Notes: Summary Unlike the previously reported inhibitory effect of histamine on the production of the lymphokine, migration inhibitory factor, histamine did not inhibit the production of macrophage aggregating factor (MAgF). By contrast, both prostaglandin E2 and hydrocortisone inhibited MAgF production, in a dose-dependant manner.

Notes: Abstract Methods of incubation are taxonomically important in Spirorbinae. About half of the known species incubate in the operculum, but the remainder are usually described simply as “incubating within the tube”. Studies of tube incubation show that the embryos are anchored in various ways. They form an egg string, which is attached to the tube by a posterior filament in Spirorbis and Spirorbella; they adhere more generally to the tube wall in Circies and Paradexiospira; they are attached to specialised thoracic stalks in Protolaeospira, Helicosiphon and Romanchella; they adhere to the body surface in Metalaeospira and probably in Eulaeospira; they are not attached to either body or tube in Paralaeospira. Tube incubation is found predominantly in temperate or cold waters. In most species from the southern hemisphere, embryos are anchored to the bodies of the parents, but in most species from the northern hemisphere, embryos are fixed to the walls of the parent tubes.

Notes: Abstract Five Antarctic or south-temperate species of Spirorbiaae are centred in south-west Africa, whilst 6 tropical species extend round the south-east and another 4 are recorded from Mozambique. Of the three new species, Pileolaria (Pileolaria) annectans sp. n. has a rudimentary opercular plate surmounting a sort-walled sac of embryos, which somewhat resembles a “thoracic brood pouch”. Pileolaria (Pileolaria) dayi sp. n. has a helmet-like brood chamber, but this opens distally, like the brood cups found in the subgenus Duplicaria. Janua Pil-natalensis sp. n. has the dorsal collar folds usually separate, but partially fused in some juveniles.

Notes: Abstract Platinum-group minerals (PGM) have been identified as inclusions in chromite from the Bird River Sill, Manitoba. The inclusions are small (〈20 microns) and are commonly euhedral. The PGM inclusions are (Ru, Os, Ir) S2, laurite, and (Os, Ir, Ru alloy), rutheniridosmine: Laurites contain up to 2.99 wt. % palladium. Arsenic content is negligible and no platinum or rhodium has been detected. One platinum-group element alloy contains 0.96 wt. % rhodium but neither platinum nor palladium has been detected. Laurite inclusions in chromite from the ultramafic zone record two compositional trends; first increasing and then decreasing Ru/(Ru+Os+Ir) up section. PGM inclusions and other solid inclusions occur as discrete phases in chromite and are part of the chromite precipitation event. Increasing oxygen fugacity by wall rock assimilation or new magma injection initiates chromite precipitation, locally increasing the sulphur content of the magma to convert PGE alloys to sulphides.

Notes: Summary The two markers most closely linked to the myotonic dystrophy (DM) locus on chromosome 19 are the gene that codes for apolipoprotein CII (APOC2) and the anonymous probe D19S19 (LDR152). Both of these markers show tight linkage to DM, with maximum lod scores of〉20 at recombination fractions of less than 0.05. We have identified, in a family in which DM segregates, an affected individual where a meiotic recombination event has occurred in which both of these linked markers have crossed over with the gene defect. This demonstrates that APOC2 and D19S19 are probably on the same side of DM.

Notes: Abstract While T cells from SJL and from F1 hybrids of SJL that do not express I-E antigens give strong proliferative responses to RCS, T cells from F1 hybrids expressing surface I-E do not. The nature of the stimulating antigen on the RCS cell surface was examined using monoclonal antibodies. Complete inhibition of the T-cell proliferative response was obtained with antibodies to I-A antigens, whereas antibodies to I-E antigens did not inhibit at all. This inhibition was mediated via an effect of the antibodies on the stimulating cells. Biochemical characterization of immunoprecipitated 125I- and 's S-labeled RCS antigens was performed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Using this technique, I-A antigens were readily detected. However, neither Ia.7-specific antibodies nor antibodies specific for Eα : E β complexes precipitated any E alpha or E beta chains. Comparison of I-A antigens from RCS and normal SJL spleen cells revealed minor mobility differences in the gels, possibly due to differences in glycosylation, the significance of which needs to be further evaluated. Examination of RNA extracted from RCS, using E alpha and A alpha cDNA probes showed that RCS cells do not transcribe the E alpha gene as has been shown previously for normal H-2 s cells. Furthermore, DNA from RCS cells showed a defect in the E alpha gene similar to that known to exist in normal H-2 s cells. Our findings exclude the presence of E alpha on RCS cells and suggest a major role for I-A, either alone or in conjunction with another as yet unidentified cell surface antigen, in the stimulation of T cells.

Notes: Summary In a double blind, randomised trial, the effects of 1 g aspirin and 1 g paracetamol were compared on bleeding time and platelet aggregation in 40 volunteers (20 females). Also investigated was the relationship between plasma aspirin esterase activity and both bleeding time and platelet aggregation after aspirin. Following 1 g aspirin there was a significant increase in bleeding time at 24 h (p〈0.01). A significant reduction (P〈0.01) in platelet aggregation with collagen was observed at 1, 6 and 24 h after aspirin, but no significant reduction (P〉0.05) was observed with ADP. Paracetamol had no effect on bleeding time or platelet aggregation. Plasma aspirin esterase activity ranged from 0.26–0.6 µmol/ml/min. A significant negative correlation (R=−0.55, P〈0.001) was observed between percentage increase in bleeding time (24 h) and plasma aspirin esterase activity. Further significant correlations were observed between plasma aspirin esterase activity and change in platelet aggregation with collagen at 1 h (R=0.68, P〈0.001), 6 h (R=−0.73, P〈0.001) and 24 h (R=−0.67, P〈0.001). These results suggest that it might be possible to predict an individual's haemostatic response to aspirin from knowledge of their plasma aspirin esterase activity.

Notes: Summary Platinum-group mineral, silicate and other solid and fluid inclusions occur in disseminated and massive chromite in a variety of lithologies from ophiolitic and other mafic-ultramafic complex-types. The inclusions are small (〈250 microns) and randomly distributed throughout their host. Silicate inclusions are modally more abundant than the other inclusion types. Platinum-group mineral phases are ruthenium-rich sulphides and PGE alloys are osmium-rich. Mafic silicates (olivine, pyroxenes, pargasitic-amphiboles, micas) are magnesium-, titanium-, and alkali-rich and felsic silicates are sodium-rich (albite, nepheline). The intimate association of these inclusions with chromite suggests that their origin must be considered within a chromite crystallization model. A hypothesis of origin is suggested wherein the platinum-group minerals and silicates are trapped as discrete, crystalline euhedral phases and silicate liquid during the precipitation of chromite. The similarity of physical characteristics, modal mineralogy and chemical compositions indicates that this model may be applicable to all mafic-ultramafic complex-types.
