Notizen: Abstract  Bioelastic protein-based polymers (PBP) have several medical (prevention of post-surgical adhesions) and non-medical (biodegradable plastic) applications. This study compares expression levels of PBP genes (synthetic) integrated into the nuclear genome or the large single-copy (LSC) or inverted repeat (IR) region of the chloroplast genome in transgenic tobacco plants. Polymer transcripts accumulated up to 100-fold higher in the IR plants than in those of nuclear transgenic plants. Integration of foreign genes into all of the chloroplast genomes (homoplasmy) and higher levels of polymer transcripts were observed only in the IR and not in LSC transgenic plants. Expression of the polymer protein was further confirmed by Western blot analysis.

Notizen: Abstract The loss in electrocatalytic activity of Pt particles in carbon matrix electrodes has been experimentally and theoretically investigated as a function of Pt particle size. The measurement of the cathodic potentiostatic current transient showed that a decrease in oxygen reduction current due to carboxyl group formation, relative to the oxygen reduction current in the absence of carboxyl group, increased with a decreasing Pt particle size. This relative value is a measure of the loss in specific activity. A model describing the electrocatalytic activity loss has been proposed by introducing a new parameter, characterising the effective dead active area produced by the carboxyl group formation, relative to the total active area free of the carboxyl group. The agreement of the experimentally determined relative current decrease with the calculated relative value of the effective dead active area confirms the model.

Notizen: Abstract  The surfactant effect on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of thermosensitive poly(organophosphazenes) with methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) and amino acid esters as side groups was examined in terms of molecular interactions between the polyphosphazenes and surfactants including various anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants in aqueous solution. Most of the anionic and cationic surfactants increased the LCST of the polymers: the LCST increased more sharply with increasing length and hydrophobicity of the hydrophobic part of the surfactant molecule. The ΔLCSTs (T 0.03M − T 0M), the change in the LCST by addition of 0 and 0.03 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were found to be 7.0 and 14.5 °C for the polymers bearing ethyl esters of glycine and aspartic acid, respectively. The LCST increase of poly(organophosphazene) having a more hydrophobic aspartic acid ethyl ester was 2 times larger compared with that of the polymer having glycine ethyl ester as a side group. The binding behavior of SDS to the polymer bearing glycine ethyl ester as a hydrophobic group was explained from the results of titration of the polymer solutions containing SDS with tetrapropylammonium bromide. Graphic models for the molecular interactions of polymer/surfactant and polymer/surfactant/salt in aqueous solutions were proposed.

Notizen: Summary An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to cushion the loads transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is essentially an elastomeric hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer surface. The shaft is connected to the suspension and the sleeve is connected to the frame. The elastomeric cylinder provides the cushion when it deforms due to relative motion between the shaft and the sleeve. The relation between the force or moment applied to the shaft or sleeve and the relative displacements or rotations is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A force(moment)-displacement(rotation) relation for elastomeric bushings is important for multibody dynamics numerical simulations. A boundary value problem for the bushing response leads to a relation which requires extensive computation time to implement and is hence unsuitable. In a separate study, a force(moment)-displacement(rotation) relation for single mode response has been proposed which can be used in multi-body dynamics simulations. The relation is expressed in terms of a force (moment) relaxation function for the bushing, and a method for its determination by experiments on bushings has been presented. The applicability of this relation for torsional mode bushing response is evaluated in the present work. A boundary value problem is formulated for torsional mode bushing response. Numerical solutions of the boundary value problem represent the exact bushing response and act as numerically generated experimental data. The proposed moment-rotation relation is constructed using this data. Numerical solutions of the boundary value problem also allow for comparison between the exact moment-rotation behavior and that predicted by the proposed model. It is shown that the method for determining the bushing relaxation function and the predictions of the proposed moment-rotation relation are in very good agreement with the exact results.

Notizen: Abstract Structural fatigue tests are required in engineering practice for safety and reliability. Structural bending and torsional fatigue testing machines were developed. The vibrational characteristics of the machines and components to be tested were investigated analytically, numerically and experimentally to determine the safe region of structural fatigue testing frequencies.

Notizen: Abstract An automated fatigue-testing system was developed for an experimental study on the integrity of the electronic packaging subjected to mechanical vibration. The fatigue-testing machine utilized the electromagnetic device as an actuator. A data acquisition system was developed for the fatigue test of the electronic board. The fixture for the specimen was designed to be suitable for measuring the fatigue life of a typical module/lead/card electronic system subjected to vibration. With this automated fatiguetesting machine, the mechanical integrity of surface mount component with the spider gullwing leads has been studied by a mechanical flexural fatigue test. An experimental method was developed to measure the changes in electrical resistance in the lead, which is used to indicate a fatigue failure. Finally, a relationship between the loading force and the fatigue life of high-cycle region was discussed for the lead of spider gullwing type surface-mounted component. With the relation, the fatigue life of the surface-mounted component (SMC) subjected to vibration environment was predicted successfully.
