    Notes: Summary We have used interspecific grafts between Xenopus borealis and Xenopus laevis to study the signalling system that produces tail mesoderm. Early gastrula ectoderm grafted into the posterior neural plate region of neurulae responds to a mesodermal inducing signal in this region and forms mainly tail somites; this signal persists until at least the early tail bud stage. Ventral ectoderm grafted into the posterior neural plate loses its competence to respond to this signal after stage 10 1/2. We have established the specification of anterior and posterior neural plate ectoderm. In ectodermal sandwiches or when grafted into unusual positions, anterior regions gave rise to mainly nervous system and posterior regions to large amounts of muscle, together with some nervous system. Thus it was impossible to assess the competence of posterior neural plate ectoderm to form further mesoderm and hence to establish if mesodermal induction continues during neurulation in unmanipulated embryos.

    Notes: Abstract Methods of incubation are taxonomically important in Spirorbinae. About half of the known species incubate in the operculum, but the remainder are usually described simply as “incubating within the tube”. Studies of tube incubation show that the embryos are anchored in various ways. They form an egg string, which is attached to the tube by a posterior filament in Spirorbis and Spirorbella; they adhere more generally to the tube wall in Circies and Paradexiospira; they are attached to specialised thoracic stalks in Protolaeospira, Helicosiphon and Romanchella; they adhere to the body surface in Metalaeospira and probably in Eulaeospira; they are not attached to either body or tube in Paralaeospira. Tube incubation is found predominantly in temperate or cold waters. In most species from the southern hemisphere, embryos are anchored to the bodies of the parents, but in most species from the northern hemisphere, embryos are fixed to the walls of the parent tubes.

    Notes: Abstract Ascospore appendages of 18 marine Ascomycetes, belonging to the genera Amylocarpus, Carbosphaerella, Corollospora, Eiona, Emericellopsis, Haligena, Halosphaeria, Lulworthia, Remispora and Torpedospora, were examined with the scanning electron microscope. A number of basic types of spore appendage development are recognised. The significance of these observations to the taxonomy of marine Ascomycetes, and especially the Halosphaeriaceae, is discussed. Remispora is considered a valid genus and not a synonym of Halosphaeria. Both Corollospora and Halosphaeria are considered to be an assemblage of disparate species. The establishment of new genera is considered premature until material of other species has been re-examined. The ontogeny and structure of spore appendages are considered useful taxonomic criteria at the specific and generic level.

    Notes: Abstract Five Antarctic or south-temperate species of Spirorbiaae are centred in south-west Africa, whilst 6 tropical species extend round the south-east and another 4 are recorded from Mozambique. Of the three new species, Pileolaria (Pileolaria) annectans sp. n. has a rudimentary opercular plate surmounting a sort-walled sac of embryos, which somewhat resembles a “thoracic brood pouch”. Pileolaria (Pileolaria) dayi sp. n. has a helmet-like brood chamber, but this opens distally, like the brood cups found in the subgenus Duplicaria. Janua Pil-natalensis sp. n. has the dorsal collar folds usually separate, but partially fused in some juveniles.

    Notes: Abstract The ultrastructure of the genera Althornia, Aplanochytrium, Japonochytrium, Schizochytrium and Thraustochytrium is described, and all are regarded as members of the new order Thraustochytriales Sparrow. Species considered are Althornia crouchii, Aplanochytrium kerguelensis, Hyalochlorella marina, Japonochytrium sp., Schizochytrium aggregatum, Thraustochytrium kinnei and T. striatum. All but H. marina are, on ultrastructural evidence, related genera, and some speculative suggestions are made about possible interrelationships both between the species discussed, between the Thraustochytriales and Labyrinthulales, and between these two and other major taxa.

    Notes: Abstract  A bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) contig was constructed across the proximal part of the H2-M region from the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) of mouse strain 129 (H2 bc ). The contig is composed of 28 clones that span approximately 1 megabasepair (Mb), from H2-T1 to Mog, and contains three H2-T genes and 18 H2-M genes. We report the fine mapping of the H2-M class I gene cluster, which includes the previously reported M4-M6, the M1 family, the M10 family, and four additional class I genes. All but two of the H2-M class I genes are conserved among haplotypes H2 k , H2 b , and H2 bc , and only two genes are found in polymorphic HindIII fragments. Six evolutionarily conserved non-class I genes were mapped to a 180 kilobase interval in the distal part of the class I region in mouse, and their order Znf173-Rfb30-Tctex5-Tctex6-Tctex4-Mog was found conserved between human and mouse. In this Znf173-Mog interval, three mouse class I genes, M6, M4, and M5, which are conserved among haplotypes, occupy the same map position as the human HLA-A class I cluster, which varies among haplotypes and is diverged in sequence from the mouse genes. These results further support the view that class I gene diverge and evolve independently between species.

    Notes: Abstract The morphology of undiffused and iodine-diffused CdTe slices and its effect on iodine concentration profiles is discussed. Such CdTe slices were analysed using defect etching, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results suggest that during diffusion a layer of an iodine compound forms in the surface region of the CdTe while, over a limited range further into the material, clusters of either this or a similar compound form at defect sites causing a high degree of crystal distortion.

    Notes: Abstract The crystal quality of CdTe, Cd0.96Zn0.04Te and Zn-diffused CdTe slices containing 1×1022 cm-3 atoms of zinc at the surface of the slice was investigated by the technique of defect etching. In this investigation, the chemical etch. Inoue EAg-1 reagent, gave satisfactory results, with useful comparative values of the etch pit density obtained in these materials. The main result that was obtained was that the etch pit density in Zn-diffused CdTe was more than 10 times greater than in undiffused CdTe and that after the diffused layer had been removed the value was virtually the same as in undiffused CdTe. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract A radiotracer sectioning technique that can be used successfully for measuring concentration profiles in diffused slices of single-crystal CdTe using anodic oxidation is described. The technique is useful when the penetration of diffusant is 〈5 μm which, if a good resolution is required, involves removing sections as thin as 0.1 μm. Investigations have shown that the best results are obtained using constant-current techniques, in which the voltage across the oxide layer is directly proportional to the thickness of the layer. This implies that the current passing through the layer is space-charge limited. In addition, mesa and non-mesa sectioning geometries are compared, and it is shown that the former sectioning geometry gives the more accurate profiles.
