Notes: Summary We describe a histological clearing procedure involving partial tissue hydrolysis by pancreatin and demonstrate its application. Changes in distribution of 5.7-μm latex particles in mouse liver and heart muscle 6 months after i.v. latex injection were quantitated. The method is useful for studies of long-term redistribution of particles in vivo and for locating large, infrequent particles which are difficult to find by ordinary tissue-sectioning techniques.

Notes: Abstract The prodissoconch morphology of an unclassified mytilid from a hydrothermal vent on the Galápagos Rift indicates the presence of a planktotrophic larval stage with longrange dispersal capabilities. Recorded abyssal currents are probably sufficient to transport such larvae hundreds of kilometers. It is suggested that one or more aspects of the unusual biological or physico-chemical conditions (such as high microbial densities, elevated water temperatures, and hydrogen sulfide concentrations) encountered at vents, provide a stimulus to larval settlement. Such a behavioral response, perhaps coupled with a “gregarious settling” response, would provide a means of concentrating relatively sedentary organisms in and around these restricted, geographically isolated regions.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. The notion ’architecture' is interpreted manifold in the workflow management area. Therefore, the discussion of architectures for workflow management systems is difficult. This article introduces three different interpretations of the notion ’architecture'. In detail, the implementation-oriented interpretation of architecture is presented which is considered to be most important. A phase model for the development of a workflow management system architecture and a layered design model of a workflow management system are shown finally.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Notes: Abstract To enlarge the field of application for polyester vascular prostheses in order to restore small-diameter vessels, original collagenic-based composites have been developed in our laboratory. The polyester knit of standard prostheses has been modified by radiochemical grafting of the Type I collagen-based matrix. In order to check the properties of this new coating, biological tests have been carried out. We noticed that on modified surfaces: fibrinogen adsorption is less important than albumin adsorption; only 50% platelets interact actively with the modified material in comparison with the other materials; the coating is more resistant to enzymatic degradation; and there is partial denaturation of the collagen but this collagen is still specifically recognized by Type I collagen antibody.

Notes: Abstract We describe a new extinct subspecies of the Javan lutung—Trachypithecus auratus sangiranensis—based on an isolated, tooth-bearing upper jaw. The specimen was in volcanic breccia situated between the Lower Pucangan and the Upper Kalibeng Formations 500 m south of the village of Sangiran, near Surakarta, central Java, Indonesia. The new fossil monkey bears morphological similarities to the two living species of leaf monkey from Java, Presbytis comata comata and Trachypithecus auratus auratus, and to the Middle Pleistocene form, Trachypithecus cristatus [=auratus] robustus, from Tegoean, central Java. It is significantly larger than any of these forms, and differs from them in details of dental anatomy. Because the greatest number of similarities are between the new fossil and Trachypithecus auratus subspecies, we designated the specimen as T. a. sangiranensis. The geochronological age of the breccia from which the fossil came, is 1.9± 0.05 Ma (million years), making T. a. sangiranensis one of the oldest fossil monkeys from eastern Asia.

Notes: Abstract Predicting the course of parathormone (PTH)-elicited bone turnover in both humans and experimental rat models with moderate chronic uremia, using only standard clinical chemistry analyses, is often difficult. Consequently, rat bone from 1+2/3 nephrectomized animals, after 230 days of progressive renal failure, was examined for PTH-stimulated adenylate cyclase (AC) and phospholipase C (PLC) activities. Correlations to biological parameters related to the function of bone and kidney were made. Reduced renal function was demonstrated by increased serum creatinine; circulating 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 below detection level; diminished renal PTH-elicited AC activity; and decreased urinary cAMP excretion. PTH-activated renal PL-C was also reduced. However, no significant differences were seen in urine creatinine, calcium, phosphate, and hydroxyproline, nor in serum PTH, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphate. Notwithstanding, renal osteodystrophy developed as estimated by increased plasticity of the long bones, as well as reduction of the diaphyseal (Dd) and inner femoral midshaft (Di) diameters. Femoral cancellous bone exhibited a substantial elevation of both eroded surface (ES) and osteoid surface (OS) as well as a marked reduction in trabecular bone volume (TBV). Calvarial PTH-activated AC was enhanced, whereas corresponding PL-C was markedly reduced. PTH-enhanced AC correlated positively with ES and negatively with Di, respectively. PTH-enhanced PL-C, however, correlated positively with bone calcium content and negatively with ES. Our results indicate that bone modeling and remodeling are to a large extent related to PTH-elicited signaling systems, and cannot easily be predicted by standard clinical chemistry analyses.

Notes: Abstract We have previously established an uremic rat model which is suitable for investigating the effect of various treatment modalities on the progression of renal osteodystrophy [1]. Four months subsequent to 5/6 nephrectomy, animals were treated three times a week for 3 months with either vehicle, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3], 1,25(OH)2D3+24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [24,25(OH)2D3], 1,25(OH)2D3+calcitonin (CT), or 1,25(OH)2D3+ 24,25(OH)2D3+CT. At termination of the study, clinical chemistry, chemical composition, and mechanical properties of femurs, calvarial parathyroid hormone (PTH)-elicited adenylate cyclase (AC), and phospholipase C (PL-C) activities, femoral cross-sectional area, and bone histomorphometry were analyzed. The main findings were that 1,25(OH)2D3±24,25(OH)2D3 treatment enhanced elasticity as well as time to fracture at the femoral metaphysis. CT potentiated the increase in elasticity obtained by 1,25(OH)2D3±24,25(OH)2D3 treatment. Only 24,25(OH)2D3 administration rectified the supernormal PTH-stimulated uremic bone AC, and only 1,25(OH)2D3 medication normalized the diminished CT-elicited AC. The obliterated uremic bone PTH-sensitive PL-C was fully normalized by all drug regimens. Femoral shaft inner zone diameter was enhanced by uremia, however, all drug treatments normalized it. Ditto effect was registered with either drug treatment on the subnormal outer and inner zone widths. Histomorphometrical analyses showed that 1,25(OH)2D3 administration reduced both eroded and osteoid surfaces. Most prominently, adjuvant 24,25(OH)2D3 or CT administration potentiated the beneficial effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on fibrosis and osteomalacia. We assert that vitamin D3 treatment markedly reverses the development of renal osteodystrophy, and CT potentiates the effect of vitamin D3.

Notes: Abstract A series of controlled pore glasses (CPG) was made from the same raw glass by means of different chemical and thermal treatments. BET specific area, selectivity of cesium adsorption in relation to sodium, ionosorption capacity under dynamic conditions of these CPG were measured and potentiometric titrations carried out. σ0 vs. pH curves show i.e.p. and c.i.p. values similar to those for silica. KOH treatment leads to increase of BET specific surface but ionosorption capacity is decreased.
