Notes: Abstract: In this paper we analyze the integral of the star-product of (n+1) Green currents associated to (n+1) global sections of an ample line bundle equipped with a translation invariant metric over an n-dimensional, polarized abelian variety. The integral is shown to equal the logarithm of the Petersson norm of a certain Siegel modular form, which is explicitly described in terms of the given data. This result can be interpreted as evaluating an archimedian height on a family of polarized abelian varieties. The key ingredient to the proof of the main formula is a dd c -variational formula for the integral under consideration. In the case of dimensions n=1,2,3 explicit examples in terms of classical Riemann theta functions are given.

Notes: Abstract We demonstrate for the first time in this study that triadic vesicles derived from skeletal muscle display a voltage dependence of depolarization-induced calcium release similar to that found in intact muscle. We confirm previous studies by Dunn (1989) which demonstrated that changes in extravesicular potassium induced membrane potential changes in isolated transverse tubules with the voltage sensitive dye DiSC(3)-5. Depolarization-induced calcium release was studied in isolated triadic vesicles through similar changes in extravesicular [K] while clamping extravesicular Ca++ to submicromolar concentrations. The amplitude of fast phase of calcium release, identified as depolarizationinduced calcium release, varied with the percentage of transverse tubules in the preparation (determined through 3 H-PN200-110 specific activity) and different levels of depolarization. Threshold activation of calcium release was obtained with a 40.5 mV potential change; maximal calcium release was obtained with a 75 to 81 mV potential change. Boltzmann fits to the normalized depolarization induced calcium release plotted against the membrane potential change yielded a voltage dependence (k = 4.5 mV per e-fold change) very similar to that found in intact muscle (k = 3–4 mV per e-fold change; Baylor, Chandler & Marshall 1978, 1983; Miledi et al., 1981). Substitution of methanesulfonate for propionate as the impermeant ion or addition of valinomycin in the depolarizing solutions had little effect on the voltage dependence of calcium release.

Notes: Abstract Water-soluble polymers crosslinked with metal ions form stable gels that are used in oil and gas production processes. We present an investigation of the chemistry of the binding between guar galactomannans and both borates and titanates using NMR and dynamic light scattering. The two monosaccharides comprising guar — methyl-β-D-galactopyranoside and methyl-α-D-mannopyranoside — have been studied as model compounds. High resolution13C NMR detected complexation of the sugars with borate but displayed no sign of complexation with either of the two titanates even at high titanate concentrations. Dynamic light scattering studies demonstrated the existence of colloidal titanium dioxide particles for both titanate crosslinkers. The loss of free titanium to the colloidal particles reduces the concentration of titanium crosslinking sites to below the detectable limits of NMR. The role of colloidal titanium dioxide colloids in these crosslinking reactions has not been reported previously. Data are presented following the growth of these particles with time as a function of pH and salt concentration. The observed particle growth kinetics explains the observed sensitivity of the guar gelation process to these variables.

Notes: Summary Taste cell responses of hairs on the left front-leg of the blowflyCalliphora vicina Rob. Desv. are classified according to their activity pattern. The activity pattern is characterised by four parameters: maximal spike frequency, time of occurrence of this maximum, adaptation rate and frequency after an infinite length of stimulation-time. As a stimulus a mixture of glucose/fructose, 0.25 M each, is used. Classification of taste cell responses is accomplished by cluster analysis. The result is presented in the dendrogram of Figure 3. Three main clusters are found, two of them being divided into two subclusters. There are remarkable coincidences with morphological and topographical features of the hairs (Fig. 4). Cluster Ia contains all D-type hairs, cluster Ib the 2 ventral B-hairs located distally on tarsomere 5 (formerly called C-type hairs); cluster II contains ventral B-type hairs only; cluster IIIa is dominated by lateral hairs on the left side of the leg and dorsal hairs on proximal tarsi; cluster IIIb is dominated by dorsal taste hairs. Cluster characteristics are presented in Table 4. It is shown that — even within one cluster — the activity pattern is influenced by such factors as tarsomere number, location on the left or the right side of the leg, and proximal or distal location on a tarsomere. There is considerable variability in the response of the hairs on a single leg, and between legs. Part of this variability (see Table 7) is of biological origin, and might be functional. With the methods described a rather complete description of the message sent to the CNS by the chemo-sensory system is technically feasible, which is very promising when it will be combined with behavioural experiments.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is presented for the axial extrusion of an expanding viscoelastic solid inside a long cylindrical tube. Both differential thermal expansion and expansion of gas bubbles in the solid are considered as driving mechanisms. Finite element calculations are used to illustrate the details of the behavior of the system. The response is shown to be initially elastic followed by the development of a boundary layer near the free surface where the pressure gradients are sufficiently large to cause axial viscous flow. Simple boundary layer equations are derived to describe this flow. Results using these equations agree well with the results of the finite element calculations. The theory is applied to the extrusion of uranium-based metallic reactor fuel during overheating transients.

Notes: Abstract Using a neodymium glass laser and time-synchronized pulse detection, second harmonic signals were observed from a number of clay mineral powders. The second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments provide the first physical evidence (other than diffraction patterns) for the polar nature of the kaolinite layer and its stacking sequences. Well-crystallized nacrite and dickite specimens gave signals comparable to those of quartz, but the SHG intensities from the smaller kaolinite and halloysite crystallites were noticeably weaker. Based on results from eight specimens, there appears to be a direct correlation between SHG intensity and particle size, similar to that reported previously for quartz.
