidates according to S, which is defined as the criterion of choosing the groups in molecular designing for second-order nonlinear optical materials. The donor-acceptor para-disubstitution is the most effective comparing to the meta- or ortho-disubstitutions, and the contribution of the extending of conjugated system to β is dominant whereas that of the substitutions takes second place.

Notes: Abstract We report for the first time the modulated cyclotron resonance of electrons in the lattice-matched multi-quantum well structures of In0.53Ga0.47As/InP induced by monochromatic light beam of excitation. The resonant enhancement and modulation of the cyclotron resonance of electron due to interband and exciton excitation in the structures have been observed experimentally, which shows the possible prospect of the method for the observation of cyclotron resonances in semiconductors.

Notes: Abstract We report a deductive method used in the incomplete far-infrared reflection spectrum analysis. The inherent restriction between the oscillator model and Kramers-Kronig relation is used to deduct the dielectric constant. In this way, one can analysis the incomplete far-infrared reflection spectrum of a crystal by combining both oscillator model and Kramers-Kronig relation.

Notes: Abstract Baked carbon containing impregnated vanadium may be electrochemically oxidized to CO2 in 1 M H2SO4 at 80–90% current efficiency during prolonged electrolysis (〉20 h) at 70°C under an applied potential of 1.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE). The vanadium is electrocatalytically maintained in the highest oxidation state with an activation energy of 44–80 kJ mol−1 at temperatures up to 80°C.

Notes: Abstract The effects of a low-modulus high-strain interleaf layer, introduced at the midplane, on unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminates under flexural loading were investigated. The apparent energy-to-fail of the laminates increased significantly whereas the maximum load decreased slightly upon interleaving. Real-time microscopic observations during static flexure tests at the lowest deflection rate indicated a dramatic change of failure mode from the dominantly compressive fracture of the baseline laminate to the dominantly tensile fracture process upon interleaving. Failure modes of interleaved and baseline laminates showed no significant changes with test rate in the deflection rate range of 10−6 to 100 m/sec.

Notes: Abstract A general analytical expression is reported for the Drude model's dielectric function of free carrier in multi-valley IV-VI compound semiconductor in the magnetic field. The modifications of the energy band non-parabolicity and free carrier re-population are introduced to the dielectric function in combination with the $$\vec k \cdot \vec P$$ model. The difference of the dielectric function between the modified Drude model and the classical Drude model is demonstrated by the calculation for the typical IV-VI compound semiconductor material PbTe.
