Abstract The dynamic behavior of the laserfrequencies induced by non-linearities of the active medium is investigated experimentally. Measurements were performed in a laser device of high mechanical stability protected against acoustical noise. Results are discussed in the representative 3-mode-case. Combination tones, as predicted byLamb, were directly observed by a coupled optical amplifier with 5 · 103 cps band width. All observed frequencies are classified in a simple energy level diagram containing only the differences between the original laserfrequencies. Simultaneously performed beat frequency measurements agree with the optically determined spacing between combination tones and original laserfrequencies.
