    Notes: Summary To study the effects of cirrhosis of the liver on the pharmacokinetics of mexiletine a single i.v. dose of 200 mg was administered to six cirrhotic patients and to six healthy controls. The distribution of mexiletine in both study groups was similar, as indicated by similar values of V1 and Vss, but it tended to occur more slowly in the cirrhotics. The plasma protein binding of mexiletine was unchanged in the patients with cirrhosis. The elimination of mexiletine was markedly retarded in the cirrhotics, as indicated by its lower total clearance (2.31 vs. 8.27 ml/kg/h,) lower total elimination rate constant (0.059 vs 0.353 h−1), and longer elimination half-life (28.7 vs 9.9 h). The antipyrine half-life was 38.3 h in the patients and 14.7 h in the controls. One healthy volunteer had a Morgagni-Stokes-Adams type of syncopal attack 5 min after administration of mexiletine due to disturbance of AV conduction induced by the drug. Thus, on a pharmacokinetic basis the loading dose of mexiletine need not be modified in cirrhotic patients, whereas the maintenance dosage should be reduced to one fourth — one third of the usual dose.

    Notes: Abstract A multilayer hierarchical self-organizing map (HSOM) is discussed as an unsupervised clustering method. The HSOM is shown to form arbitrarily complex clusters, in analogy with multilayer feedforward networks. In addition, the HSOM provides a natural measure for the distance of a point from a cluster that weighs all the points belonging to the cluster appropriately. In experiments with both artificial and real data it is demonstrated that the multilayer SOM forms clusters that match better to the desired classes than do direct SOM's, classical k-means, or Isodata algorithms.

    Notes: Abstract Although large numbers of imageries over planetary surfaces have been aquired by notable space missions over the past twenty years, the versatile technical remote sensing achievements, which have found their long-term and successful applications within the fields of different geosciences, have not been employed in planetology. High resolution imageries allow small-scale surface features to be observed, various filters allow different wavelength bands and surface units of different colour or spectral reflectance to be recorded. Also long-term missions transmit information about multitemporal changes, but such diversified multitemporal surface mapping, as possible by Landsat MSS data, to say nothing of the potential of the Landsat TM and SPOT equipment, are mostly unexecuted. This paper contains an example of the aquatic environment research by computer-assited remote sensing using Landsat MSS data. The western parts of Lake Yli-Kitka, northeastern Finland were studied and mapped according to spectrally identified classes which were improved after field work by associated reclassification. The Landsat classification of open water areas depends on the water quality and depth, or shore distance relations. The recognition of aquatic vegetation complexes is based on the main life-form (helophytic, nymphaeid, isoetid etc.) and the amount of recorded radiation reflected from the chlorophyll (or from other shallow bottom coverage) in respect to the open water surface radiation absorbance within near infrared wavelengths. Aquatic areas are quite featureless in respect to their reflectance, especially in northeastern Finland area studied. The use of wide-channel multispectral satellite data has demonstrated to be valid under quite difficult circumstances. Similar or preferably more up-to-date planetary imagery data could be of high utility value in mapping various surface units of the terrestrial planets and large moons.

    Notes: Abstract The digital remote sensing classification procedure applied to the lakes Pyhäjärvi (near Säkylä), Koskeljärvi and Köyliönjärvi in southwestern Finland is based on spectral reflectances. The aquatic surfaces were divided into five categories consisting of eleven classes connected with water depth, water turbidity, nature of the bottom and the aquatic vegetation. Generalization of this classification over other water areas of different types allowed the authors to evaluate the usefulness, value and accuracy of the classification. All water areas, although representing different types, were rationally categorized into five main types, although some pairs among the eleven classes were slightly confused, or became ambiguous. Hydrolittoral and aquatic Landsat MSS remote sensing seems to be useful for parametric mapping under circumstances in which field data collected from a small number of reference areas are to be extrapolated to apply to other areas within a single MSS frame. Some supplementary test field inspections and background information would be required, however, in order to guarantee that the primary reference areas were representative enough, or if not, to indicate the variety of aquatic areas classified together. With these restrictions, the machine-processed remote sensing would result in a practical and economical mapping procedure which should, as a next step, be developed for temporal studies in view of the longterm nature of the Landsat project.

    Notes: Abstract The isomeric decay of theT 1/2=94 us isomeric state in201Hg was studied in beam via the reaction198Pt(α, n). Gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectra were recorded. From the conversion coefficients, the multipolarities of the two depopulating transitions were determined to beM 2 + 10%E 3 andE 2, respectively. These assignments give the depopulating transitions to be 13/2+ → 9/2− and 9/2− → 5/2−, and these thus substantiate the previous suggestion that the isomeric state hasJ π=13/2+. For the 13/2+ → 9/2− M 2 transition a detailed study ofE 3 andM 4 admixed amplitudes was done. The microscopic properties of the 13/2+ and 9/2− states are discussed, and a comparison to the corresponding ones in199,203,205Hg is made.

    Notes: Abstract Levels of110Cd have been investigated via the96Zr(18O,4n)110Cd reaction by employing the NORD-BALL array of 17 Compton- suppressed Ge detectors. The yrast band has been observed up to I=28 ħ and 14.2 MeV excitation energy with band crossing at ħωc=0.35 MeV. At least three side bands have been constructed. The negative parity bands experience band crossings at ħωc ≈ 0.45 MeV.

    Notes: Summary A group of vectors for luciferase expression in Bacillus subtilis was constructed. So far, only bacterial luciferases have been expressed in Bacillus, but in this study we wanted also to express genes encoding eukaryotic luciferases to perform direct comparisons of the light levels produced by the two different systems in B. subtilis. The vectors constructed can replicate both in Escherichia coli and B. subtilis, and the luciferase expression is strictly regulated due to the dual plasmid system used. Nearly a 100-fold increase in light production compared to previous results was achieved when genes encoding bacterial luciferase were inserted into the constructs and transformed into B. subtilis. An additional tenfold increase in light production was obtained when luciferase genes from the North American firefly (Photinus pyralis) or a click beetle (Pyrophorus plagiophtalamus) were introduced in a similar fashion into B. subtilis. Measurement of the light emission was performed without disruption of bacterial cells in a real-time manner, which is a common feature when working with all of these constructions. Structures of the shuttle vector constructs and results from light emission measurements are presented.
