Notizen: Summary Controlled rounding is a procedure that perturbs tabular data collected from respondents in such a way as to preserve the anonymity of the respondents while maintaining the integrity of the data. Controlled rounding techniques are regularly used by the United States Bureau of the Census and its counterparts in other countries. This paper discusses the complexity of the three-dimensional controlled rounding problem. In particular, the three-dimensional, zero-restricted controlled rounding problem is shown to be NP-complete. As zero-restricted controlled roundings may fail to exist, various relaxations of this basic rounding problem have been defined. The paper introduces a sequence of such relaxations and proceeds to address the existence of solutions and complexity issues for the relaxed problems.

Notizen: Abstract Stress and velocity were determined locally by birefringence measurements and laser Doppler velocimetry for a mildly entangled polystyrene solution flowing at steady state in a rectangular channel with sinusoidally varying wall spacing. Having measured both the velocity and stress fields, we were able to test constitutive equations locally, i.e., without solving the equations of motion for the entire flow. Four were examined for the periodic planar extensions on the channel centerplane: the Newtonian model, the Lodge network model, the Doi-Edwards tube model, and the Wagner-Schaeffer modification of Doi-Edwards. High enough Weissenberg and Deborah numbers were reached to produce sizable departures from the Newtonian predictions. The Doi-Edwards model underpredicted the stress, as did Wagner-Schaeffer, although to a lesser extent. Predictions of the Lodge model were best of all, a surprising result in view of its inadequacy for simple shear deformations. The predictions of the Lodge model, without parameter adjustment, agreed remarkably well with the planar extension data over the accessible range for our apparatus: Deborah numbers up to 2.0, extensional Weissenberg numbers up to 6.5, and a maximum extension ratio of about 2.3.

Notizen: Abstract We report on the response of high-latitude ionospheric convection during the magnetic storm of March 20–21 1990. IMP-8 measurements of solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), ionospheric convection flow measurements from the Wick and Goose Bay coherent radars, EISCAT, Millstone Hill and Sondrestrom incoherent radars and three digisondes at Millstone Hill, Goose Bay and Qaanaaq are presented. Two intervals of particular interest have been identified. The first starts with a storm sudden commencement at 2243 UT on March 20 and includes the ionospheric activity in the following 7 h. The response time of the ionospheric convection to the southward turning of the IMF in the dusk to midnight local times is found to be approximately half that measured in a similar study at comparable local times during more normal solar wind conditions. Furthermore, this response time is the same as those previously measured on the dayside. An investigation of the expansion of the polar cap during a substorm growth phase based on Faraday’s law suggests that the expansion of the polar cap was nonuniform. A subsequent reconfiguration of the nightside convection pattern was also observed, although it was not possible to distinguish between effects due to possible changes in By and effects due to substorm activity. The second interval, 1200–2100 UT 21 March 1990, included a southward turning of the IMF which resulted in the Bz component becoming -10 nT. The response time on the dayside to this change in the IMF at the magnetopause was approximately 15 min to 30 min which is a factor of \sim2 greater than those previously measured at higher latitudes. A movement of the nightside flow reversal, possibly driven by current systems associated with the substorm expansion phases, was observed, implying that the nightside convection pattern can be dominated by substorm activity.

Notizen: Abstract  In channels with dimensions much less than 1 mm, fluids with viscosities similar to or higher than that of water and flowing at low velocities exhibit laminar behavior. This allows the adjacent flow of fluids and particles in a channel without mixing other than by diffusion. We demonstrate here the use of a 3-input microfluidic device known as a T-Sensor for the analysis of blood. A sample solution (e.g. whole blood), a receptor solution (e.g. an indicator solution), and a reference solution (a known analyte standard) are introduced into a common channel (T-Sensor), and flow side by side until they leave the structure. Smaller particles such as ions or small proteins diffuse rapidly across the fluid boundaries, whereas larger molecules diffuse more slowly. Large particles (e.g. blood cells) show no significant diffusion within the time the flow streams are in contact. Two interface zones are formed between the fluid layers. The ratio of a property (e.g. fluorescence intensity) of the outer portions of the two interface zones is a function of the concentration of the analyte, and is largely free of cross-sensitivities to other sample components and instrument parameters. This device allows, for example, one-time or continuous monitoring of the concentration of analytes in microliters of whole blood without the use of membranes or prior removal of blood cells. The principle is illustrated by the determination of pH and human albumin in whole blood and serum. Results are also presented for zero-gravity experiments performed with a T-Sensor on board a NASA experimental plane. Due to its microfluidic flow characteristics, a T-Sensor functions independently of orientation and strength of the gravitational field. This was demonstrated by exposing a T-Sensor to variations in gravity from 0 to 1.8 g in a NASA KC135A plane flying repetitive parabolic flight curves.

Notizen: Summary AnEscherichia coli strain containing a recombinant plasmid encoding the pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase genes fromZymomonas mobilis metabolized glucose and xylose to near theoretical yields of ethanol. Enzyme activity measurements indicate high expression levels of both plasmid-encodedZymomonas proteins in the recombinantE. coli. The expression inE. coli is under the control of a promoter in theZymomonas sequence upstream of the pyruvate decarboxylase gene. The maximum ethanol level, using 4% glucose as substrate, was 1.8% (w/v) in anaerobic conditions. In aerobic conditions the natural repression ofE. coli alcohol dehydrogenase results in less ethanol production from clones expressing onlyZymomonas pyruvate decarboxylase.

Notizen: Abstract. The technique of X-ray diffraction has been successfully applied to enzymes associated with peptidoglycan biosynthesis. The technique has taught us a great deal about the structures and catalytic mechanisms of penicillin-binding proteins and β-lactamases. An insight into the structural basis for antibiotic resistance is given.

Notizen: Abstract. Reactive oxygen species and alterations in membrane lipid homeostasis are thought to be important events in aging process and aging-related degenerative diseases. The peroxisome is a small cellular organelle involved in both oxygen and lipid metabolism, and defects in peroxisomal function are associated with major, and often fatal, changes at the neurological level during human development. Recent reports of aging-related changes in peroxisomal function raised the hypothesis that peroxisomes may also have a significant role in the aging process and aging-related degenerative diseases. This review presents the current data on changes in peroxisomal function during aging and discusses the implications of these changes for health.

Notizen: Summary The problem of confirming lower bounds on the number of coalitions for which an individual is pivoting is NP-complete. Consequently, the problem of confirming non-zero values of power indices is NP-complete. The problem of computing the Absolute Banzhaf index is #P-complete. Related problems for power indices are discussed.
