Notes: Summary The disposition of propranolol stereoisomers after administration of a single oral dose of the racemic drug was investigated in seven hyperthyroid patients before and after antithyroid drug therapy. The possibility of hypersensitivity to propranolol in the patients was evaluated by constructing plasma propranolol concentration — beta-blocking effect curves. There was no statistically significant difference in elimination half-life (t1/2) between (±)- and (−)-propranolol before and after antithyroid drug therapy. However, the plasma clearance ( $$\dot V_p $$ ) of (−)-propranolol was smaller than that of (±)-propranolol, and the difference was statistically significant after antithyroid drug therapy. Decreased $$\dot V_p $$ was observed in 3 aged hyperthyroid patients compared to the value after antithyroid drug therapy. $$\dot V_p $$ decreased or did not change in young patients after therapy. No significant difference was observed in the relationship between the tilt-induced pulse rate response and plasma propranolol concentration when treated patients became euthyroid compared to their response in the hyperthyroid state.

Notes: Abstract A method of motion control as well as shape optimization is proposed for the preliminary design of a suitlike flexible arm, which is composed of some variable-length and fixed-length beams. The large deformation, variable geometry and motion of the flexible structure are calculated by dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) using the step by step time integration method. A neural-networks-inverse-model, which learns nonlinear behaviour of the flexible structure, has been applied for the motion control as an inverse model of the flexible arm. For this geometrically nonlinear structure and time response problem, the optimum shape of the cross-section has been calculated under constraints of stress, stiffness and minimum weight with FEA and sensitivity analysis combined with fuzzy rules. This method has been applied for the design of a flexible arm, which simulates a process of lifting a human body and moving it. The calculated optimum shape has a much higher stiffness with decrease in weight in comparison with the initial shape. Moreover, the calculated motion agrees well with the one aimed for and the flexible arm reduces the impact force.

Notes: Abstract We have developed a high energy, high resolution monochromatic x-ray computed tomography system using synchrotron radiation. Our system is installed in a vertical wiggler beamline at the Photon Factory of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics that can produce high brilliance x-rays in the high energy region. At the present stage, we have obtained monochromatic x-rays up to 75 keV, succeeded in taking computed tomography images of materials up to 50 keV with large absorption coefficients that could not be imaged by conventional methods, and observed three-dimensional fine structures in such materials. When the K-edge subtraction method was applied, the system could quantitatively and nondestructively measure the trace distribution of a specific element in the object of interest. In this paper we introduce the experimental system, mainly the crystal monochromator, evaluate the results, and discuss the performance of the system.

Notes: Abstract Analysis of proteins in nucleoli and chromatin of mouse ascites tumor cells labeled with [32P]orthophosphate by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that a highly radioactive protein was localized in the nucleoli. This protein was purified and the final preparation appeared as a single component on hydroxylapatite column chromatography with or without SDS. This protein was found to be a nucleolus-specific phosphoprotein with a molecular weight of 120 000. The phosphate moiety in this protein turned over very rapidly whereas the protein itself was stable. When the nucleoli were disrupted by EDTA treatment, this unique protein was found as a major protein constituent of the ultracentrifugal supernatant.

Notes: Abstract Tensile tests on cast Sn-Pb eutectic alloy have been carried out at 25, 100, 140, 170°C and several strain rates ranging from 7×10−3−7×10−5s−1. The stress-strain curves obtained were strongly dependent on strain rate and temperature. Under the conditions tested, higher strainrates gave a higher stress-strain curve and a larger strain at fracture. The tensile strength may be expressed by a power function of strain rate whose exponent and coefficient are governed by a kind of Arrhenius' equation. The nominal stress-strain curves showed significant work softening due to diffuse necking; however, the true stress-strain curve exhibited slight work softening. Thus the elastic perfectly viscoplastic model can be applied to the solder.

Notes: Abstract Intestinal transport of sulfanilic acid was examined by means of an in vitro everted sac technique in rats immunized with a bovine γ-globulin–sulfanilic acid conjugate. At a low concentration of sulfanilic acid, the intestinal transport of sulfanilic acid was decreased in rats immunized with bovine γ-globulin–sulfanilic acid conjugate. This phenomenon was dose dependent and antigen specific, since there was no difference in the transport of sulfanilic acid at a high concentration and of an unrelated hapten. These results suggested that parenteral immunization impaired not only the intestinal transport of macromolecular antigens, as previously shown, but also the transport of the low molecular weight hapten, sulfanilic acid.
