    Notes: Abstract The temperatures and sequence of formation of superconducting phases within the composition Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu4O x were determined using simultaneous differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A single phase high-T c ceramic was obtained by a solid state reaction using predetermined firing conditions, although a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study showed a small amount of glass phase in the grain boundary tripoint regions. The unit cell of the high-T c phase was refined asa=0.5413 nm,b=0.5414 nm,c=3.715 nm. The melting temperature of the high-T c phase is in the region of 852–862°C. The effect of lead was believed to lower the temperature of formation of the high-T c phase. Lead was also found to evaporate from the matrix during and after high-T c phase formation, whereas bismuth was found to be stable in both the low-T c phase and high-T c phase compounds.

    Notes: A series of quaternary (Ti, Al, V) N coating layers were obtained by low temperature reactive plasma sputtering in differing deposition conditions to improve the wear resistance and the biocompatibility of a titanium surgical alloy, specifically Ti-6Al-4V. Characterization of the mechanical properties, structure and the chemical composition of the coating layer was explored by microhardness test, ball against flat wear test, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The biocompatibility of the optimum coating layer (as determined by mechanical performance) was examined by a modified MTT toxicity test and by monitoring cell growth assessed by quantitative stereological analysis. The experimental results are encouraging, indicating that this low temperature deposited, dense, quaternary (Ti, Al, V) N coating layer exhibits improved mechanical properties such as high hardness and excellent adhesion to a Ti alloy substrate and is highly biocompatible.

    Notes: Summary The cytoskeletal proteins of the vertebrate lens fibre cell comprise polypeptides ranging in mol.wt from 43,000 to 250,000 daltons. The main intermediate filament polypeptide of the pickerel, Northern frog, chick, bovine, and human lens has a mol.wt of 54,000 daltons. Peptide analysis revealed that the chick 54,000 dalton protein was more similar to the bovine protein than to the pickerel protein.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Synthese von Sterolen in menschlicher Haut, welche im langwelligen Spektralbereich bestrahlt worden war, wurde mit radioaktiv markiertem Acetyl-Co A, Acetat and Pyruvat geprüft. Von Acetyl-Co A konnte nur geringe Hemmung nachgewiesen werden, während Licht eine merkbare Hemmung von Acetat und Pyruvatinkorporation verursachte. Die Resultate lassen vermuten dass die Acetataktivierung die von Licht beeinflussbare Stufe in der Biosynthese von Sterolen ist.

    Notes: Abstract The molecular structures of 2-nitro, 3-nitro, and 4-nitroaniline and their internal rotational isomers were calculated by anab-initio method using HF/6-31G* basis set. The geometries were influenced by the nitro group's position. The perturbation of the amino group on the nitro group was observed in a 2-nitroaniline isomer having a molecular structure distinct from that of the other two isomers. Among them, 4-nitroaniline is the most stable one. Internal rotation tests of either the nitro or amino group of 3-nitro and 4-nitroaniline indicate that no significant deformations of the phenyl ring occurred after internal rotation; however, the internal rotational isomers of 2-nitroaniline differed from its original structure. Relatively easier internal rotation of the nitro group than the amino group and different C-NO2 and C-NH2 bonds indicate the bond-breaking message of nitroanilines. As products of explosives induced by thermal or shock are of interest, five products of 2-nitroaniline were selected to assess their geometries and energies. The above calculations revealed that these products are thermodynamically unfavorable.

    Notes: Abstract Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (P2ES) of n-CdS single crystals was performed at an open circuit, and in conjunction with photocurrent spectroscopy (PCS) in the presence of an applied ac or dc transverse field. The results showed that P2ES is very sensitive to the presence of deliberately introduced subbandgap defect structures, with the P2E signal dominated by non-radiative de-excitation mechanisms at defect centers. The potential of this technique as a powerful electronic defect diagnostic tool, combined with the overall experimental simplicity, was demonstrated with mm-thick crystals used as received in an open-cell geometry.

    Notes: Abstract Polycrystalline (Tl,Bi)(Sr,Ba)2Ca2Cu3Ox (Tl,Bi-1223) samples were synthesized by mixing the precursor with 5wt% micrometer-size LaAlO3 or LSAT particles. These particles appeared to provide suitable surface for epitaxial growth of Tl,Bi-1223 phase. The growth zone is typically 5 - 10 μm thick and several zones can coalesce to form a larger zone. Consequently, there is a dramatic increase in the magnetization signals, indicating the increased superconducting volume fraction. The enhancement is uniform in the external magnetic field. The Tc of the samples was not affected by the additives and the transition remained sharp. The results suggest that a controlled growth of Tl-1223 grain with improved texture can be achieved by adding the growth centers.

    Notes: Abstract It is commonly known that calcium promotes NO3 - uptake in many crop species. However, calcium enhancement of NH4 + uptake by plants has received little attention. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Ca supplements on NH4 + uptake and plant growth in solution cultured rice. Supplemental Ca applied at vegetative and reproductive phases of plant ontogeny tended to stimulate NH4 + absorption, and accordingly resulted in a better straw and grain yield. However, excessively supplied Ca (400 ppm) was detrimental to plant growth. Increases in straw and grain yield observed at Ca levels up to 300 ppm were linked to the Ca-enhanced activities of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco).

    Notes: Summary Consisting ofPinus massoniana, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Baeckea frutescens andDicranopteris linearis, thePinus scrub community is widespread and representative of the vegetation in Hong Kong. Three areas, with soils derived separately from granite, sedimentary and volcanic rocks but of the same pine community were selected for the present study. Soil samples were collected and analysed for pH, texture, organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Al and H. Plant samples were also collected for the analysis of K, Na, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Fe and SiO2. While variations in chemical and physical properties exist among the soils of different geology, they are invariably acidic with high exchangeable Al and H ions whereas the base saturation is exceedingly low. Intra- and inter-species variations in chemical composition are equally notable. While K, Mg and Ca are the dominant elements of uptake and accumulation, the fernD. linearis also stands out as a strong accumulator of SiO2, Al and to some extent, Mn and Fe.

Relatively easier internal rotation of the nitro group than the amino group and different C–NO2 and C–NH2 bonds indicate the bond-breaking message of nitroanilines. As products of explosives induced by thermal or shock are of interest, five products of 2-nitroaniline were selected to assess their geometries and energies. The above calculations revealed that these products are thermodynamically unfavorable.
