Notes: Abstract Samples of the hermatypic coralGalaxea fascicularis were collected between April 1987 and April 1990 from coral reefs off Singapore (103 °45′E; 1 °13′N). Ca2+-activated adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity was detected in the plasma-membrane-enriched heavy microsomal fraction ofG. fascicularis. The high affinity component hadKm andVmax values of 0.0021 mM and 0.050 µmol Pi mg−1 protein min−1, respectively; corresponding values for the low affinity component were 0.15 mM and 0.85 µmol mg−1 protein min−1. The activity of the high affinity component was inhibited 80 and 50%, respectively, by the anticalmodulin drugs calmidazolium and chlorpromazine. The low affinity component of the Ca2+-ATPase may represent activities of alkaline phosphatase, Ca2+-ATPase from membranes of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, or calmodulin-dissociated plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase resulting from the removal of Ca2+ by EDTA during the isolation process. The high affinity Ca2+-ATPase is probably the enzyme responsible for Ca2+ extrusion from the cells ofG. fascicularis. The high and low affinity components of this Ca2+-ATPase could use ATP and ADP as substrates. Maximum activities of both components were registered at pH 7 and at 45°C. Ruthenium red, a specific inhibitor of Ca2+-ATPase, inhibited the activities of the high and low affinity Ca2+-ATPase by 100 and 60%, respectively. Inhibition of the activities of both components was also observed with sulphydryl reagents (PCMB and mersalyl). However, DCMU, diamox, dinitrophenol, iodoacetate, fluoride, cyanide, ouabain, oligomycin B and L-phenylalanine had no effect on the enzyme activities.

Notes: Abstract A simple and reliable method for extracting DNA has been developed for orchid species and hybrids. The high quality of DNA obtained is suitable for amplification via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for producing random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers.

Notes: Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT) has been playing an important role in specifying the geometry of part features during the product design stage. Tolerance stack analysis is then used to study the conformity of the parts to the tolerance zone. Performing stack analysis is time consuming because geometric tolerances are complex to compute. This paper presents a technique to formulate the bonus and shift tolerances (due to positional callout) and convert them to equal bilateral expressions as in a coordinate tolerance system. An example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the expressions. The usage of the expressions is less conceptual and this makes the application simple and direct. Most importantly, the results are shown to be accurate and reliable.

Notes: Abstract The forward-backward multiplicity correlation over the full pseudorapidity range forpp andp $$\bar p$$ collisions at ISR and Collider energies have been analysed in terms of a Chou-Yang Type multiplicity distribution which consists of a stochastic (binomial) component forz=n F −n B and a nonstochastic (negative binomial) component forn=n F +n B . Reasonable agreement with experimental data is obtained if the final-state particles are assumed, in a cluster model, to be created by the decay of clusters with a mean cluster size (charged particles per cluster) which is energy-dependent.

Notes: In the research described in this paper, an approach that utilizes deep models of features to transform a component design represented by neutral features into domain-specific features has been developed. The neutral features are known as feature-oriented generic shapes (FOGSs). The proposed approach provides the flexibility needed to represent both the deep and shallow knowledge required in feature mapping. A deep model of a feature is represented in the form of a face connectivity graph (FCG) that embodies deep knowledge about its geometry, while other non-geometrical information can be represented as rules or procedural functions. By comparing the original faces of a product model with those of the resultant evaluated boundary model, faces of interest can be easily extracted and described using FCGs. A FCG can then be examined to determine its class and the relevant parameters for applications in such domains as process planning. The mapping shell is designed with layered architecture that makes it highly appropriate for implementation using blackboard technology.

Notes: Abstract The effect of MoO3 addition to alumina supported vanadia catalysts on the catalytic activity for the selective catlaytic reduction of NO is investigated. Upon the addition of MoO3, catalytic activity is enhanced and the particle size of V2O5 which is shown by the results of XRD and Raman spectroscopy is decreased. The MoO3-V2O5/Al2O3 catalyst also exhibits more resistance to SO2 deactivation than V2O5/Al2O3 does.

Notes: Abstract We present a method to calssify electromyogram (EMG) signals which are utilized as control signals for a patient-responsive walker-supported system for paraplegics. Patterns of EMG signals for different walking motions are classified via adequate filtering, real EMG signal extraction, AR-modeling, and a modified self-organizing feature map (MSOFM). In particular, a data-reducing extraction algorithm is employed for real EMG signals. Moreover, MSOFM classifies and determines the results automatically using a fixed map. Finally, the experimental results are presented for validation.
