Notes: Abstract Multiple introns were detected in the 16S rRNA gene of newly isolated Thermoproteus species strains IC-033 and IC-061 and Thermoproteus neutrophilus JCM 9278. In the 16S rRNA gene of strain IC-033, five introns of 627, 762, 636, 33, and 682 bp existed after positions 548, 781, 1092, 1205, and 1213 (according to the Escherichia coli numbering system), respectively. Likewise, strain IC-061 possessed 764-, 32-, and 688-bp introns after positions 781, 1205, and 1213, respectively; and T. neutrophilus JCM 9278 had 34- and 663-bp introns after positions 1205 and 1213, respectively. All the introns carried the putative intron core structures consisting of a bulge-helix-bulge motif and a long stable stem. The large introns carried open reading frames containing the LAGLI-DADG-like motifs in their terminal inserts; however, three out of four large introns of strain IC-033 seemed to incur frameshift mutations. Occurrence of introns at the same insertion sites in the three strains would allow tracing of the evolutionary movements of these introns.

Notes: Abstract The Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconducting ceramics containing Al2O3 have been prepared utilizing the reaction, Tl2O2+BaCuO2+Ca2CuO3+A12O3 or Tl2O3+BaCuO2 +Ca2CuO3+AlCuO2.5. It is shown that the resulting ceramics show the superconductivity at temperatures over 100 K when the Al/Cu molar ratio is kept below 0.5. EPMA analyses revealed that there is always an Al2BaO4 layer between the superconducting Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O and Al2O3 phases, leading to the separation between the superconducting and A12O3 phases.

Notes: Summary The disposition of aprindine following a single oral dose can best be described by a two-compartment open model. The mean plasma half-life (t1/2β) increased from 8.0±2.1 h (SD) after a 25 mg dose to 9.4±2.9 h after 50 mg and to 15.8±2.6 h after 100 mg, with a decrease in total plasma clearance (Cl/F) and volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss/F) and during β-phase (Vdβ/F). The area under plasma concentration-time curve (AUC), maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and the amount of unchanged aprindine excreted in the urine increased in a non-linear fashion with the increase in dose. The t1/2β after multiple oral doses showed a 3-fold increase over the single dose value. These results indicate that aprindine shows dose-dependent non-linear kinetics.

Notes: Summary The isoelectric focusing study of esterase D in Japanese revealed evidence of a new polymorphic allele (EsD 7) which is difficult to find by conventional starch gel electrophoresis only. A comparison with the occurrence of a subdivision of EsD 2 in Caucasians (EsD 5) suggests a remarkable difference in allele distribution of esterase D among races. Quantitative analysis showed a relatively low value of enzyme activity for this new allele. It is therefore emphasized that in addition to conventional electrophoresis, enzyme assay and further detection by isoelectric focusing are essential in analyzing the esterase D system.

Notes: Abstract  Global warming is increasingly recognized as a threat to the survival of human beings, because it could cause a serious increase in the occurrence of diseases due to environmental heat during intermittent hot weather. To assess the direct impact of extremely hot weather on human health, we investigated heat-related deaths in Japan from 1968 through 1994, analyzing the data to determine the distribution of the deaths by age and their correlation to the incidence of hot days in summer. Vital Statistics of Japan, published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan, was the source of the heat-related mortality data employed in this study. Meteorological data were obtained from the District Meteorological Observatories in Tokyo and Osaka, the two largest cities in Japan. Heat-related deaths were most prone to occur on days with a peak daily temperature above 38°C, and the incidence of these deaths showed an exponential dependence on the number of hot days. Thus, even a small rise in atmospheric temperature may lead to a considerable increase in heat-related mortality, indicating the importance of combating global warming. Furthermore, half (50.1%) of the above-noted deaths occurred in children (4 years and under) and the elderly (70 years and over) irrespective of gender, indicating the vulnerability of these specific age groups to heat. Since a warmer climate is predicted in the future, the incidence of heat waves will increase, and more comprehensive measures, both medical and social, should be adopted for children of 4 years and younger the elderly to prevent heat-related deaths in these age groups.

Notes: Summary In screening of the PGM system by isoelectric focusing a heterozygote with a rare allele of PGM 2was detected. Family studies and family register checkings for the propositus showed evidence of hereditary occurrence of this allele, and all the ancestors of the propositus were Japanese. Although there have been no reports among Mongoloids, the variant found in the present study is likely to be the first case of a rare phenotype of PGM 2among such populations. In addition, isoelectric focusing data on 411 Japanese samples are given.

Notes: Summary Six individuals with complete deficiency of erythrocyte AMP deaminase have been discovered. They are all healthy and have no hematological disorders. The deficiency is only in isozyme E, which is the erythrocyte type isozyme, and is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The frequency of the mutant gene is surprisingly high, one heterozygote in about 30 of the population in Japan, Seoul, and Taipei. The ATP level is approximately 50% higher in AMP-deficient erythrocytes compared to that of control cells. Degradation of adenine nucleotide is slower in the deficient erythrocytes than in the control erythrocytes.
