Notes: Summary Twenty-four hypertensive patients have been studied. All had blood pressure recordings greater than 160/95 mmHg on 3 occasions whilst taking a beta blocker and two other antihypertensive agents in therapeutic doses. Compliance was checked by intermittent urine analysis for the relevant beta-blocker. These difficult to control hypertensives were treated with nadolol alone, nadolol plus indapamide and nadolol plus xipamide each for 2 months in random order. The aim was to reduce the blood pressure to below 160/95 mmHg. The supine blood pressure on nadolol alone (167/100 mmHg) was comparable to that on the previous three drug regimens (157/100 mmHg), the other two treatments were more effective (145/90 and 148/93 mmHg respectively). Hypokalaemia (serum potassium below 3.5 mmol/l) occurred in six individuals but occurred more frequently on xipamide than on indapamide.

Notes: Abstract We consider the enumeration of the three-connected triangulations of the disk, with a reflective symmetry about a line. The asymptotic behavior is unlike that observed for rooted maps or for maps having rotational symmetry.

Notes: Summary This paper presents a comparison of column water vapor (CWV) information derived from both infrared measurements as part of the TIROS-N Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) in an attempt to assess the relative merits of each kind of data. From the analyses presented in this paper, it appears that both types of satellite data closely reproduce the bulk climatological relationships introduced in earlier studies using different data. This includes both the bulk relationship between CWV and the sea surface temperature and the annual variation of CWV over the world's oceans. The TOVS water vapor data tends to be systematically smaller than the SSM/I data and when averaged over the ocean covered regions of the globe this difference is between 2–3 kgm−2. Using a cloud liquid water threshold technique to establish clear sky values of SSM/I water vapor, we conclude that the differences between TOVS and SSM/I are largely a result of the clear sky bias in TOVS sampling except in the subsidence regions of the subtropics. The clear sky bias is considerably smaller than previously reported and we attribute this improvement to the new physical retrieval scheme implemented by NOAA NESDIS. While there is considerable agreement between the two types of satellite data, there are also important differences. In regions where there is drying associated with large scale subsidence of the atmosphere, the TOVS CWV's are too moist relative to both radiosonde and SSM/I data and this difference may exceed 10 kgm−2. The explanation for this difference lies in the limitations of infrared radiative transfer. By contrast, in regions of deep convection, such as in the ITCZ, TOVS CWV is systematically lower than the SSM/I CWV. Both TOVS and SSM/I data demonstrate similar kinds of gross effects of large scale circulation on the water vapor except in these subsidence regions where TOVS data leads to an under-prediction of the effects of subsidence drying.

Notes: Abstract 1. Nerve cord transection abolishes the ability of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) to produce tailflips in response to gradually applied tactile or proprioceptive stimulation of the abdomen, but this ability eventually returns. To determine the time-course of this return and to analyze its underlying neural pathways, we made behavioral observations, electromyographic recordings from abdominal phasic flexor muscles, and intracellular recordings from motoneurons in crayfish with cord lesions between the thorax and the abdomen. 2. Abdominal stimulation activated the phasic flexor muscles in the rostral 5 abdominal segments and their homologs in the 6th segment, the posterior telson flexor muscles. Nearly one-quarter of cord-transected animals responded to the stimuli with phasic flexor muscle activity by one week after the lesion, and almost 90% were responsive by 3 weeks. 3. Regeneration of axons across the lesion played little or no role in the recovery of phasic flexor muscle responsiveness. In addition, the lateral giant axons were not activated by the gradually applied stimuli that triggered phasic flexor muscle contractions. These results suggest that non-giant pathways confined to the abdominal nervous system become functional following chronic cord transection. 4. Retransection of the nerve cord below the original lesion showed that smaller subsets of the abdominal cord, including a single ganglion, could develop the ability to generate phasic flexor muscle contractions in response to gradually applied stimuli. 5. Phasic flexor motoneurons in cord-transected animals could be excited by stimulation of afferents throughout the abdomen. The sensory pathways producing this activation appear to project through the nerve cord without much cross-over between left and right sides.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the plutonium assay method that uses the plutonyl trinitrate tetrapropyl-ammonium ion-pair solvent extraction with spectrophotometry of the extract as a candidate method capable of providing robustness and precision. To identify and assess the effect of factors on the precision, we looked at sampling techniques, silver oxide oxidation conditions extraction time, extract stability, and temperature dependence of the extract analytical peak height and position. We obtained a precision of 0.12%.

Notes: Abstract The uranium spectrophotometric measurement using the uranylnitrate-quaternaryamine solvent extraction method is investigated to identify factors that affect precision and accuracy of the uranium determination. The inherent spectrophotometric precision was measured with neutral density filters in the sample light path and was found to be 〈0.1% relative standard deviation (RSD). Under selected experimental conditions, temperature instability has a −0.02% effect on the extraction, and a −0.4% effect on the absorbance of the uranium extract in 2-nitropropane (2-NP) or methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) solvents. Under optimum conditions at the 10 mg uranium level, RSDs of ∼0.1% resulted.

Notes: Abstract Field evidence and fluid inclusion studies on South Indian incipient charnockites suggest that charnockite formation occurred during a decompressional brittle regime following the ‘peak’ of metamorphism and regional deformation. The most abundant type of inclusions in quartz and garnet grains in these charnockites contain high-density carbonic fluids, although lower-density fluids occur in younger arrays of inclusions. Discrete fluid inclusion generations optically are observed to decrepitate over well-defined temperature intervals, and quantitative measurements of CO2 abundance released from these inclusions by stepped thermal decrepitation show up to a four-fold increase (by volume) in the incipient charnockites relative to the adjacent gneisses from which they are derived. Studies based on optical thermometry, visual decrepitation and stepped-heating inclusion release together indicate that entrapment of carbonic fluids coincided with charnockite formation. We confirm that an influx of carbon dioxide-rich fluids is associated with the amphibolite-granulite transition, as recorded by the incipient charnockites, the remnants of which are commonly preserved as the earliest generation of high-density fluid inclusions.

Notes: Abstract The partition functionZ N , for Hermitian-complex matrix models can be expressed as an explicit integral over ℝ N , whereN is a positive integer. Such an integral also occurs in connexion with random surfaces and models of two dimensional quantum gravity. We show thatZ N can be expressed as the product of two partition functions, evaluated at translated arguments, for another model, giving an explicit connexion between the two models. We also give an alternative computation of the partition function for theφ 4-model. The approach is an algebraic one and holds for the functions regarded as formal power series in the appropriate ring.
